IU and MI

Sure. Just like Yasir is leaving. Just like TJD isn't coming back to IU after his sophomore year. Yeah we get it.

The best defenders are going to play. Period. JG is at a huge disadvantage transitioning out to the perimeter and Bates is way behind other guards like Galloway and Kopp defensively. Woodson has a preference towards defense and it's been that way since day 1.
IU stepped up and paid Ya. TJD was 100% gone until Woodson got hired.

You will be wrong. Bates will start and JHS will get a lot of minutes even though Galloway is a better defender. You can’t just play your best defensive guys no matter what. Woodson knows it would send a very poor message if he sits JHS and Bates in favor of Galloway next year. Again, we won’t be elite next year, but we could be the following years. Next year should be about developing our talented players.

Bates didn’t play because he wasn’t really an upgrade offensively. He will never be as good as Galloway defensively. He will still play over him.

Geronimo didn’t play because he had TJD and Race in front of him. Woodson can’t sit JHS, Bates, and Reneau this year. That would be catastrophic. He has to let guys develop. It’s not about next year. It’s about the following years when we have a chance to be truly elite.
You overestimate the impact of playing time in games on player development. Guys are mostly ready or not going into the season and undergo the most actual development in the offseason.

guys like Davis/Murray this year, and Liddell last year were minor role players their freshman year, developed in the offseason, then exploded the next season.

We already saw how Woody uses his playing time. You have to be largely "solid" defensively to play for Woody.

Tamar and Jordan showed flashes of brilliance, on both ends. But neither were consistently "solid" defensively.

Stewart and Kopp never showed any flashes of much of anything, and they caught a lot of flack for it. Myself included at times. But both were actually pretty "solid" defensively. As was Trey, as was Rob. Which is why they got most of the minutes. It was obvious that Tamar and Jordan were better offensively than those guys, more explosive anyways. But they played very little.

Despite his early season rant on turnovers, Woody rarely, if ever pulled guys throughout the year for making poor plays offensively. But it was very common for them to get yanked if they had lapses defensively.

Xavier, TJD, and Race are probably the only guys Woody has penciled into the main rotation at this point, assuming X and TJD are coming back. The other 4-6 or 7 slots will be earned. And if last year is any indicator to what will earn those minutes, it'll be defense.

And I completely disagree. Look at guys like Branham and Ivey as freshmen. Started slow, but their coaches stuck with them.

Davis played 24 mpg and Murray played 18.

Possessions*

Yes, 24th in defensive efficiency is borderline elite. The point is the offense is what is currently holding us back. 96th is really bad. Bates will help with that and Reneau should be a huge improvement at the backup 5 over Durr, so I would expect that number to go up.
I have very bad memories of wings lighting us up most games. We need to improve big time in defending the perimeter to really be an elite defensive team. Just look at teams like UNC and Houston as examples of where we can eventually go defensively.

Branham started all but one game this year, and was contributing substantially from game one. He didn’t improve much, just started taking more shots.

you might have a case with Ivey, but that was also a weird shortened/limited COVID preseason practice year.

Murray/Davis got solid minutes, but didn’t exactly improve a ton throughout the year just because of those minutes. Also, no one is saying that Bates/JHS/Reneau are going to wear out the bench. Most everyone is pencilling them in for 15-20 min at least.

I think we got lit up more by stretch 4s.

Houston was an elite defensive team, but UNC wasn’t. We are already better than UNC defensively.

Go look at Branham’s stats compared to Bates through their first 10 games. Bates was better.

Murray was 2 points better and 2 rebounds better the last 16 games of his freshman year than he was the first 15. He got better even as the competition increased. Same for Branham and Ivey.

Johnny Davis was 1 point better in his last 16 games than he was in his first 15. They all got better as the year went on. Then they were the focal point of their offenses the following year to build on the confidence they had gained the year before. Branham won’t have that option as he improved so much during the year that he’s now going pro.

We would be full, however they are still recruiting wings and know there is a chance TJD still comes back. If it were to happen, Duncomb seems the likely candidate to hit the portal although I could see Galloway as well.
Galloway is going nowhere. Why would you even say that?

Because someone has to leave if TJD comes back and we get a wing commit.
It won't be Galloway. He is a major contributor whether he comes off bench or starts. I believe Bates & Galloway will both be studs next year.

Kopp & Leal can get academic scholarships if needed.

Galloway will never be a “stud”. You can’t go from an athletic scholarship to an academic scholarship and stay on the team.

The likely scenario is that Duncomb will transfer.

I really don’t want to lose Galloway. Indiana kid, dad is a coach, and he really loves IU. He’s not leaving unless he’s pushed, IMO.

Why not? That's absurd, do you think anybody is going to kick them off the team if they qualified for an academic scholarship and weren't taking up an athletic one? I think not, that's a huge benefit for the team and would be rewarded, not punished if they did that

Because it’s against NCAA rules to go from a scholarship player to an academic scholarship for this very reason?

"You can’t go from an athletic scholarship to an academic scholarship and stay on the team. " Not true !

If your athletic scholarship is taken away, you most assuredly can get an academic scholarship if you qualify.

You can, but you aren’t allowed to stay on the team.

That doesn't make any sense as they are guaranteed their scholarship even if they are no longer on the team due to being out recruited etc, players bill of rights. It might be against the rules to split scholarship between both, but 99.999% sure that Woody could say we just don't want or need you and his scholarship would be guaranteed by the university if he's in good standing ... that's what the whole thing was about, to limit the impact of "Creaning" on athletes

If they get minutes, who doesn’t get minutes? You can only play 9 guys consistently.
I expect we will have our usual rash of injuries next year, like always, which leads to redistribution of minutes.

The players bill of rights guarantees them a scholarship. It does not guarantee them a spot on the team. A player can’t go from athletic scholarship to academic scholarship and stay on the team.

That's ridiculous, so if you have an academic scholarship, who the F says you can't then just be a walk on ... same difference. There's no way you couldn't do that. Hell, if I got interested in studying again and lost 30 years, I could probably do that as a grad student if I could make the team as a walk on. There's no way they'd deny a walk-on the ability to play if they wanted them to play and they're eligible

Read the damn rules. I didn’t make them up.

An academic scholarship player can walk on as long as they were never recruited (not even a recruiting letter).

I don’t know or care and don’t want to go down a myriad of hypotheticals with you in the event A, B, C, and D happen. Galloway will be a Hoosier next year and will play a significant role.
He may be a Hoosier, but his role is TBD.

It’s not the same difference.

Not saying they would. They could. I was reading about teams doing this. It’s already happening.
They can’t get academic scholarships. They can get a NIL deal to pay their way, but they can’t get academic scholarships.
