I think Dusty is showing what a disaster Juwan really was at UM. Already trending that way. As a college player, Juwan had some of the best low post moves I’ve seen in 40 years. But as a coach, he turned out to be a toxic presence. UM is going to be a problem for the league for the next several years.

The B10 needs the bigger "brands" to be good. It'll be a good thing if May gets them back to the upper half of the league. Just like it'll be a good thing if Woody can do it for IU. Just like it'll be a good thing if UCLA can come in and be competitive at the top. Just like it'll be a good thing if Izzo can get something back and rolling at MSU.

Disaster? Overall he did better than woodson has done. He made an elite 8 and a sweet sixeteen. Sure his last year stunk but he did far better in the tourney than woodson has. Maybe he is toxic but he did well in the tourney

This shows in the TV ratings -- schools like Purdue are ratings killers. The TV rating when UConn played San Diego St and Purdue were both about the same all-time low viewership.

Yep, and since they're a real major brand, it'll help the conference out. Its kind of like the Blue Jays and Rays leading the AL East for a prolonged stretch...it isn't good for the league.

Not Purdue's problem, they're holding up their end of the deal. Everyone else needs to raise their game.

Yeah, I agree, but i can’t help but root against those big programs. With the portal and NIL it’s nice to see a NU beat out a big spender.

Recruiting approach, capacity, and abilities... Historically, they've been a regional based recruiting program. That has served them very well in terms of consistent competitiveness. But you can count on one hand, in the last half a century, how many nationally competitive teams they've had.

Overall size of fanbase... There's a reason why the Crossroads Classic ended...its because IU, and its fans, carried that event every single year. Despite IU rarely having the best team in the event. These last two years have brought out quite a lot of Purdue fans, outside their region...but historically, they don't travel well, even an hour away to Indianapolis.

National relevance and perception... before Edey, outside NW Indiana, Purdue was an afterthought...despite having some really good teams. They didn't get much national coverage, basically the only prime time, nationally covered and followed games were ones against IU. It'll be interesting what happens now that Edey is gone. I'm sure Purdue will keep being good, but will anyone outside NW Indiana care any more?

I don't know if it can be explained (certainly not in a way that you'll accept), but the titles do make a program more prominent. I think a big part of it also is that we're the flagship state school, the one with Indiana in it's name, and no St afterwards. And, the "Knight-effect"; bigger personality/persona than Gene or Matt.

NC St is certainly second fiddle to NC here, and they have championships. You guys have had great success and definitely more recently. But, your path to ever being close to remembered long term as elite, with the likes of Duke, UNC, KU and UK, would have to include championshipS (yes, multiple). Otherwise long-term, you're closer to the NC St and OK St's of the world. And, if you aren't winning B10 championships and getting to E8s or better, you'll be forgotten quickly.

National relevance and perception... before Edey, outside NW Indiana, Purdue was an afterthought...despite having some really good teams. They didn't get much national coverage, basically the only prime time, nationally covered and followed games were ones against IU.

This is the majority of D1 teams. The media has their favorites just as the media has favorites in politics. That doesn't mean the other teams aren't relevant.

As far as the National Championship game viewership, last year's was the lowest. Seems to me the common denominator is UConn.

Recruiting Rankings don't really have a good history of ranking players.

You'd be hard pressed to make me believe Michigan will be top 4 this season in the B1G. They'll be competitive in games but Indiana, Purdue, Maryland, Ohio State, UCLA all could be pre-season top 25 teams. Michigan State and Rutgers have wildcards in Izzo and the top-5 duo, respectively, that could see them shoot up the board. May is the only new HC of those teams and I don't trust that he's better than any of the established ones anyway.

Four 5* in the portal when there's ~20 5* a class doesn't tell me that rankers don't know how to rank recruits.

It'll be a good thing if May gets them back to the upper half of the league.

With UConn as the constant, their title games vs San Diego St and PU drew the same record low viewership. PU didn’t provide a larger audience than a mid major school.

If one were to actually look at the tv viewership data reported for the NCAA title game, you would find that viewership has been declining at a fairly substantial rate since the 1980s-90s where viewership was about twice what was reported for this year. A plot of the data shows a pretty steady decline with some scatter and the occasional blip but fairly consistent in direction.

One can hypothesize the cause, but SDSU, Purdue and UConn have little if anything to do with the trend. Personally, I think that it is because players are more perceived as being divorced from the general student body. NIL is likely to harden that perception. Add in the demographic decline in enrollment of men as the percentage of the student body and it correlates with the viewership data.

Purdue is the only B1G program to having been voted #1 in the polls for three consecutive years. Since poll voters are distributed nationally, it would seem that Purdue is relevant to them based upon their actions. That is somewhat in contradiction to your post.
