Do you think this guy is correct about the election?

I didn't watch this guy's analysis (I hate video stories) but I'd suggest that what lost the election was selecting a progressive California liberal in an election where the key States were rust belt or Southern. Had Biden opted out from the beginning and they'd conducted a full primary I have no idea who may have prevailed. It might well have been Harris anyway, as she'd have the incumbent role. But at least then it would have been the voters' selection. Having her anointed without a vote didn't help her.

In the end it was the two least desirable candidate that we could imagine. Someone had to lose.

I think there is some truth there but overall I think it boiled down to the candidate they put forward and the timing of everything. In my opinion if Biden would have had sense enough not to run again I think they would have selected a candidate that would have beat Trump. In other words, the Democrats were their own worst enemy.

There were a few people who publicly suggested Biden step aside long ago.

The ‘22 midterm result complicated that. And people like Ezra Klein and David Axelrod who said this publicly were roundly shouted down…until the debate from hell.

I think Jones has a point about tactics. I'm not sure tactics were the driving force of this election, though. Never understood that. How many people's opinions change based on people knocking on their door and wanting to talk to them? I'd guess the juice has never been worth the squeeze.

I think you hit upon this yesterday, but I wonder if inflation was just too much for the incumbent party to overcome. The middle class folks, including Hispanics and blacks, felt inflation very directly.

Now, I think there are many other issues at play here and we will dissect them for months. I just wonder if it’s the economy stupid might be a large part here.

I agree with Van and said numerous times on here how important Musk buying X was for the GOP. I think it shows up best in the numbers for younger voters who are more likely to be on social media platforms. Trump won the young male vote and improved with young women as well.

People vote on the micro side of economics, not the macro.

Like I said, he absolutely bombed my feed with pro GOP and Trump stuff. He clearly weaponized Twitter for the GOP. Not sure how the Ds counter that.

He HATES woke shit. Dems move to the middle and one fight with trump and he could be doing the same for Dems next election
Twitter was used against Trump in 2020. Heck the FBI was even helping Twitter in 2020. I think I remember Democrats saying to Republicans “start your own Twitter”. I guess they followed that advice although Musk didn’t start out as a Republican.

Dems were likely going down regardless. People have had enough of the BS. Also, people like food and shelter. And like to feel safe. It’s time for some law and order. Trump would have likely won regardless. But it would have been closer if they hadn’t run the dunce and jazz hands out there as the dem ticket.

Musks purchase of twitter was absolutely a key factor. Thanks Elon!

It was clearly a huge drag on Biden and Harris both. Some other candidate might have had less vulnerability to it -- since they were incumbents. Inflation has wrecked a number of presidencies -- Nixon, Ford, Carter...even Bush 41.

Biden/Harris were caught in a classic political paradox: the inflation rate has come down, employment is strong, real wages are up, capital markets are soaring....but people didn't feel it. So, on one hand they wanted to brag about how much better the economy is today than it was when they took office. On the other hand, voters were naturally put off by the insistence that, whatever they might think, times are good.

True. I don't think Musk is a terribly loyal Republican. He says he's mostly voted Dem since he's been able to.

Personally, my X feed had a lot of noise from both sides. There was a lot of pro-Trump stuff. But there was also a lot of anti-Trump stuff. Also, I think Community Notes is a terrific way to deal with misinformation on social media. It keeps the censors out of it -- rather than removing false statements, the statements are countered.

That's the way to do it.

All election shit aside, and understanding that traditionally the social media platforms lean left, how do we feel about this? Elon's purchase of Twitter and his heavy handed use of same to push Trump's agenda and troll Dems clearly shifted the balance.

Do we like billiionaires having this kind of power? Yeah, money matters but Musk figured out a way to provide what was essentially free advertising for Trump all day every day. I don't like it when Dems do it and I don't like it when Musk does it. It just sits wrong with me.

Agreed. And I feel the same about SOROS influencing local elections here. In some ways it’s even scarier bc it takes so little for a guy like soros to pick a DA. As little as a couple hundred grand. Do that in 100 cities and you’ve fckd the entire crim justice system.

Billionaires are a problem in politics

When 70+ % of voters have the economy as #1 or #2 and it is reinforced every time they look at $11 bacon and you smugly tell tem they are wrong and should get pronouns right...you are screwed.

Too wordy.

Trump rolled, and the explanation is simple.

I agree with your take on it. At the tactical level he’s correct. At the strategic level, the Dem messaging has moved way too far Left for this country and their candidate was the only one worse than Trump.

Musk’s version of X is much much better than Jack’s. He should buy Reddit next to fix that. There is more misinformation and echo chambering on that site more than any other.

Are you sure that the algorithms don't just feed stuff they want/like? Aren't dems getting the same treatment on Twitter?

I don’t know that Musk was pushing Trump propaganda on X. I’m sure the liberals were getting just as much Krassenstein and Meidas Touch propaganda as conservatives were getting Kirk and Shapiro.

I think your perception is that the rest of media is so overly slanted towards liberal propaganda that legacy media did their best to paint X as some right wing bastion.

My feed was pretty equal and mostly sports memes!

Perhaps it's just that a singular person (musk) can buy a megaphone as big as Twitter and turn it into a Trump mouthpiece (everything he pushed was TRump forward and Dem trolling and he has gamillions of followers). I agree the Dems, through various celebs and BROOKLYNDADDEFIANT!!!! or whatever that assclowns handle is, try to achieve the same results. But, again, Musk is a billionaire and clearly used his money and influence to sway younger male voters.

AGain, all perfectly legal under our system of free speech ($$$$$$$) but I think we need to reconsider how we view social media platforms. It's messy and difficult but we should talk about it.

I mean, what's going to stop Oprah from buying (fill in the blank) and just start pushing leftist shit 24/7. I mean it when I say that billionaires run this county from both sides.

Of course we keep voting for ****ers that let it keep happening. As always, nothing will change until the electorate makes it change. But now we're all in our echo chambers supremely confident that we're right.

It’s not complicated. Harris simply doesn’t have the chops to be president. People knew that before she was nominated and the design of her campaign put an exclamation point in her ineptness.

This election should habeen an absolute run-away and had the GOP nominated Haley it would have been.

Her campaign was mainly that she wasn't Trump.

and she would change what she'd been a part of the previous 3.5 years.

I was always puzzled why her campaign positioned her as the change candidate, when she had been running on the incumbent ticket just weeks before.
