While I'm somewhere between you and TMP on Phish....

Labeling it art and using that as your defense is weak. There is a lot of shifty art and just because someone's mom loves it doesn't count.

I like Phish to an extent, but don't give me the it's art line. Then anything no matter how shitty has to be accepted.
 
What people don't get and I suspect we're the same here ..

is I've tried, and tried hard, not to let that bother me and I know you have too. I absolutely love Trey's playing. He's one of my favorite and in my opinion one of the best living guitarist out there. He has a knack for tone that I just love. I want to listen to him. But four or five songs and it's just damn annoying.

And, I also know that our (everyones) ears love the familiar. So I always give groups tons of time to capture my ear. Most bands i listen to are acquired taste bands. It's been close to 25+ years and I just can't do it. It's that damn annoying and the dumb lyrics just don't help.

If starting a band I would probably pick Trey as my lead guitarist. Seriously, but he wouldn't go near arrangement. No freakin way. Just play your guitar and shut up.

all you have is your feelings. no knowledge, no experience, nothing else to go on. Basically you're no different than any Justin Bieber fan .. Zizkov, Hoops, Warison, Sope, and many others on this baord are just on a higher plane of musical existence and understanding than you are. So like what you want, but don't try to tell me about Phish or music in general, I know both far better than you ever will ..

I know that just from our conversations about them.

they are on my rotation, when I'm in the mood.
 
I rarely listen to them anymore.....

But I have quite a few songs on my rotation. It has been some time since I listened to them though.

They are at their best on the new years and Halloween shows when they cover an album.
 
It's great as back ground music when I don't want to pay .

attention. I listen to them like I do Miles Davis and Coltrane. I love the Halloween shows.. I have the Prince one on bootleg .. it makes me laugh. Of all the jam bands they're probably the most talented, (as far as technical ability and knowledge) and that includes the dead, but they're also a bunch of theory and tech heads who truly lack the inherent feel that the greats have. ... so tehy rely on that theory and technique a bit too much.

The Tom Crean comparison, though in jest, is probably correct. Probably too correct. Except for Phil, the Dead weren't theory heads, Jerry knew as much, but he didn't apply it just to apply it .. but he was born with a real musicians inherent ability and feel. Just as RMK was born with the same in basketball. Some things just can't be learned, you either have it or you don't.

Can you say "switch everything"..... it's fits for both. ha...

The first time my brother saw Phish.....

He was really impressed. He has played in many bands over the years as a hobby.

Over time he stopped listening to them. They are incredibly talented but lack feel as a band.

I agree completely about the Dead, although I think Micky and Bill K were quite well versed and technically sound.

Kerry's feel along with Phil and the percussion is what made them great and unique. Pigpen, Keith, Brent, Bruce and Vince just added to it.

Bobby was just doing what he was told.

You know Jerry kicked Bobby out of the band at least

100 times and he was not allowed to play rhythm on Jerry's songs, and especially the country ones because Bobby's timing was so bad that it screwed Jerry up.

Listen to them - Bobby basically does piano like chop fills on Jerry's songs, He even made him take lessons once.... and that was after cutting 5 or 6 recordings. As mellow as Jerry was, and seemed, he was meaner than crap to Bob... I think the nickname Ace wasn't from respect ..

Weir actually got far better as time went a long, he never quit studying.. I've heard him recently and he's better now than he was with them. Old dogs can learn new tricks..

I was at this show with Little O ..............

Up against the barrier. Stood in the same spot for 10 hours or so. Fast forward to roughly the 5:30 mark. Epic does not begin to describe what that venue was like with the rain falling literally in torrents. 70,000 humans singing "My Hero" - priceless.

There goes My Hero.
 
I hate to admit

but Phish lyrics are dumb as shit.

I love the extended jams. I love the live shows. I love the camping/show experience. But even I can't listen to them all of the time unless I'm doing "things" or at a live show.

Not a huge fan of the genre, but something about this guy makes Waylon Jennings proud. Really good song. Fantastic band. The lead guitarist is amazing. The tone he gets is perfect.
