86 Thousand New IRS Field Agents, Why?

and how do you know his facts are wrong and yours are right?

Sounds more likely than 86,000 IRS goons with guns going door to door stealing people's money.
I just listened to Biden explain long why we need these new agents. What a idiot. One item he was talking about was investments and we need to figure out the heck the income is from investments.

Security firms are doing unprecedented reporting of investment income. The 1099s generated by security firms have details of all interest, dividend and Secuity gains and losses. This reporting goes to the IRS to match with returns.

Hell the IRS matches this reporting with taxpayer returns electronically and generates notices electronically. They don’t need agents matching this income.

I will concede more audits are needed of businesses. BUT most of those audits will be businesses netting less than $400,000.

I'm going to have a hard time living that one down, aren't I?
Seriously whatever help your giving is great. Most small not-for-profits have terrible accounting records.

My firm gives thousands of free services to not-for-profits. Selfishly I discourage taking on any new ones.

I'm probably more anal about it than necessary, but I'm a beancounter at heart. Sadly, most of the people I provide the reports to don't really understand what they mean. They look at the bank balance and that's about it.

Too often Board members don’t pay attention. I think it was my second or third year in business. I had a client that worked at Crane Naval Center and was on a NFP board in Bloomington. One afternoon he came storming into my office. The IRS had taken several thousand out of his checking and savings account. Too many years gone by but I believe it was around $50,000. The NFP wasn’t paying their payroll taxes. There had been several notices but no one paid attention. The IRS took the money from his account because he was the board member with enough cash to pay it. I don’t know if he ever recovered the money equally from other board members or if the NFP paid him back.

We're you ever in a band named Kross?
I'm a big fan of Sesame Street. 😉

Are you originally from Bedford also?

I think we've talked about it before.

Now you know why I couldn't run for any political office even if I wanted to (I don't, but there's a lot of dumb shit on tape out there that automatically disqualifies me for anything especially the Kross stuff. I've always blamed Byers. Lol)

I'm a Chocola man, myself.

Yes, we know each other fairly well and you are FB friends with my wife as I don't do social media.

Our sisters were HS friends. You were a grade higher, but we were friends. Not super close, but more than knowing a name. We went to the same church and your parents were clients of mine until they moved. But if IIRC, your mother has passed.

If I knew how to send you a DM on this forum, I would, to let you know who I am.

Um? I'm against it.

I'm not saying all small businesses/self-employed are cheating. But I know for a FACT that the cash under the table economy is a big problem. You asked how I'd get to the people failing to report because how do you catch them if they're not reporting, and you do it by going to the source.
Government waste is a larger problem. This bill will add to that waste. The services need to paid for by the states. Not out of some federal fund. Yes…I realize what that means to “red” and “blue” states.

Its simply trying to find money.

The first move to simply raise taxes but that will never happen.

The second is to re-allocate funds but the Republicans say no.

The third response is to simply better enforce the tax laws that are already out there. This avoids raising any tax. They are trying to better collect the tax that is owed.

The ones who will be affected will be those that are currently cheating.

Even then the IRS is still woefully understaffed to go after every cheater, which is why they'll most likely go after big fish.

Still, it's hard to argue against enforcing current rules and regulations in general isn't it?

It's estimated that there is 380 billion in tax fraud each year. That's not jay walking fines.
I agree with most of that but everything I've read says the IRS is not capable of competing with the really rich who hire the best lawyers and CPAs to handle their affairs so they go after the less wealthy and middle class.

Small Business owners dont use GAAP..... that is for large public companies. Small business mostly use cash accounting.

I'd much rather move to a consumption based tax system.... taxing income is incredibly difficult. Paul Ryan attempted to push such a system forward but was thwarted by the Trump admin.....as Trump was too confused by it.
The consumption tax will eventually be law (JMO) because they can't let people with Roth's get away without taxing them and a consumption tax is an indirect way of taxing that money.

The whole problem with the idea it only affects those that are cheating is this.
That is true so don't cheat. I don't have a problem with them doing more audits. I don't cheat but I could make a mistake and not pay all my taxes. My biggest fear in filling out my taxes is that I'll forget something. I guess I need to consolidate my stuff but have never got around to it. But I don't think the IRS is out to get me like a lot of people do... they are just making sure that you pay what you owe.

