IU and MI

I wouldn’t call that a big part of the rotation
14 minutes a game is probably a little light for what he'll get, depending on how much we end up getting from Bates, JHS, Gunn, Banks...and how Jordan is used if he comes back. But even if it is 10-12 minutes, he'll be a big part of our success. We'll need his spark and energy, I'm sure, at times.

If McNeil or Dennis commit, there really isn’t a path to PT for Galloway. Bates will jump him in minutes and Geronimo will take minutes away at the 3.
Geronimo and Bates both will need to learn how to defend at a high level out on the perimeter before even thinking about eating in to anyone's minutes. Galloway will play 20+ minutes next year regardless if he starts or not until one of the other guards can defend at his level.

I don’t expect any minutes for Gunn or Banks. Around 10ish for Galloway.

I don’t believe you will be proven correct in this thinking. I do believe Bates and Geronimo will be improved defensively.

Let’s say we hold St Mary’s to 70 instead of 82…. We still lose by 17. Offense was a bigger issue than defense in that game.
If we get more stops, we score more than we did. Its not a simple math equation like that. Offense is a bigger issue, no doubt. But one of the ways to get better offensively, is to get better defensively. There aren't a lot of guys available that immediately answer the offensive question marks, without giving up defense.

We have a long way to go to be a final four level team. Its pretty widely expected now that Final Four/Natty contenders are top 20-30 in both efficiency ratings. If we have a path, via Dexter Dennis and the rest of our current returning guys, to be a top 10 defensive team. I like that path better than sacrificing any sort of defense, to get a McNeil or whatever other "shooter" like Kopp or Stewart might be available. Yes, I'd rather be ranked 10th on defense and 90th on offense. Than 40/50... as an example. 40/50 means you aren't capable of "winning" against top 10-15 level teams on either side of the ball.

I don't think any of the guys we've lost thus far, will hurt us a ton offensively not having them. So if we're going to be similar offensively, might as well become actually dominant defensively.

Use your words.

XJ/JHS
Bates/McNeil or Dennis
Geronimo/Kopp
Race/Reneau
TJD/Reneau
Geronimo isn't starting at the 3 and bet he plays very little on the perimeter next year, he's just not there. XJ, Race and TJD assuming he's back are the only sure fire starters. Bates will have to improve drastically to beat out Galloway in the starting lineup. Disagree with it all you want, if you've listened to anything Woodson and staff have said the last year, everything starts and stops on the defensive end. Galloway is light years ahead of Bates right now in that area of the game.

Or we just add guys that make us better offensively. Dennis is a good defender, but won’t be an all defensive type player. He’s an upgrade to Stewart and Kopp defensively though.

Possessions*

Yes, 24th in defensive efficiency is borderline elite. The point is the offense is what is currently holding us back. 96th is really bad. Bates will help with that and Reneau should be a huge improvement at the backup 5 over Durr, so I would expect that number to go up.
Being 84th in points allowed and 157th in 3% is really bad. By getting more possessions the offense will naturally move up in efficiency. Last years defense was not elite but it certainly could get their with some improvement. So that points back to my original statement.

You should pay more attention to IU news. Geronimo is only still at IU because he was told he could work towards being a 3. In all of the workouts since the season ended he’s worked out exclusively at the 3 and with the wings.

Woodson will play those that give the best chance to win. Bates will be light years ahead of Galloway offensively this year.

ha But an upgrade at defense provides more possessions which then makes for more offensive opportunities. Thereby, improving the offense. We have focused on offense and we saw what that got Tom Crean.

Lol you apparently don’t understand how offensive and defensive efficiencies are calculated.

It’s a moot point, because the roster is essentially set. All we have left to find out is if it will be McNeil or Dennis coming to the roster and which player is Creaned for them.

He will be an all defensive type player. He was the defensive player of the year in the same conference as Houston, Memphis, and Cincinnati. Your competition argument is absurd.

