IU Targets in the Portal Discussion Thread (UPDATED 4/25)

Thanks for the vague attempt at extortion.

Not sure if you understand how the world works. Extortion is obtaining something via threats or force. Nobody is forcing you to sign up for anything.

I told you what the insiders have said, and nobody is forcing you to buy anything. If you choose not to buy any service, nobody cares. What a total weirdo post by a rando.

No one talking about the guard from Baylor? Sounds like alot of overlap with the type of player XJ is, but why not have them playing alongside each other and spelling each other? We need quickness and shooting and he sounds like that's the type of player he is. Didn't see any mention of IU in his projected list of suitors.

I saw that yesterday and immediately thought of XJ. If he gets his redshirt, then it's moot. Was thinking we would have heard something by now. Yesterday's chatter on the other thread really didn't say anything new.
I think we're coming out of the dead period and school is out in 4 weeks, so we're gonna see a lot of activity in the next couple weeks.

I’m honored to be called a rando by someone who post the amount of drivel you do

I wonder about this as well. Of the 18 guys I've seen mentioned with IU, Keshon Gilbert from UNLV looks like the only true combo guard.....maybe Girard from Syracuse but his assists totals aren't impressive.

Yep. If this NCAA tournament showed anything, it was that a team can't have too many talented guards. Baylor showed that a couple of years ago as well. I'm blanking on that Kansas team last year, but I would assume they had really strong guards as well.

Unlike Purdue this year, I don't think we can hope to rely on our two incoming Freshman guards for much. I'd love to see them come in and surprise, but we could definitely use at least 2 strong combo guards in the portal, with one of them needing to have the point skills to spell XJ.

As much as I hate the portal, it is great for bringing in a one year "loaner" to get transition through a Freshman's first year. Purdue would've been a much better team last year if they could've found a better experienced guard last year to do that with Smith and Loyer. That was really their big miss (and they obviously knew it because they seemed to strike out with nearly every name they went after in the portal last year).

Why are we not recruiting every athletic guard in the portal who can shoot?
Look at the current expected roster: XJ - G, Galloway - G , Leal - G, Cupps - G, Newton - G, Gunn - G, Banks - F, Sparks - C, Reneau - C. 6 of the 9 are guards. We need some size on the wing and that’s by an large what they are going after Ledlum, Battle etc.

Cryer most likely wants to play the 1. Not share it like he did at Baylor.

If Trey starts for us at the 2, that is not good
Depends on who else is on the court. If you can get a legitimate wing scoring threat opposite of him and/or a 4 man who can stretch the floor I think he could once again have another efficient scoring year. Not ever going to get 5 high usage, high volume guys on the court together.

My guess: Trey will start, and be a better shooter next year than he was this year. Woody is nothing if not loyal to guys who have sacrificed for him.
Staff likes him better off the bench, where his high energy provides a spark and he's more efficient. fwiw - His productivity drops when starting. That can of course change based on his and others development. It's a long summer .... so ...

That's what I read too, but it seems to me our plan this year was essentially to start two 1s. IMO, we still could use a PG, a solid outside shooter and perimeter quickness. He sounds like one of the best fits for all 3. I get if he doesn't want to play with XJ, but the bottom line is, we have a starting guard spot available and as this past year showed us, there are no guarantees about who will be on the floor. I'd be chasing this guy.

PS. also was easier playing JHS and XJ together because of JHS size, so that would leave us small in the backcourt if those 2 were on the floor together. Still think we need his skills though.

Regardless of starting or coming off the bench, he will see significant PT. He makes those around him more productive and with 1 more year he is exactly what Woody wants on the floor

Is Leal a good student? My cousin coaches at his old high school now, but out of college coached at the the juco and mid major level. A kid with a good GPA and happy to be a scout player was important to the program. A kid didn't walk on unless he raised the GPA average of the team.
Direct admit to Kelly...

Any walkon can be good on the scout team. Leal needs to go and give somebody else a real chance at playing.

The rotation typically will be refined down to seven or eight players. To say Leal needs “to go” is just not the case. There are 13 scholarships and we have four openings. And a shooter like Leal may be called upon in situations - if he wishes to stay, it’s not at all to the detriment of the team.

Agree. Every team needs a couple to 3 guys content being scholarship practice bodies.

Yet he needs to develop to be productive when called upon. Whether it is because of foul trouble, injuries or mop up time, he has to show he is worthy of that schollie. Not too many Mr. Basketballs in Indiana have been a bust quite like him. That is not ridicule either but fact. The problem is people do not want facts today. They want their truths. I'm sure he is a great person ,but that does not help on the court against opponents. I hope he works on his game more but I'm wondering if he has become content in his role.

Agree. Must have been a down year in the state when he won. Happens. Seems like Indiana has had years like that where Mr. basketball ends up at an MVC school.
Jaden Ivey was the best player in Indiana that year. Leal likely won because his team was undefeated when COVID hit and he was an IU commit.

It was a weird year too. COVID prematurely ended the state tournament. Ivey likely would have won it that year had he not elected for a prep school. Plenty of talent in that state that year. Galloway, Leal, Nijel Pack, Dre Davis, Tony Perkins, etc

I'm all about the portal, but pretty crazy that the portal is open before the tournament even begins. Schools like Louisville get a huge advantage to host portal targets while schools in the postseason have to simultaneously prepare for games.

Hopefully the IU staff is working hard on this because you would assume we have at least 3 openings with the impending departures of TJD and JHS, and likely 4 if Logan is gone as everyone predicts. IMHO, we need at least 2 impact transfers, if not three. We need 2 guys who can score, at least one person who can play the 4/5, and at least one deadly shooter (regardless of position).

I'll keep a running list of the targets, and where they ended up. If someone else has already created such a thread, let me know and I'll delete this.

UPDATED THU, 3/30/23

The latest that I can see:

Payton Sparks, Ball State Big
- committee

Nicholas Timberlake, Towson PG/SG
- hosted in-home visit with entire IU staff
- no IU visit
- visited UNC; presumed lock for UNC

Chris Ledlum, Harvard 3
- hosted in-home visit with IU
- IU visit scheduled

Caleb Love, UNC 2
- mutual interested

Kadin Shedrick , UVA 5
- hosted zoom call with Woodson

Jamison Battle, Minnesota 4
- hosted in-home IU visit
Harvard (Ledlum) and Ware visiting.........

We need to cast a wider net to include more guard prospects. Trey is ideally a reserve who can play 15-20 min backing up a 1 or a 2.

Hopefully they can seal the deal with Ledlum and/or Ware and not let them leave campus before a commit.

We did reach out to him-----Cryer---no indication it went anywhere.
