2022 IU Football Recruiting Thread

Time to make a first stab at 2022 IU football recruiting. Rivals & Peegs both have offer lists. This list is intended to be a condensed version of guys I feel IU has a legit shot at.

Again, I know only what I've read on-line---no personal knowledge. The comments about who 'leads', initially, are all from the 247 site. IU offers of Indiana players ranked by 247 & Rivals are noted as such.

Unfortunately, we've already lost out on some top Indiana prospects. #3 247 & Rivals OT Joey Tanona is a ND commit; #5/2 QB Brady Allen is a Purdue commit; Also, #1/1 DT Caden Curry & #2/6 OT Kiyaunta Goodwin are OSU leans.

I'd welcome comments about additions and deletions. Also, errors.

IU DB target and scheduled visitor Kyron Chambers committed to Auburn.

Judging current list of recruits in June to the actual on signing day #1 in Dec or final #2 early Feb...way too early to be worried. Ask this question: If IU were running the table going into OSU game and win at home...you don't think top recruits would be wanting to come to IU? I know we aren't there yet, but there's another huge group coming in the next few weekends. Patience and in Tom A we trust!

We've got a HUGE group of talented kids coming this weekend.

Mullen and Cooper are both coming this weekend, who many think we lead for. We're on a really good spot for Jalen Marshall, the DT from Kansas. Jacolby Spells and Demon Moore are both four stars that we're in the top groups for that we can really show off for.

We've got several other kids as well coming in like Richard Thomas, who is already committed and can recruit for us and spread LEO for us. I would also bet Dasan will be on campus.

It's a big weekend.

When you recruit higher level players they don’t usually commit as early because they have a lot of options to consider. Welcome to Big Boy football.

Although it seems like the big boys fill up their classes faster than we do.

Definitely like that we are swinging for the fences. Hopefully we have plan b if we get a lot misses.

I read on another site that so far this June 2021 there has been roughly 90 commitments. The article states that at the same time last year and the previous year there were 500+ For each respective year. Interesting

I read on another site that so far this June 2021 there has been roughly 90 commitments. The article states that at the same time last year and the previous year there were 500+ For each respective year. Interesting

Is the "90" figure for the BT only? Or for June only? I ask because IU is pretty average or slightly below on #s relative to other p5 programs. I think P5 + ND only are 65 teams.....so I'd expect total YTD commitments to be more like 750.

Not denying that things are slower generally, but not sure what the 90 # represents.

So here goes: (125 as of 6/28/21)

I've updated the list with lots of commitments.

It's been a tough last 7 days for us, I think. Hoping that something will drop in our favor soon.

Anyway, I've added Mullen, Jones, Carter & Hoover as IU commits. And OL Trent Ramsey & Bray Lynch as IU prospects.

Other commits:

M. Golden to TCU; C. Brown to Pitt; E. Pugh to Illinois (from Cincy); T. McIntosh to Wisconsin; J. Glover to MSU; G. Burkle to Iowa St.; T. Gibson to GT; A. Craig to ND; J. Peoples to Kansas; A. Niblack to Bama; E. Kolenge to BC; T. Brown to C.C.; A. Barham to Memphis; T. McAlpine to TCU; E. Sludge to Baylor

The only players in that group that were takes were Sludge and Burkle.

Everyone else weren't serious targets or we backed off in the case of McIntosh.

So here goes: (125 as of 6/28/21)

Fwiw, asst coach Kevin Wright, who's been an active tweeter in June, tweeted that "I got a good feeling about the next few days". Have no idea who he's talking about, but he's been active just before other commitments.

I saw that Alfonzo Allen Jr., a very highly regarded safety from Florida, recently visited. He's verbally committed to ASU. Looks like he knows Mullen, Gaines & Anthony Brown Jr..

Matt Weaver put in a crystal ball for tight end, Ryan Miller.

I was wondering about his situation.....hadn't heard much about him & IU before or after his visit, but I noticed he hadn't visited anywhere else other than WVU in June. Has offers from Cincy, Auburn, BC, GT, Iowa St, Kansas, UK, UL, Tennessee & W. Virginia. Would be a great get. Looks like a receiving TE that has a frame to end up 6'6" 250 lbs.

Just a guess on my part, but there are some guys announcing in the next week that we're after.

Spells, Durant and Monds are announcing on the 4th and Gaines is announcing on the 17th I believe.

Also, Joe Strickland was on Instagram yesterday telling James Jointer, who is committed to Arkansas but took a official to us over the weekend, to flip to us. That's gotta be somewhat encouraging.

Turner is also trying to flip Jointer.

Spells looks very even between WV, us, and Miami. I thought it was likely us or Miami, then I saw he has also has friends going to WV.

Monds was supposed to be a 'lock' for Nebraska, but they are really struggling right now. Crappy class to this point and the AD just resigned.

Question for you about the calendar.....tried to google it but the info was confusing. As I understand matters, it's "dead time" for recruiting through 7/24. What then? And is it correct that the early signing date is in December?

Just a guess on my part, but there are some guys announcing in the next week that we're after.

Spells, Durant and Monds are announcing on the 4th and Gaines is announcing on the 17th I believe.

