It isn't in schools

I do remember an algebra one the class protesting to the teacher asking why we had to learn this. Everything was abstract and there was no appearance of any practical application. As an adult I realize how stupid the teacher was because she couldn't explain it to the class.
Yeah I think we all had to learn things that we wondered why we needed to learn that. I remember having to learn the capital of every state and thinking why do I need to know this even though I thought it was interesting. Having said that I do think that knowing some general geography is good. I don't think a lot of kids today would have any idea where Texas or any other state is. It's kinda funny because I'll play a state game like this and invariably I'll get NH and Vermont mixed uop. :)

The $300,000 is an over-inflated number that is being used to sensationalize this. They did a similar move several years ago and the cost was less than a third of this.

To the actual books though, again these are the types of books being moved to the adult section (not banned) in Fishers.

The one in the lower right where a man is drawn bent over spreading his ass cheeks so you can see his butthole while discussing the joys of anal sex is some high quality content for a 13 year old. "But, but they can see this online..." Agreed and parents have to be vigilant over that. However, that isn't the kind of content you would expect them to see on Nickelodeon because that is deemed a kid space. Yeah, you still have to keep an eye on what kids look at even in those spaces but on things that would be weird to read out loud at a public meeting because they would be viewed as obscene, we should be able to agree that they should be put in a spot where kids are not being directed to go for content that is supposedly appropriate for them.

Kids were able to get hold of nudey mags back in the day, adults were intelligent enough to realize that didn't mean you should stick Playboy on the same shelf as Highlights, unfortunately today's adults (or a sizable portion of them) are stupid.
@zeke4ahs can you give us your theory on having the book teaching a 13 year old the joys of a dick up their anus?

I've defended SEL before, but if this is how it is being used--to emotionally persuade children to buy into the SJW oppression narrative--it needs to be eliminated.

Even if I agreed with the underlying theory, I'd be against this--teachers are not trained to be therapists and even if they were, the code of conduct for mental health workers would never allow them to use such tactics to inculcate children into a particular political viewpoint.

I don’t think it is so much the content that Zeke supports. It’s more the educators/ admins.

She takes anything other than trusting teachers and administrators implicitly as a personal affront.
It's because a lot teachers and administrators don't want to admit they actively or tacitly support the Marxist theory of education.

Fox News… I bet that was fair and balanced. I’ll have to find another outlet to read about the curriculum without all the hyperbole. Teachers are trained to deal with emotions and have to do a type of therapy with kids multiple times a day.

Hey you got Amanda Gorman’s inauguration poem banned by a school! Congratulations!! Those types of words and books are truly harmful to children. Much more so than say, guns.

I think parents shouldn’t be stupid. I think if parents are paying attention they know exactly what is being taught in their child’s classroom. They should be attending their parent teacher conferences and reading their information and talking to their child. If they don’t trust the teacher, then they are free to homeschool or switch schools. If enough parents are concerned with a teacher than obviously administrators should look into. One parent now can cause a book to be banned and an investigation started. The teacher shortage will hit record numbers this fall. And you’ll wonder why.

That article doesn’t even claim the books were banned. Where on earth did you get that?

For someone who is always talking about others getting duped, you sure fall for some silly stuff.

Where did I say they were? They were moved and sections were empty. I’ll try to find the petition parents in the township wrote to who were upset about the empty shelves. Doubt that I am duped much about much in education. Imagine I’m a little more attuned than folks scouring the internet to find something to be outraged about.

You'll notice I wrote "if this is how it's being used." That was an implicit admission I'm not taking the article at face value and that there could be other facts not reported that would change my impression.

I didn't ask the question I did to you as a loaded statement; I meant it. I'm genuinely curious as to whether you view that article from the Nation as an objective one, just reporting facts, or a slanted one with an agenda behind it that is using charged and maybe false rhetoric to advance the author's point of view?

What a joke of an article.

I like how removing a gay themed book from school libraries and insisting that bathrooms and locker rooms be segregated by sex is now “right wing extremism” pushed on everyone by the right.

You people are insane.
What do you call banning Amanda Gorman’s poem? And why can’t a gay themed book be in a school library? Seriously?

Well if there are no books on shelves I’m not sure what to call it if not book banning. While they spend time and money combing through them?
In Post #1021 , you just asked "Where did I say they were?" Now, when it's pointed out to you, your response is "well, they were." Where do we go from here?

When the books are being reviewed, they are not "officially or legally prohibited" from being read. That's what banning a book means.

Moving a book from the children's section of the library to the adult section of the library is not banning the book. It is a decision about age appropriateness. This was covered previously.

It can as long as it is age appropriate. Just like with a straight themed book. Why don't you believe age-appropriate rules apply to gay themed books?

I do. Probably middle school
That's what everyone I've seen argues about. The article you posted calls people "right wing extremists" who might think that the age appropriateness for some of these books is maybe a few years older (like in high school instead of junior high).

That's my problem with the article you posted and sometimes with the rhetoric you use about these things. You actually are much closer in your positions on this to the people you are arguing with here than you think.

I wrote that several days ago and didn’t remember. But again, I’m not sure I was wrong. Taking all the books off of shelves is extreme.

Editor:
I am concerned about the misallocation of taxpayers’ funds at Hamilton East Public Libraray. It is disheartening to witness the contradictory decision of relocating books from one area to another. This wastes financial resources and and undermines the fundamental principle of protecting children by driving them to the adult sections.

What is particularly troubling is that Tiffanie Ditlevson, a library member who supported this wasteful expenditure is now running for Fishers City Council. Regardless of party affiliation, we should all be alarmed by her willingness to approve spending approximately $300,000 of taxpayer money. Such a decision demonstrates a lack of fiscal responsibility and raises doubts about her ability to prioritize the genuine needs of the community.
It is imperative that we exercise our voting power by electing city council members who prioritize the welfare of the community , rather than engaging in political theatrics that offer no tangible benefits to citizens.
Letter to Editor in Fishers paper

Nope not much of the time, in these instances. One parent can prevent an entire school from reading a book, watching a movie, going on a field trip. They may have zero idea of the context.

What do you call banning Amanda Gorman’s poem?

A parent of a student at Bob Graham Education Center – a kindergarten through eighth grade school in Miami Lakes – objected to Gorman’s poem “The Hill We Climb,” for which they erroneously listed Oprah Winfrey as the author/publisher, according to documents obtained by the Florida Freedom to Read Project.

It “is not educational and have (sic) indirectly hate messages,” the complaint said, adding that the poem would “cause confusion and indoctrinate students.”

The same parent made similar complaints about “Love to Langston,” a poetry-based biography of Black poet Langston Hughes; “The ABCs of Black History” and two books about Cuba, complaints obtained by the nonprofit group show.

So, this person is making educational decisions for the whole district.

Yep, and this has happened multiple times. Sometimes publicity sometimes not.

Do you feel that is a neutral piece, written objectively and without partisan bias?
Of course not. It’s pushing back against the extreme right agenda that has been setting the agenda for these cultural battles. I’m heartened that it appears to be starting to cause a well deserved backlash .

It would be interesting to see the total books checked out of school libraries each year for the last ten years.
