It isn't in schools

I think parents shouldn’t be stupid. I think if parents are paying attention they know exactly what is being taught in their child’s classroom. They should be attending their parent teacher conferences and reading their information and talking to their child. If they don’t trust the teacher, then they are free to homeschool or switch schools. If enough parents are concerned with a teacher than obviously administrators should look into. One parent now can cause a book to be banned and an investigation started. The teacher shortage will hit record numbers this fall. And you’ll wonder why.
You seem to take exception with the fact that teachers are looking over their shoulder more now days.

They should be.

They’re entrusted with the country’s most valuable resource, so anything they do due to spoil that resource should meet harsh condemnation and punishment.

“Teacher” should be the most anxiety ridden profession in America, especially if you step outside your mandate.

You’re not their friend, you’re not their confidant, you’re not their guidance counselor or life coach.

Have your own kid, go into social work, find friends your own age.

Too many teachers have become politicians.

A parent of a student at Bob Graham Education Center – a kindergarten through eighth grade school in Miami Lakes – objected to Gorman’s poem “The Hill We Climb,” for which they erroneously listed Oprah Winfrey as the author/publisher, according to documents obtained by the Florida Freedom to Read Project.

It “is not educational and have (sic) indirectly hate messages,” the complaint said, adding that the poem would “cause confusion and indoctrinate students.”

The same parent made similar complaints about “Love to Langston,” a poetry-based biography of Black poet Langston Hughes; “The ABCs of Black History” and two books about Cuba, complaints obtained by the nonprofit group show.

So, this person is making educational decisions for the whole district.
The book is still in the school. This is like the Fishers library complaint from a few weeks ago. They moved the book/poems from the elementary section of the school to the middle school section.

Ah, those story problems

A train is traveling eastbound at 47 mph and another train is traveling northwest at 55 mph...

Those story problems certainly groomed me to be very anti-train.
Maybe just write a freaking math problem instead of trying to inject drama into society at every turn and then point the finger when it gets called out.

^^^^ lmao
Post the lyrics, rube. Nothing to do with your fantasy.

"Oh, but you don't know what Steely Dan means". Yes, I do, rube. But the women I've known have no need for a dildo. That's your wheelhouse.

That's ridiculous. If they took those books out of the schools, that's poor decision-making.

But it's hard to craft a rule or process that isn't prone to abuse by such a lack of wisdom. So I'm not sure anecdotal stories like that one should be enough to cast the whole system as one or right wing extremism.

Is someone going to tell this old clueless MF or not? I'm not - it's too funny.

Hey you got Amanda Gorman’s inauguration poem banned by a school! Congratulations!! Those types of words and books are truly harmful to children. Much more so than say, guns.

Wrong yet again, Zeke.

What exactly do you feel you’re accomplishing in this thread?

Because from where I sit, nearly every post you make is further proof of what the thread is saying.

What do you call banning Amanda Gorman’s poem?
So is this the incident you are talking about? In a K-8 school, they moved the book from the elementary section to the middle school section?

“It was determined at the school that ‘The Hill We Climb’ is better suited for middle school students and, it was shelved in the middle school section of the media center. The book remains available in the media center,” he said.

That’s some serious book banning there . . . .

Since you’re TMP you get no warning. One wrong move and you’re gone permanently. Same for the other name you’re posting under.
Isn't that a warning?

Are there guns in school or a pro-gun curriculum?

Yeah, but why did they move it? There lies the rub.

I am not familiar with the poem but:

“It was determined at the school that ‘The Hill We Climb’ is better suited for middle school students".

There is the poem, I am not big on poetry and got bored about halfway through and was just kind of skimming. I didn't see anything overly objectionable but I have a 1st, 4th, and 5th grader at home currently and they wouldn't have made it 1/4 way into that before they were done. It is going to be over most kid's their age heads.

That's bullshit, and I think you know it.
They (re)moved it because of the functionally illiterate buffoon who submitted the complaint.

First, I hate you for making me go and read the whole thing to see if I missed anything. There is a part that alludes to the Jan 6th riot:

"We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it.
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy.
This effort very nearly succeeded.
But while democracy can be periodically delayed,
it can never be permanently defeated."

That is most likely the part the person took issue with. I still think it would fly over elementary school kid's heads. In order to get to the meaning you almost have to engage in political side picking and kids that age aren't great at compare and contrast, they are kind of blank pages.

I didn't watch Joe's inauguration and I am not a poetry aficionado by any means, but the adjectives used to describe that poem were kind of over the top after having read it. (Or I am potentially just an uncultured trogolodyte, which in this case I am open to the accusation.)

No, the poem is vastly overrated.

Ok, so not just me. I like reading and literature but poetry (outside of when it has a band backing it) has never been my thing. Same with Shakespeare. Completely understand why we have kids study him in school (his plays are the basis for a ton of things that came after) but Lord have mercy I hated having to have a translator for plays written in my own language.

Is that actually supposed to be a poem?

Shakespeare is definitely an acquired taste and takes a lot of work. For me, it's worth it. I wish I had the time and will to spend more time with it. And I think the older you get, the more you appreciate his observations on the human condition.

Here's hoping ChatGPT gets to the point where some really great writer can use it to make more plays of the same quality.
