Chicago politics and events

Connor Bedard should probably have his own thread, but let's keep him here:

My son has been practicing bucket drumming and wants to go sit in front of the stadium for home games and drum and try to make his first million. Opinions on the advisability of that?
Do any other cities have bucket drummers like Chicago? I've never seen it anywhere else.

New Orleans is the mecca....

Near fatal shooting just off the Mag Mile yesterday afternoon. But never fear, ALL IS WELL according to Doc Hoops

Brandon Johnson when asked why CTU supports a hybrid school board structure where half the board seats are unelected.

Can't make this up. The Mayor of Chicago defending the Teacher's Union selecting their own board members, by saying "You have to be and educator to weigh in"

Chicago is everything wrong with our education system rolled into one city. Teachers Unions are evil.

I don't think poverty counts on an asylum application, and that appears to be what all those interviewed here are saying their reason is for being here.

Also, this is so stupid:

"But while some migrants are choosing to leave, many more still arrive every week. In what could be considered a revolving door for taxpayers, for example, Catholic Charities of Chicago is using Illinois taxpayer money to transport the migrants who want to return to Texas or to other states while simultaneously the Catholic Charities of San Antonio and the city of Denver are using federal taxpayer money to send new migrants to Chicago."

I understand the climate in Venezuela and Honduras is a lot warmer in winter?

Well that didn't take long:

Chicagoans are so f*cking stupid. Johnson being a disaster was the most predictable thing in the world. I still find it hard to believe that he won. CTU ****ery perhaps.

There's a 99% chance the guy is mentally ill. But no one can do anything about it, his family and community either can't or won't take care of him, and so he's shuffled around from place to place.

It's a huge problem, but in a nation that values freedom as much as we do, we put up with it. I don't know how to solve the issue without re-instituting forced institutionalization, which had its own evils and horror stories.

Maybe, but I believe that bad people exist & realize they’re doing bad things to other people. Is that mental illness, possibly, but almost certainly the world is a better place without him.

At the risk of sounding insensitive. Let them enjoy a Chicago winter on the street? I don't know why they came here with the expectation they'd be afforded free shelter.

Those far right extremists in MAGA hats are sure plentiful in Chicago

Mayor Johnson also blamed the 'far right' for Chicago's ills during Tuesday's press conference.

'What we've seen is a very raggedy form of right-wing extremism,' the woke Mayor said. 'Everyone knows that the right-wing extremism in this country has targeted democratically run cities and quite frankly and they have been quite intentional about going after democratically ran cities that are led by people of color.'

'There intention is to create division and chaos because that is what that particular political party has been about.
'It is the same party that wouldn't accept that President Obama was actually an American. It's the same Republican right-wing extremism that stormed the capital, its the same right wing extremism that refuses to accept the results of the civil war. Its raggedy its disrespectful, its mean spirited.'

'It is abysmal and it is an affront for everything that is good about this country for the extremism in this country to use people as political tools to settle political scores for something that happened over 400 years ago. They're still mad that a black man is free in this country.

So is Mayor Johnson engaging in "victimhood" here?

These blue cities continue to cut their noses off to spite their faces. Unconscionable
