How embarrassing is this for Indiana? Although I bet Ma-asshat-a is pretty excited. I'm sure this will help Indiana's image and economy. It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.

It's already hurting the economy.

Say what you want about GenCon, but it pumps $50 million into the economy. That's good money. They've come out and said that if the bill is signed, they'll be moving it out of the state.

You also *just* got a statement from the NCAA saying that the bill is going to have them reconsidering where they do business. I absolutely see this costing Indy a Final Four at some point if the courts don't strike this crap down.

You're also telling some great workers with diverse backgrounds that Indianapolis is a place where they aren't welcome to ply their trade. I know this will upset exactly none of you, but it's made me cross off Indianapolis entirely as a place for my next move. Even if, as a young, straight, white, lower middle-class and college-educated male, it really doesn't affect me, specifically.

That's tax dollars off the table, and will cause companies to up and leave.

Who the hell thought this was a good idea? And what moron doesn't veto this before it hits his desk?

The NCAA released a statement confirming it opposes religion and/or freedom

Actually I think this is just their token non-committal statement. Like I said when this came up a few days ago, I really don't see them doing anything major unless and until they get backed into a corner by public outcry. There may be a modest kerfuffle during the final four but then our national gnat-like attention span will save them from actually having to do anything.

Star article on NCAA statement

It's hard to believe this level of stupidity still exists....

and Indiana is leading the way.

It's really embarrassing.

Anyone that voted for Pence = dumbass.

Mike Pence has made a career out of being a buffoon that panders to the low information voter. His record as a politician speaks for itself.

If you are reading this and you voted for Pence, you are an idiot, and you are getting what you deserve in a "public servant."

Also, step in front of a bus before the next election.

Thanks.

Point of Order: I do believe Alabama is actually leading the way...

I think Alabama already passed their version of this bill months ago AND are doing away with traditional marriage licenses AND have a state Supreme Court judge ordering lower state courts not to follow federal court rulings. So Indiana appears to be more following the Tide's roll.

I tend to be skeptical when the media makes all out blitz on something

as they have done here. Half the states (including many liberal ones such as Illinois) have this legislature as does the federal government (signed by Clinton).

So what makes Indiana's different than all those other pieces of legislation that have been enacted all over the place? Are we seeing major discrimination in all of those states?? I really doubt it, but have no idea.

I just think it's sad when everyone grabs on to the media narrative without thinking for themselves first.

My repub "friends" tell me that this is nothing but....

liberal hate spin, that this is something that 30 other states have, is already a federal law, and won't be a big deal. It's not to spread hate, but to protect business from getting sued.

So, move along. Nothing to see here.

Does the NCAA do business in the other 19 states

that have the same exact bill?

I find it interesting that this bill is a completely invisible bill in the states that it currently exists in. My fear is that people are running amok with what "COULD" happen as opposed to considering the existing examples and what actually "DOES" happen.

I'm not into it either way...I haven't read the bill and I don't plan on reading the bill. It just seems like a talking point that has been used and abused for political reasons.

If I'm an atheist business owner can I refuse to serve Christians?

Because I don't believe in their beliefs?

Can't wait to see the if this ever comes up and backfires on Pence and his followers.

I don't see why not, but you can bet the same backwardsass....

people that support this bill will be outraged.

Indiana's seems to go a bit further than others

it goes beyond the federal legislation to apply "regardless of whether the state or any other governmental entity or official is a party to a proceeding implementing or applying the law."

So, obviously I'm not a lawyer, but it seems like people can choose to ignore certain non-discrimination rules/regulations/etc. in the name of religious freedom.

You get a Banner!

And so will Bama, but their's will probably only be for making consecutive tournament appearances.

pretty much. Saw several family run businesses already making changes

Based on their beliefs already. A family ran drug store will no longer sell birth control. Anothe place won't be selling liquor. It's crazy.

Blame Bill Clinton

For the religious freedom reformation act he signed in 1993.

Is Bill Hudnutt still alive?

I am sure he loves to see his (and multiple other politicians over the years) have a lot of hard work undone by an elected official with sub-Sarah Palin intellect.

From unigov on down, Indy's goal was to make itself the convention capital of the Midwest. I doubt many here remember the Indy downtown of the 1970s, but a lot of work went into making Indianapolis what it is today.

The Governor of Indiana just undid 4 decades of work.

Actually it's more then half, but most were passed for reasons....

listed in this article. None of which were championed by the basckwardsass Indiana people that voted for it.

It's embarrassing and will hurt Indiana, but that's what you get when you vote for republicans.

Democrats suck balls, but at least they aren't republicans. It's the sad state of the US today.

Dear lord is that stupid.

The Religious Freedom RESTORATION Act signed by Clinton is markedly different than the one signed by Pence.

Plus, laws on a federal level often act very differently than laws on a state level, even with similar wording.

OK he sucks! That's not really a defense, it's a cop out....

and shows a general misunderstanding of the 1993 bill and the one sign today.

Here's the thing for me I'm both for and against it

Telling someone/business you have to accept me but I don't have to accept you is wrong. At the same time if I was a business owner I'd serve everyone that could pay since I'm in it for the money.

Re: Actually it's more then half, but most were passed for reasons....

Democrats will spend the country into bankruptcy and Republicans will reverse time. Can't win.

Agreed

For some reason this is only a tragedy in Indiana. I don't see a need for the bill, but I don't see massive discrimination happening all over the country either.

anyone that votes period and thinks you make a difference by doing so =

A dumbass. You could make an argument still that something on a very local level such as a school board or town council or neighborhood board still can make a difference, but that's just about it in my opinion.

You seem to be missing the point twice.....

for one, this bill is not the same as the bill that people keep using for defense from 1993. If you don't believe me then go read them.

And secondly, it doesn't matter how many people this is used against. It's BS and shows how backwardsass Indiana still is.

It's embarrassing.

apparently they thought so, but ya I would think if u don't want to sell

Something then don't.

I Officially Refuse To Sell Any Of You Heathen Bastages ANYTHING

Ok. I'll sell some stuff to y'all, but not the Irish.

Aww, prairie siht, everybody

Yes......

if we took the top 100,000 leaders from each party and sent them on the Mars mission, then the US immediately becomes a better place.

The problem is that most Americans think that one party has it right and the other is wrong.

It's as stupid as this bill and almost as embarrassing.

Read it. Discussed it with two attorneys and...

...a federal investigator in the field of EOE who isn't from Indiana or necessarily plans to stay in Indiana. It's state sanctioned bigotry. If it was just about a mom and pop store deciding not to sell birth control or booze, that would be one thing--not even sure why they would have to anyway, but it could embolden businesses AND people from denying services to people in real time.

Any scenario is possible, and if a person acts on their own, they're protected as well from being fired.

A self-righteous moron whose friends have God complexes...

Some of the guys pushing this bill, amazingly enough, own their own businesses.

So now all stores aren't required to sell guns, porn, and cigs?

Well what the hell is the point of stopping at any store in Indiana if they no longer mandated to cater to all your vices with one-stop shopping?!?!
