Soccer

Isnt Armstrong a purpose-built stadium? I dont remember the pitches being that bad. If so they need to sack the groundsman.

Good to hear about your kid's coaching standards. There is hope then.

So I blame the antiquated coaching.

The weather only affects running (since I dont remember water pooling on the field) -- trust me in this neck of the woods, it is like breathing in water. So you won't be running as much or if you plan, you need to be supremely fit.

I have played here in the business/company leagues for quite a number of years. If you are a winger, CM then you would be sucking in air. (I normally play a 6 so its easier for me.)
They are leaner here too for obvious reasons but equally feisty.
I’m m just asking in general. Doesn’t wet grass slow down the ball? It does in golf.

Most pro teams in England prefer to wet the pitch before the start and during half time.... and this is England! (Assuming that they have good drainage systems.)

What slows the game down is the length of the grass. Nowadays in the pro game the grass is almost like a putting surface (to use your golf example.) An inch tall usually.

Wetter surfer (but not pooling) allows for slicking passing.

The balls have changed too -- like golf balls. They move differently nowadays.

When McM used to play, they were a lot heavier and especially when damp. (And they were an improvement from the 60-70s balls which were basically medicine balls with air inside when wet.) Passing was different but they did cross the ball in the air a lot back then.

That's why I bet later as they do studies on soccer players and the high incidence of dementia, there will be a direct correlation. (I have a double whammy of having played soccer and rugby. So.... 😰)

On short grass that ball will skip when you shoot it

Plus boots/balls have changed allowing for better control and passing. Thats why IU soccer or the BIG (as you mentioned before ) is anachronistic.

Doesnt help encourage or widen the game in the US. It just makes people look out for set plays and goals/scorelines only.

Armstrong's surface was replaced a couple years ago with a stronger grass...it should be decent. Not sure what the hybrid was. Maybe zoysia or bermuda mix? The furthest north I have seen bermuda was Jasper.

Morning games on wet/dew fields are always dicey for pre-teen keepers. 😄

More likely a 5G or 6G hybrid.

Interesting they didn't go hybrid.

What a job... Spending all day looking at various grass --or better still,
imagine a conversation with the grass guy after smoking some herbs!

@larsIU saturday my friend's kid was playing in the state tournament at soccer park. so a group of us went for lunch and checked out the games. high school soccer. first high school game i've watched in decades. it was shockingly bad. some of the worst soccer i've ever watched. the academy's prohibition of kids playing high school is a real shame. it's gutted high school soccer. and i understand it, but as a life experience for the kids it's a shame. the park was packed. stands full. kids screaming wearing their school colors. cheerleaders. it was an event like nothing you see at the club level. so much better environment. it's a shame as those are high school memories academy players will never have or experience

I think that happens to a degree with hockey and tennis, too, here in Chicago.

I'm actually happy about that for hockey: maybe my kid can make the high school team.

To Brad's point, probably the only remaining highschool sports which truly still have the best players are basketball and football. And I question basketball b/c of the prep schools.

It's sad but it's the price we pay for the US becoming a true soccer giant. To be sure, we're really the only country in the world that ties atheltics to academics with such largesse. Especially at the college level. Or, we're becoming more like the rest of the world in that if you're good enough you'd be dumb to risk injury in a meaningless highschool game if you truly have an opportunity to get paid playing soccer.

Also, yes, i know the highschool season is over b/c tournaments are back on and some of us had to spend Saturday standing in 37 degree cold. I agree that having to make a choice to play club or highschool is dumb. Oh well.

I wish IU’s team liked each other as much. God we suck so hard.
Is there internal feuding going on?
Say what you will about Painter in the tournament, but he does a phenomenal job keeping players together. He does lose a player here and there to transfer, but it's typically for playing time or guys who think they'll be a better fit elsewhere. And he strategically brings in maybe one transfer a season, and they always seem to fit right in.

my god this board. the sacrosanct soccer thread. all that's really left of the board just got poisoned with purdue basketball talk. god save us
No no. I tried to steer it back to lamentations of a once proud IU basketball tradition. I'll take a 9th soccer championship to tide me over til swimming season. That's what we are now. Is the women's team any good this year. Field hockey sucked. Football should be disbanded. I think the baseball team is ok but never contender b/c we live north of georgia. Tennis?

Pacers are middling
Colts are rebuilding
Hoosiers suck
Purdue is good

thank god Butler sucks balls. And **** ND. Always.

who knows. i barely follow any iu sports. in truth this is about the lowest i've ever been for any sports interest. there was a period where i watched a lot of college bball and college fball. then nearly every bulls game with jordan pippen and the worm. then probably a ten year stretch where i never missed a barca game. not one. and i watched a ton of champions league during that entire stretch as well. ronaldo too a ton of his games. now i'm barely watching soccer too.

I’ve been watching a ton of NBA games. Got a free pass of some sort to NBA all access or something with the YTTV sub. Might keep it. Another golden age of the NBA right now. Plus games are shorter than football.

Oh almost forgot Man U sucks too. ****ing desert for me right now. Luckily some of my favorite disc golfers are busy gearing up this offseason for another showcase next year!!!

oh my god. i've actually replaced sports with sports documentaries. i'd rather scratch my eyes out than watch disc golf but would stay up until 3 am watching a documentary on guys trying to break into the professional disc golf league. just the other night i watched one on two guys playing minor league baseball trying to make it. fascinating. and i hate baseball

I like watching the historical stuff that's kind of off the beaten path.

Before kids, I used to watch so much.

Now, the only thing that gets me interested is FanDuel.

It sucks for the boys...I've had clients kids playing MLS Next that go to Noblesville, have to watch Noblesville/Carmel at packed fields/stadiums, with girls wearing shirts with players pictures on them, and he laments playing before 50 parents at Grand Park some Saturday. 😄 The three best '08-'10 boys in Bloomington won't play HS.

ECNL Girls (Nike) and Girls Academy (Adidas) basically don't start seasons til after HS season is over...so the girls don't miss anything. Works better for them.

My daughter can't wait to play HS. Playing National teams/games is great and all, but I think she looks forward more to playing the North/South game, or taking on her old teammates that will go to Center Grove.

What's a soccer bar/place in downtown Indy that 1) might have the ability to get ESPN+, 2) would show Indiana/Virginia Sunday at 1pm (instead of the Colts), and 3) allows kids?

Trying to figure out a way to watch before basketball at Gainbridge Sunday.

Some off-the-cuff, half-baked thoughts from my sick bed:

AAU, et al. takes the tribalism out of sports and just makes it an activity.

There are all kinds of personal benefit from sport for the athletes. But the reason, I think, sports are so big in the world is because of the tribal aspect. And I think playing for your tribe or gaining prestige through playing for your tribe are benefits most athletes would enjoy.

Tribalism can be a bad thing, obviously. But if tempered, it brings a sense of belonging and identity that human beings naturally crave.

Doing the AAU, non-tribal route, then, involves a trade-off for each athlete on multiple vectors that must be measured by each person.

Sounds like a gay bar or place where they do trans performances with brunch. Check those out.