Yes, I too would like a much more simplified tax system. In fact, I'd like to phase out income tax altogether and replace it with a VAT system. Then we all pay taxes - including all the illegals and tourists. That would be a great bonus. ;)
The VAT tax is a way to tax Roths in an indirect way so it will happen eventually. However a VAT tax hurts poor people more than rich people doesn't. I'm speaking from ignorance but a person making $30,000 now would pay very little tax but with a VAT tax wouldn't he pay all $30,000 (assuming that they spent it)?
Even with a flat tax I think you have to have a certain amount for a deduction so it doesn't hit poor people so hard. For example, tax everything over $30,000 at a certain rate.

Maybe I need to put the analogy in plainer terms. If everyone else thinks you're an incompetent jackass but you're convinced that it's actually everyone else that are the incompetent jackasses, it's more likely that everyone else is right and you are, in fact, an incompetent jackass.

And sticks & stones man. Please delete your account, adults are trying to have a conversation.

Sounds like your feelings are hurt. You're just another Amber in a sea of liberal snowflake Ambers. Your parents should have made it clear, you're not special. Participation trophies aren't worth a crap. You live in a real world and have to actually do more than whine and cry every day because you don't get your way. TMFT = Too Many F_____n Triggers.

Judas F*cking priest I could take you to court and win without a law degree. What is it about stupid lawyers that make them act like jackasses? My family has a friend who was a Federal court judge and we always had a big Christmas dinner cooked in our huge fireplace..............He looked over the papers for my house when I bought it like a wise old owl looking over his glasses. However he would have obliterated people with an attitude like yours. I would drive you in the ground like a fence post make no mistake

Sounds like a lot of people think you are an incompetent jackass to me. If this is the best you can do at arguing I'm guessing most of your cases involve the local dog catcher?

He sounds like a prosecutor to me🤣 If a lawyer can’t make it in the real world, they become Judges and Prosecutors.

Go through any thread you're involved in and create a ratio of how much you're contributing thoughts vs just talking shit. Same for @Eurocyldon.

I don't have any issue discussing issues with people that disagree with me. But you seem to be one of those people who get so easily triggered and default to anger & douchebaggery (to coin a term) when you've got nothing productive left to say.

I look forward to our court date when I get to test my mettle against your superior litigation skills.

You've talked more about your lawyering skills than I've ever talked about mine.

Take a breath. Maybe pop a Xanax. You're far too wound up for a Friday morning.

Depends on how it's done. It should be done with an annual rebate of some amount that ensures that low income people actually don't pay the VAT because they get the money back.

Are you trying to say something about the moderator uncle Mark and his neutered thread?

Pretty simple like they have the gestapo secret police going after Trump the IRS are here to come after ordinary citizens like you. We are very close to entering a full blown police state which libs will probably love cause they will not be the targets. They must be being scared of Trump normally you just beat your opponent at the the ballot box but not biden he needs to use third world tactics cause he must thing he cannot win. Sad.
Hey, wait a minute! That post isn't fair to the Capitol Police.

I thought the Jan. 6 deniers were claiming that the Capitol Police were polite and well-mannered and opened the Capitol doors for little old ladies (at least the ones wearing riot gear and motorcycle helmets and carrying bear spray, zip ties and sharpened flag poles).

So were the poor uneducated working slobs under reporting? Keeping bad books? Taking bad deductions? Were they unduly abused by the agents? Or were they just guilty of being lousy businessmen (as opposed to great roofers or mechanics or chefs) who didn't have the good sense to make sure they kept track of their income and expenses and reported them properly. If the latter is the case, then they had no business being in business for themselves to begin with.
I think a lot of the self-employed make innocent tax mistakes as well as occasionally take shortcuts (as by buying lunch with a cash payment from a customer).

Isn't part of the new bill supposed to make it easier to match up a customer's payment (when claimed as a business expense) with a recipient's/merchant's reported gross receipts?

How do you know it's a lie? 45 billion is earmarked for enforcement. The entire irs budget is only 13 billion.

Funds are approved. The thread title falsely indicates hiring (and arming!) of a massive force has already happened. It very clearly has not happened. You could argue a theoretical possibility, but not that it is reality.

Facts matter.

The self-employed are IRS targets. Obviously. And while disingenuously framing this as the Inflation Reduction Act that will be paid for by targeting those mean bad billionaires the reality is that self-employed people making less than $200k a year will be the primary target of our new IRS with six times the budget.
And, quite a few of today's self-employed became that way when they lost their real jobs during Covid. That group may not yet be fully knowledgable or experienced to handle the money aspects of their new self-business correctly.

Facts matter. Lol where in the title does it say arming. The title is fine and speaks for itself.
