The Senate blocked a Democratic bid to force the Treasury Department to keep sanctions on three Russian companies linked to oligarch Oleg Deripaska, as most Republicans backed the Trump administration’s plan to lift the penalties.

The 57-42 Senate vote Wednesday was three short of the 60 needed to advance the Democrats’ resolution to a final vote. As a result, the Treasury Department likely will be able to move forward with its plan announced Dec. 19 to lift sanctions against three companies Deripaska controls -- United Co. Rusal, En+ Group Plc and EuroSibEnergo JSC.
Among those who voted for it: Mitt Romney, Richard Burr and Lindsay Graham.

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, who had warned as a presidential candidate in the 2012 election that Russia is the United States' top geopolitical foe, voted against Schumer's resolution.

A spokeswoman for Romney said his vote "was in line with longstanding U.S. policy and will help preserve our leverage to gain concessions from other bad actors. The senator expects the administration to reimpose sanctions if these companies don't comply."

Romney's vote follows a New Year's Day op-ed in which the former Massachusetts governor, who has been rumored to be mulling a 2020 primary challenge against Trump, signaled he was carving out an independent position from the president.

"Trump's words and actions have caused dismay around the world," Romney wrote in the Washington Post op-ed.

The primary objective met! Biggest winner!

Yep, Romney is as spineless as the rest of ‘em

It’s a crazy coincidence, isn’t it? People who investigate Putin or somehow challenge him end up in jail, shooting themselves in the back of the head, falling out of windows, or drinking contaminated tea. That’s just bad luck, IMO.

Seriously, that girl is probably being tortured all to hell right now.

I don't understand why people think Putin or Russians are involved in any of it. Too many tinfoil hatters out there. Coincidence. All of it.