Also, Joe Strickland was on Instagram yesterday telling James Jointer, who is committed to Arkansas but took a official to us over the weekend, to flip to us. That's gotta be somewhat encouraging.
I was going to ask if you had heard anything on him. I think Purdue will be a tough out given all the pull there. He really likes Hagen. He will be interesting to watch for sure. He just had a really good visit to Purdue I think.

I have zero inside information on Strickland. Most media reports have it a battle between IU and PSU, but PU is definitely not out of the picture.

What are the rules about the national letter of intent now that everyone can transfer? Will the recruiting not end until their freshman season starts?

Yea, it's basically down to Miami and us for him.

Long way to go here but playing for the home town team will be hard to overcome. His family really liked IU though, especially his mom. The staff has done a good job recruiting him.

We'll see what happens.
I feel because of the transfer portal that if you come in 2nd place now there is a chance you will have another shot at them in a few years.

Ya. It's hard to say with Purdue on anyone because they seem to be playing a lot of catchup after turning over the staff, which was an improvement imo. That OLman from Ft. Wayne didn't have Purdue in his top 10 and he just officialled this past weekend. Add in they seem to be hitting Texas and Louisiana super hard, very tough read.

I believe both of strickland's parents are Purdue grads. Mom might have been an athlete?

Spells is most likely an IU and WVU battle

There's a family connection to Purdue but I don't know what it is.

Yea, dead time right now until the 24th, when coaches can go out and meet with kids again, I believe.

I'm fairly certain Spells is down to us and West Virginia with Miami being third.

Monds, who knows right now. I don't think he's a lock to anyone. A month ago, I would have bet on us. We are only taking two, but if he wanted to commit to us, does the staff say yes and then take Spells as well? I think Spells is a take no matter what so it depends on who commits first. If Spells commits to us, it doesn't matter, there isn't a spot for Monds. I wouldn't rule out Wisconsin I this either way.

Purdue is in it, but all the talk has been on Indiana and Penn State. It was interesting he was trying to get a Arkansas recruit to flip to us though.

Monds looks like he's ready to commit to Nebraska at any second when you look at his twitter.

For our information, please explain.
Most reasonable Nebraska fans know that he needs time and they can't keep running out coaches. They also accept that they aren't a 10 win program anymore, but instead, belong in the same breath as Purdue and iu. Barring a total bottoming out (1-2 wins), most Nebraska fans feel he has, needs, and deserves another 2 years. It's the minority that still think they are at osu's level.

But they have the facilities and stadium to be on that level, so it's going to be much easier for them to get there than Purdue or iu imo. Their stadium is beautiful. NFL esc. I'd recommend the trip. Most Nebraska fans are awesome!

He better start winning, and quick.

His contract is through 2026. After next year, they have to either extend or release him or teams will start to recruit against not only him, but against his contract.

Plus his buyout isn't large at all.

Frost isn't safe in the least, especially at a place like Nebraska where the AD was just let go and the new AD may want his own guy in there.

Second the comments on the stadium, and the people are fantastic. been out twice since they joined and were treated like gold both times, just good people.

Nebraska lived off those big swede/German farm kids for their front line for decades. That pipeline has dried up, and they are stuck trying to recruit kids to the furthest west BT school (although IMO both Omaha and Lincoln are pretty cool towns, hope to do more of the Haymarket next time I'm out). They, like Iowa, have a rabid fanbase on their side and the nations longest sell out streak, plus an admin that wants the winning tradition restored. Agree on Frost. I think I've mentioned it on the Purdue board, we had Husker fans at our Tailgate a few years ago and when I asked them what they thought about their new coach, they replied "If he can't get us back, nobody will. We will be done." Harsh reality outlook!

I thought that as well, but everyone I've spoke to on Nebraska said, while they were surprised with the swap, it had nothing to do with Frost. Moo's only was focusing on football. They really want to improve bball out there, which shouldn't be super hard considering their coach and facilities. Basketball arena is amazing. Great crowd at every game.

It seems like they are going to hire an AD that knows Frost really well from what I've heard. Like I said, most believe Frost has time and Moos wasn't sent packing because of the state of the football program.

I get a lot of the same sentiment. It is Frost or bust.

I knew very little about Frost when he came over from UCF. From what little I did know, I assumed he was a great hire for them.

That said, I have had more of a chance to see & hear him since then, and I am completely unimpressed. Like Harbaugh, he is inarticulate in his public speaking. On the field, he seems to wear a WTF expression as his go-to look. He does not appear to inspire anyone. His recruiting has been mediocre. Essentially, he appears to me to be college football's Archie Miller.

On the field, he's 12-20 overall, with 4, 5, and 3 wins. In the BT, he's 9-17, with 3 wins each season.

As a practical matter, I think he has to get to 6-6 this season to survive. He's got probable wins with Illinois, Purdue, Fordham & Buffalo at home. Probable losses v. Oklahoma, Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin & Iowa. That would put him at 4-5 with toss-up games against NW at home, and MSU & Minnesota on the road. The most likely outcome, in my view, is 5-7. He's got a $5M buyout. With a new AD, I think he's gone after this year.