Stewart and Kopp were both solid defensively, both more so than they got credit for from many on this board. The problem was neither were capable of stopping many of our opponents "studs" down the stretch. Buddy Boeheim, Champagne, Johnny Davis, Ivey, Murrays, they all went off on us, especially in the 2nd halves.

Its difficult to put a number on how important a stud wing defender, in Dennis, would be.

Tom Crean had elite teams at IU. Archie and Woodson (so far) have not. I would take offense over defense every day of the week.

That was at a mid major level. Huge difference in competition.

Bates is really close on D he actually had multiple big stops late in the year. Very confident he is starting next year. You might even say, I’d bet on it.

Bates has the most potential of any guard on the team. Another year in the weight room should help him defensively a ton. Still not convinced he's ready for 30+ mpg and relegating Galloway completely to the bench. Galloway will play a lot next year.

We understand your preference.

Woodson is going to field the best possible defensive lineups and rotations any time he can. It's why Bates and Geronimo didn't play a ton last year despite being huge potential guys.

Because you can’t explain how all of those players fit into a rotation. You can’t play more than 9 guys consistently.
Xavier 30
TJD 30
Race 25
JHS 20
Jordan 20
Tamar 17
Malik 17
Dennis or McNeil 17
Trey 12
10th man 12

That's 200 minutes. There, that wasn't all that hard.

Geronimo would need a miracle summer to play the 3, and Bates was riding pine behind a healthy Galloway for many reasons.

Trey is light years ahead of Bates on D and he’s a better ball handler. Bates has shown the possibility of being a better shooter but it’s close.

Geronimo is a nice player with a ton of potential, but he’s a tweener until he proves otherwise. Dude cannot move laterally for some strange reason, so he fouls constantly. Also, have you seen him dribble?

You realize Galloway played point guard at Northwestern and was serviceable. You know how hard that would be for Geronimo or Bates?

Tom Crean only had one elite team and that one elite team had a great defense. Tom Crean had many "elite" offenses though and that resulted in him getting canned. Defenses are what make elite teams.

He needs to. Could get there. he was awful guarding it. Only thing that saves him is he’s quick/athletic enough to recover on lesser players. He’s got a long way to go.

Bates didn’t play because he wasn’t really an upgrade offensively. He will never be as good as Galloway defensively. He will still play over him.

Geronimo didn’t play because he had TJD and Race in front of him. Woodson can’t sit JHS, Bates, and Reneau this year. That would be catastrophic. He has to let guys develop. It’s not about next year. It’s about the following years when we have a chance to be truly elite.

Geronimo and Bates will never have to play PG. Galloway will never have to play PG again (at IU).

Bates will play over Galloway.

The defense on that team was ranked 5 spots ahead of last year’s team. The offense was ranked 94 spots higher than last year’s team. Which needs to improve more to have a team like the 2013 team?

Just telling you what’s going to happen and what the staff is currently working JG towards.

Just telling you what’s going to happen and what the staff is currently working JG towards.
Sure. Just like Yasir is leaving. Just like TJD isn't coming back to IU after his sophomore year. Yeah we get it.

The best defenders are going to play. Period. JG is at a huge disadvantage transitioning out to the perimeter and Bates is way behind other guards like Galloway and Kopp defensively. Woodson has a preference towards defense and it's been that way since day 1.

Is Kopp the 10th man?
I'd prefer Banks and/or Gunn to get some minutes. But yeah, those 12 could largely be Miller's.

I'm not a very big Miller Kopp fan, when it comes to his on the court production. We've seen what he provides, and I'd rather cultivate future contributors, than see him shoot 35% on 4 shot attempts, and struggle to guard B10 level wings during crunch time.

Jordan might not even be coming back though. And we haven't signed anyone via the portal. There's a lot of potential for time, even for Miller, if any of those things happen.

I just hope the frosh come in and take those minutes.
