Gunn…

Meh..
I'm for him hope he blows our minds ..
But in reality..He as good as Bates coming out of high school.?
Big Ten coaches & players gonna take everything you got so easily in high school..Away in conference..
If he averages 6 -7 pts...It'll be a positive..

Gunn is truly a GREAT shooter, especially from 3. I do think you are right in that he will average, maybe, 6-7 per game as a frosh/soph. Gunn needs to get stronger and more physical. He has the other tools.

It sounds like he was scoring from all over the court and was very serious and focused in his approach. Man do we need that!
I’ve been saying this kid, even though he’s not ranked very high, will be much more prepared to play as a freshman than Bates. I’m biased for kids who play in central Indiana and have better coaching and usually develop better fundamentals.

So what was your average as high man? I took bowling in Phys Ed at IU, back when Phys Ed was required. It took a 150 average for an "A: at the end of 8 weeks. I had a 149 going into the last day. Nailed it with a 163 on the final round. (insert Queen song, Under Pressure). There was no trophy, only personal satisfaction in being able to still brag about it 50+ years later to you.
Hey, I did too freshman year, 1974. It was fun. Larry Bird was a classmate for what, all of 23 days?

That Larry Bird loss still hurts. There is a photo in a Nashville, IN restaurant of Larry wearing an IU tee-shirt standing next to Knight the day he signed for IU.

Mark Spitz was in my chemistry class. I remember seeing him sitting on the building's front steps with about 10 coeds cooing all about him. He always told the press he had aspirations of being a dentist some day. His image coordinator probably came up with that one. The closest he ever got to being a dentist was in a Bob Hope Comedy skit, comedy for the wrong reasons as it soon became obvious he wasn't going into acting. BTW, He sells real estate and became a multi-millionaire, still not using floss.

Tied up at 15 after 1st quarter. Gunn has a nice shot, 7 points or so. Cooper stuffed guy above the rim: really athletic stuff.

The older we become, the better we were back in the day.

I've watched his highlights against decent competition, and I think he's underrated, I see a bit of Jay Edwards in him, he'll be more than a role player from day 1, There is some Ja Morant in there too. he is going to be a star for us

Basically, Tamar Bates 2.0?
No, I think he's more confident, he's just going to do what he does. I thought Bates would be that player, but he's not so far. The very most thing that encourages me about him is from AAU tape, it looks like he has great chemistry with Lander

No offence but this is said of almost every iu recruit. Bates was going to be a day one stud starter per videos. You tube highlights made peter jurkin look like a super star. We wont know anything until we see gunn play at IU.

Seeing him in person these last two games being guarded by guys taller and just as athletic, CJ was able to elevate to get his shot off and make at a high clip, the kid has deep range and is extremely comfortable and confident. Way more athletic then Bates.

Eric Gordon came to my mind. Does this sound reasonable? Jay Edwards was another one not needing to showboat.
Steve Alford hit the shot at Michigan, & a number of shots at the halftime buzzer. He could could drill it when he wanted to. Edwards was just a different kind of player period.. His spin move layup in the Purdue game is still one of my favorite IU BB plays of all time.

I watched a highlight video of the recent loss to Purdue. You know, because of the late game prior, the broadcast I was watching did't join in until 8:15 left in the first half. It was nice to see what I missed in IU's play. Race made some nice players and they all hung with them until the damn game back on and then it was all PU for awhile as we got down by 13. That's a lot of points to be behind in that atmosphere, but IU played tough and especially Johnson. Their fans haven't witnessed an individual IU performance like that in Mackey for quite some time. I imagine a few sh*t their pants. I'm sorry it didn't turn out better for us. If only Stewart had hit that three pt. shot would have dropped. There were only 10 secs. left. If only X and kept dribbling a couple more secouds and then gotten is off cleanly with his laser stare there.

