IU Targets in the Portal Discussion Thread (UPDATED 4/25)

I hope not.

Culture killer . . . like Trey Young.

Caleb would possibly be a roller coaster at IU. But to win, you need talent and athleticism. We don't have nearly enough right now, and Caleb would address that. Plus, we don't know if the problem at UNC was 100% Caleb.

It could blow up, but I would rather gamble on talented players rather than get low ceiling players like Ethan Morton.

If we get:

Shed
Love
Ledlum

plus another athletic wing who can shoot (e.g. Nicholas Timberlake) or big who can shoot (e.g. Jamison Battle)

That would be a great haul

Yep, that's the fence I'm on. You obviously need a certain level of talent to prevail in this league and Love certainly has shown that ability in the past. I would say where there is smoke there is usually fire and it's pretty telling that Love was certainly front and center of a lot of UNC's problems last year. Bacot and Davis returning while Love transferred out is pretty damning.

That being said, IU does have some glaring holes to address and there are certain players whose talent exceeds their baggage. Just have to hope there is a level of accountability from the staff as well as the veterans.

JHS at times took terrible shots, but Woody didn't reign him in. Why? Partly it's because we had to rely on TJD and JHS to produce offense for us, and nobody else was close to be a consistent scorer.

The other reason is JHS produced at times, sometimes in a huge way. If a guy can produce (even if erratically), you have to value that more than a guy who consistent produces very little.

Didn’t seem to kill the culture last year.
You're right . . . but that was a different team.

There's got to be a reason why Davis is letting him go . . .

. . . I guess one question is "what do you think of Hubert Davis as a coach?"

Another might be "can Woodson - with X's 'help' - tame any wild streaks in Love?"

Is Woodson in such a bad spot that he'd have to sacrifice culture to gain talent and athleticism?

If so, oy . . . .

X? You sure he's the one to do this?

If a player comes in , plays well , and helps us win , then people on here will love him . There have been players here we thought were great until they left , and then we realized what a dick they were . Luke Recker comes to mind !!!

It will blow up. Love is not the answer.

Woodson, like all coaches, is in the business to win. Sacrifice “culture?” How is that measured? Is this something you measure for all our potential players? Do we have a “culture scale?” How did X score? Did we lose or gain culture points when Armaan Franklin left? Can Love improve his score, assuming it’s low? I have so many questions.

Do you know for a fact that Love is responsible for UNC's terrible play? Do you know for a fact that Love is a cancer to team culture?

Watched a lot of UNC this year - he'd be polarizing. Doesn't play much defense, turns it over 3-5 times a game. UNC fans complained about his body language. But he can score.

Body language tends to change when your team scores more than their team. Remember our “body language” against PSU in January?

People are now saying that Caleb Love is not coming to IU
He would have been massively intriguing, but I don't know how the would've gotten along with CMW. The one thing that Woody requires is defense. It seems like D is the one thing that makes or breaks playing time with him. That doesn't seems to be Love's strength or interest.

I would love to have been a fly on the way during CMW's phone call with Love to see how it went. You've got to think that Woody laid it out for him what would be expected of him at IU.

I'm all about the portal, but pretty crazy that the portal is open before the tournament even begins. Schools like Louisville get a huge advantage to host portal targets while schools in the postseason have to simultaneously prepare for games.

Hopefully the IU staff is working hard on this because you would assume we have at least 3 openings with the impending departures of TJD and JHS, and likely 4 if Logan is gone as everyone predicts. IMHO, we need at least 2 impact transfers, if not three. We need 2 guys who can score, at least one person who can play the 4/5, and at least one deadly shooter (regardless of position).

I'll keep a running list of the targets, and where they ended up. If someone else has already created such a thread, let me know and I'll delete this.

UPDATED THU, 3/30/23

The latest that I can see:

Payton Sparks, Ball State Big
- committee

Nicholas Timberlake, Towson PG/SG
- hosted in-home visit with entire IU staff
- no IU visit
- visited UNC; presumed lock for UNC

Chris Ledlum, Harvard 3
- hosted in-home visit with IU
- IU visit scheduled

Caleb Love, UNC 2
- mutual interested

Kadin Shedrick , UVA 5
- hosted zoom call with Woodson

Jamison Battle, Minnesota 4
- hosted in-home IU visit

Micah Handlogten, 7'1" from Marshall is interesting. We have apparently contacted him. As a freshman this year, for every 40 minutes played he averaged 12 pts (71% shooting), 15.6 rebs, 1.8 assists, and 3.7 blocks.

Contingency plan for Shedrick I assume? Think Handlogten has three years left, could be thinking longer team with this addition if we don't think Flory or some of the other 5's in the 24 class aren't attainable.

Probably....kid was a no name coming out of HS. Marshall was by far his best offer. Now he's visiting Florida, and NC State, Auburn, Arkansas and IU are contacting him as well. One thing I noticed---he avg 1.8 assists and 2 steals per 40 minutes, so he'a apparently not a stiff.

He or Shedrick would be great.....the Deloach kid would also be a good get, but he seems a lot like a thinner & quicker version of Sparks. with a less defined skillset.

Why Leal doesn't play he and duncomb are not contributing thats two spots we need depth not cheerleaders
Is Leal a good student? My cousin coaches at his old high school now, but out of college coached at the the juco and mid major level. A kid with a good GPA and happy to be a scout player was important to the program. A kid didn't walk on unless he raised the GPA average of the team.

I have an idea... IU could actually recruit high school kids and develop them over 4-5 years creating consistency throughout the program. What am I thinking... just nonsense.

Also, the underhand granny-style free throw would clearly result in a higher percentage.

We should mandate all of our players adopt this.

I have no insight but if Love is out, it’s better to know now and not be strung along. Maybe he just wants to play in his home state if Missouri…maybe the SEC was the draw over Big 10….maybe he sees himself as BMOC there…perhaps there was something about IU he didn’t like (gasp)….maybe NIL wallet was opened wide there but not here…I could go on. I wanted him at IU if for no other reason we have four openings and lost a ton of players. But I mostly want good players who want to play for IU and if Love isn’t on board, that’s really okay. It’s probably better for both parties he goes elsewhere.

It’s still all speculation
