I have become good friends with a German. Very smart guy. Very knowledgeable about German history leading up to WWII. He frequently brings up examples of similarities between current politics and Nazism. I think the problem we have is that we can only think of Nazism in terms of hating Jews. There is much more to Nazism than that. I asked him why he emigrated and he spoke in terms of Nazi influences in his profession. He wasn’t talking about hating Jews.

My best friend in high school's mom was born in 1935 in Berlin. Had 3 older brothers and an uncle who were in the German army. Came to the US after marrying his dad, who was part of the occupying force during The Marshall Plan years. Based on her experience, the typical working class German family liked Hitler and didn't believe the atrocities until they had to. Bread was more persuasive than doctrine. And until Barbarossa, it was easy to look the other way.