My original point of writing this...X's step back "2" in front of that huge man was a pure thing of beauty, such a brilliant move punctuated with such a soft touch. I'll have to review Jay's spin move layup, but I do vaguely remember it. Everything about Edwards was so smooth, not in slow motion, but almost to it. Until then, X's is one I'll always cherish. He showed a toughness we want to see more of. He gives us hope, something we need.

His lower body is further along than his upper body but he has deep range with a high arc which makes me think he’s stronger than what it looks like

he tried to dunk on booker Saturday night with his right hand at last second had to switch to a layup without using off hand to gather the ball while in the air, was fouled on the play for an and one.
that play was very impressive to me

His elevation on his shot tells me that he works tirelessly at it which is a very good sign going forward, all things considered.

Like that analysis. And the in game report..
Thanks !

This was first I had actually seen of him admit I thought by his twitter he was 22 on one of the teams and was looking thinking who is #4 raining in shots. Apparently he was hurt and didnt play AAU etc and so his rating isn't as high and won't be any good. Does anyone remember the guy from Evansville that no one knew much about and wasn't that heralded in that great recruiting class some years back? I am by no means saying he is that good but he can outshoot our current team combined .

He's more athletic and is a very good perimeter shooter. Tamar might become a good shooter, but I don't think he was ever touted as being one.
Bates shot 40% from 3 as a senior at IMG and 44% his junior year back home in Kansas City. He was billed as shooter and still believe he is one. It's rare to see a true freshman light it up from distance as the speed of the game and closeouts are much better as is the distance from high school to college three point line. Bates simply lacks any kind of confidence right now and has been pressing hard ever since the start of conference season.

I don’t remember thinking of Bates as a shooter but more of a good at everything but not great at any one thing. I think Bates has ability to be a decent college player that is a more complimentary type than the go to type. I also put “shooter” as a player that when they shoot I think it’s going in. Not one player on IUs team last 4-5 years did I think that.
But watching Gunn this weekend, I thought all of his shots were good.

I was excited for Bates until I saw his 3pt shooting contest performance at Hoosier hysteria
In the literary sense it's called a foreshadowing, a sign of things to come. In this case, Bates' outside shooting was less impressive than what we had hoped for. Through time, things can change. We certainly hope, for victory's sake. Stay tuned in wavelength.

And it wasn’t because he didn’t win or make them all. But his form and body position that alarmed me.
It can all be fixed though.

I've received one trophy in my 71 years of life. It was for recognition as member of a team, "Second Half of the Season Fall Creek Little League Champs". I wish I had it today, but it probably got thrown out in the trash when I went off to college. Trophies had more meaning back then. They were earned with the sweat and tears of actual accomplishment. Just being there wasn't enough. We had no "cookie mothers" on the sideline underneath their tents with coolers, passing out Kool-ad to ensure proper "hydration". Just give me a garden hose and I'll deal with it! Most parents didn't attend the games as the fathers were too busy working and the mothers fixing dinner. There were no Sunday morning travel tournaments to Timbuktu for more intense competition. Games were played back then just for fun, not bragging rights for your grandparents. This didn't scar us into depression later in life. We adjusted well. So in answer to your question, that's what I am. So what are you, "trophy boy"?
get laid.

Something I notice is we have a lot of lefties on this team vs % of general population and I know Calbert was a lefty but in general they seem to have bad shot forms. In HS its going to be a huge advantage when you have more talent as HS kids aren't used to it, but when you meet equal and better competiton and have a hokie shot anyway? I know a lefty whom I can still swing a hammer left handed than he can, he is just awkward . I just wonder sometimes, my dad is lefty and it was always awkward trying to do anything with him

I think a large part of Bates' problem has been his defense, where he has really struggled against higher quality opponents. His on-ball defense is fine, but his awareness off the ball is lacking and he frequently loses his man if there is any sort of rotation. As he started losing minutes because of defense, he started forcing a lot more shots to try to earn more minutes, and it hurt his productivity.

a completely ridiculous comment

Great. Let’s see some of that next season. Perhaps the problem is he lacks feeling comfortable within the offensive flow and is rushing his shot and making poor decisions. Too much too soon to learn for some kids.
