I know that many of us do not have a subscription to The New York Times. In fact, many here would cut off an arm before reading NYTimes.com. But no matter what your opinion of that publication, I would urge everyone to take a look at the current series of opinion letters published around public education. I'm only part way through the collection, but it is a great example of how news media should contribute to our public good. It is also a refreshing example of how conflicting ideas around an important subject can be debated effectively. Even if you have to sign up for a one-time subscription (cancel immediately after reading the series if you need to), it's well worth your time.

Opinions letters in the NY Times is admittedly "some" discussion of issues, but that rubber really meets the road in classroom and business offices - where people really live day-to-day.

Very few of the BLM, Antifa, Proud Boys, January 6 violent trespassers read or write to The NY Times.

But it's a good thing that media is starting to recognize how little neutral and diverse discussion they have allowed or encouraged over the last several years. We need to talk our way out the mess we have created - not shout or fight or conceal or kill.

The point of my post was more about how a news publication can be a place for voicing different opinions about topics of concern to our society. I think this series of opinion pieces is a good example.

But I'll respond to your post too. Interestingly, most of these opinion pieces include shared beliefs even though the writers have very different ideas about education. Personally, school is where children discover who they are and gain essential skills to support life-long learning. I was fortunate to grow up in a small city with an excellent public school system that recognized all children learn in unique ways. The school system included a variety of alternatives that appealed to different children and families. My wife and I looked for that environment for our children as well.

Problem is that I don’t think people can really figure it out or agree on curriculum. Regular people can’t seem to agree on what’s best for kids. And too many take their cues from the politicians that are so disconnected from the real world and peoples problems.

If you died from a heart attack while testing positive for Covid, you were counted as “a Covid death.” Thus, neither our generation nor those after us will ever know the true numbers or truly understand Covid in the most beneficial way to other societies.
