86 Thousand New IRS Field Agents, Why?

That instant refund is a rip off for sure. It doesn't take long to get your refund if you file electronically.

Last year was the first year I ever filed electronically. (I'm just stodgy enough to not do much financial stuff of any kind online if I can help it. Silly I know.) I was shocked at how quickly I got my refund. I think it was less than two weeks. State refund was just as quick, too.

The reason I file electronically is that it gives me a lot more confidence that they get what I TYPED IN. I've had a couple times where they've typed in something wrong and send me a letter saying that I made a mistake when it was them that made the mistake. I normally get a refund but since I pay quarterly taxes I normally just apply it to next year's taxes. I trust sending a check via online banking more than writing one and putting it in the mailbox.

When I think about my taxes the IRS has 95% of the stuff to do them without my help and the things they don't know could be handled by requiring companies (Schwab, Fidelity, banks, etc) to do a little more. Or they could have aplace (make up a new word for Aloha :) ) to enter that information on your account at the IRS.

I’m begging to disagree with the “it doesn’t take long”. Lol. Our return from 2020 still hasn’t been processed and it caused an issue with r ability to get this years return filed. Last year we owed about $20k in fed and $7k in Indiana state tax. Even though they cashed r check the return is still not processed. But had to file and take directly to irs facility. Had to use an accountant in 2020 due to some special circumstances and multiple states of residence and I didn’t want to make a mistake. When I went to file this year online I couldn’t because they ask u for your previous years income to verify u. Since last year’s return was not processed it wouldn’t let me do it online. They owe us a bundle and r local irs office said they r still way behind.

My resistance to filing online has always been due to being stubborn and set in my ways. I fully acknowledge it being dumb. Hell, I resisted direct deposit until my employer forced it on me. I think there were only a half dozen of us getting a paper check when that happened, and two or three of those were unbanked.

Yep, we worry about Big Brother (government) knowing all about us. However by comparisonh private entities which track us on places such as the internet have way better technology than is available to the IRS. Thus this makes government appear to be wimpy by comparison.

Bottom line, paying income taxes to the Federal government is for the most part on the honor system.

Oh I am sure there are exceptions but for the most part people that file electronically and get a refund get it quickly. It doesn't sound like you have a simple return. Mine is not extremely simple either since I do QCD donations, do conversions plus take my RMD but when I file (and I just about always get a refund but apply it to taxes for the next year) it's not long until that money shows up in my IRS account.

🤣 There were a few holdouts when the company I worked for went to direct deposit and really some bitching when it was forced on employees. I thought it was great because I didn't have to go to the bank. Maybe you were like a few people I knew... they didn't tell their wife what they made so they kept a few dollars out of their check. :)

Naw, I just liked going to the bank on Saturday morning a flirting with the teller chicks. When I quit going in they called the hospital and the jail.

I was dragged kicking and screaming into the internet online bill paying and tax filing era by my wife. Always concerned about the security of doing financial stuff online. Now I wouldn’t have it any other way. I keep paper files for everything and it drives my wife crazy. Kind of a relief to not have to keep so many paper files. Before we moved from Indiana and built r new home here in Southwest Florida two years ago I burned 10 boxes of files I’d been hoarding since the early 90’s. Now I only have two file drawers.

Did you know?

With the combined salary of the 87,000 new IRS Agents ($81,456 average annual salary), you could put a police officer ($55,117 average salary) in every public school in the nation (97,568) and still have 31,007 police officers or $1,709,012,819 left over.

Now you know. They’re not interested in safety or security, they’re after you!

It’s “only” an additional 37k. 50k will be replacements for who is already there. Per the WSJ.

I’m aware, I just thought it was an interesting take that given the outrage over all of the mass shootings that the current administration would give something like the proliferation of the IRS priority over a potential solution protecting children in schools.

I assumed it was some Facebook bullshit. Embarrassing that a sheriff is involved in it in his official capacity.
His job is to protect, he is simply pointing out a failure in the fed gov’t to support his & other LEO efforts to keep people, particularly children, safe. What does the fact it was on FB have to do with anything?

Everyone that expressed outrage at the recent events should have some serious questions about why we are not taking immediate, interim actions to beef up school security but can get 10‘s of thousands of IRS agents into the field.

Why do we need replacements? Since the TCJA passed, the number of itemized returns has declined by about 25 million, from 45 million to about 20 million. Seems to me most of the audits would be about eligible otemized deductions. But maybe it's about income. I could be wrong.
