Yes, that's an intentionally inflammatory topic title meant to get your attention, but I think the issue raised in the linked article is actually worthy of discussion. In short, DeSantis is actually more dangerous to democracy than Trump, because he shares all the same authoritarian tendencies, but comes with none of the baggage that might hold him back.

Reminds me of the far right extremist recently elected in several countries (ex: Brazil). Very dangerous.

Edit: I’ll sub authoritarian for extremist. Pretty much same thing.

No. That's silly.

But on a more interesting note... saw that betting markets now have DeSantis as the favorite over Trump for 24.

Silly because you don't think the case can be made that DeSantis is truly an autocrat at heart, or silly because you trust American democracy is strong enough to withstand any such person?

I don't really follow the betting markets, but I looked it up after you mentioned that. You can currently buy Ted Cruz to NOT be the nominee for 98 cents on the dollar? I know it takes a lot of bets to make 2 cents add up to anything, but isn't that basically just free money? Who is buying Yes on that one?

Lol. "Equally repressive". Who was repressed during the Trump admin?

This Ruth Ben-Ghiat gal has been getting lots of airplay on lefty TV and the lefty web. Her observations seem to be on the mark most of the time. Hadn't heard her take on DeSantis before.

I'd say a bit of both. But overall, he's just a smart guy who knows how to read the political winds very well.

I'm not sure the Cruz bet is worth the tail risk and the time value of money.

MAKE AMERICA FLORIDA lol.

1. I don't think DeSantis is and
2. Our democracy and our people are strong. Every court dismissed Trunp's claims. Blm and the Dems rioted and set fire to cities all over the country. They won't stand idly by and allow DeSantis or anyone to subvert our system. Governance is challenging bc we are so equally divided, but it also serves to protect our democracy imo.

Glad to talk about DeSantis. It's far more relevant than Trump bc I do believe he is the future of the party for better or worse. I'd love to see him be more open and empathetic and not so trolling and petty

So you want him to be Mittens. We ALL get it. I'm willing to bet $50 his (Mittens) next election will end up with cold fingers and him sucking his thumb through frost bite.

I want a centrist who will quietly guide the ship without crying he has a mandate or is going to be transformative and does his best to let local communities guide themselves. I also want him or her to turn down the dial on the culture wars. Republican or Democrat. The last three years have been awful

DeSantis has transformed quite a bit since his time in Congress. The guy has ambition for miles. Whatever happened to the humble servant? Do we still produce those somewhere? You know, the "They say he will go back to his farm" types.

Mittens would have been a great President. Unfortunately he was in the wrong cycle running against Obama who was not going to be beat by anyone.
In hindsight, that was the last election we had that we could go into thinking, "Eh, whatever happens, we'll be fine." I'm not saying we were smart enough to recognize it at the time, of course.

Mainstream media turned Repubs into assholes. So what, I would rather have an asshole with decent policy than the progressive dipshits as the alternative.

I totally get "Centrist", zero question to that BUT what is that actually? IF lets say the datum/ starting point is "zero" on the X axis, and one party scales from zero to -400, while the other party covers zero to +100, I DO NOT want a "centrist" that is -150.
People, ALL people need to be able to identify a confidence that a leader that they can emulate. Once each individual uses that leaders strength to elevate their own strengths, we grow as an organization (country). I feel what you call a centrist, I call a pussy that a majority has proven they won't follow or be benefited from.

Turn down the culture wars? ... There's only one side that has reignited that, they had no choice. The good old adage of time will heal all wounds was WELL on the way, but the EFFING dem's could not let that happen, it's all they've got. When the Blacks and Hispanics figured out that they were being used AGAIN, they called BS finally. Who was the last Pres that had Kanye freaking West in the oval? Damn, that covers culture wars and the mentally ill.. :)

Forget how extreme the extremes are. You'll never get agreement there, anyway. You will always think the far left is more extreme than the far right, and others will think just the opposite. You want to find a way to objectively identify a centrist? Look for someone who represents the median American on most issues.

Which extreme is dominating the news by their actions and the total wide birth they are being given?
Sorry, but all of the right, except .0001% , just look at the KKK and their ilk and laugh and say piss off go away.
I Hear you, but it's apples to space rocks.

By your math, there are only 93 conservatives in America who don't say "piss off go away" to racists. Yeah, I don't think so.

Like I said, you're never going to get agreement on which side is crazier. You will always look at your side in the best possible light, and the other side in the worst. That's why I suggested you ignore the extremes and just look for the middle American, and build out from there.
