Goat's POLS Thread for Mature Adults

I hope you’re joking about your “wonder.” Those in that category are clearly afraid to be labeled as racists or misogynists or white nationalists were they to be discovered by their group thinking woke friends. Happening all over my social circles.

Speaking of white supremacists/nationalists...

I just saw a report on MSNBC about pro-Trump militia types showing up at the site in Detroit where the vote is being counted, and forcing themselves into the building and even in the room where the ballots are being counted. These are not actual GOP "poll watchers", but they seem to be the same type that were involved or sympathetic to the people who plotted to kidnap Whitmer. I know LEO's were reportedly on scene, but I don't have any additional details...

Before the broad brushes come out, I am against this kind of behavior.

In addition to that, my guess is that you can add some combination of (a) it's none of the media's damned business, (b) why should I give you information that is going to make the media money and I don't get a damned thing out of it, and (c) tactical support for the preferred candidate. If there's a dearth of information, then polls can't influence voting effectively.

I'm OK with this . . . it reflects my mindset about opinion pollsters . . . .
Agreed. I was asked at my polling place (because I dress interestingly when I vote) for an interview and I told them in so many words to piss off.

Biden might also have some rational, intelligent, thoughtful conversations with senators on the other side of the aisle and work out some compromises. Adults sometimes do that.

Doesn’t matter, Moscow Mitch will still in charge. He’s neither thoughtful nor rational. He’s a f***ing snake who’s only interest is power.

. . . maybe even beat Collins in ME with the 2nd choice vote in the ranked voting format.
I'm not sure what this means . . . the net/net result of yesterday's jungle election is that there will be a runoff in January between Kelly Loeffler (R) and Raphael Warnock (D), just those two. Collins is out of the race altogether, having been soundly beaten by both Loeffler and Warnock, plus he conceded and then endorsed Loeffler for the runoff.

Campaign finance will be interesting for this runoff race . . . Loeffler has deep pockets personally, and financed her campaign personally. Will she do that for the runoff too, or will she take Trumpette donations? How will Democrats react to having put so much money into getting Warnock to the runoff?

By my rough count, the votes for all Dem candidates totaled about 49%, and GOP votes totaled about 50% . . . with negligible, but potentially vital votes for other candidates not affiliated with either R or D. If the senate doesn't hang in the balance, Loeffler's personal money might be enough. If the senate hangs in the balance, look for a record haul for each candidate . . .

. . . and more campaign ads than I can stomach for the next two months. Our mail weight has dropped by 2/3 the last couple of days . . . .

If the senate doesn't flip but biden wins, a stalemate is better than what we have had the last 4 years. In 2 years, hopefully we can flip the senate and get some real progress then.

Biden can do some executive orders to undo some of Trump's damage and he can hang Obama's portrait at the white house lol. He should also be able to rejoin the paris climate agreement and get us back on the right track with environmental protections even if the senate remains GOP.

I have overwhelmingly have been calling for punishment in the republican party for letting Trump happen.

That being said, if you know me I've always voted dem president and republican congress.

That's because the naked stats going back decades is that the economy (and for me, the stock market) overwhelmingly favors a dem president and a republican congress.

It's loves gridlock. It loves having a business friendly legislative branch and it loves calm leadership (and the fact that most dem presidents have been young in nature and considered 'intelligent'. Biden admittingly doesn't fit that bill).

Why, because the market is about speculation and these two things have been the secret sauce of economic expansion.

So, again I want the pubs punished but if all I get is Trump out, a moderate dem president and a republican legislative branch....I can't complain.

That's why, I believe, the market popped today.

If Trump goes and we get past this virus soon....get into the market as much as you can.

Thank me when I die.

Was that description part of the initial report?

Besides, does it matter whether they're white nationalists or not? They should be arrested and prosecuted for interference with the election process. Their political ideologies can inform their choice of prison gangs . . . .

I often vote same as you - blue at top of ballot and completely red down.

But I’m getting real tired of the awfulness of the media and being left with terrible options at the top.

The OP called them white nationalists, I didn’t. And I agree with your “should be _____”.

I was going to say racist, but I went with the more sanitary version. Let's just say that I based my characterization of what I saw and heard on the video being broadcast live from the scene. The sight was essentially inner-city Detroit...

Right. So immediately they’re white guys supporting Trump and thus they’re racist. Perfect.

Go to Bed Bath and Beyond and buy a mirror. Gaze into it longingly and repeat “I am sooooo woke...and I am part of what’s created the Trumpublicans”

You mean like a guy like Biden that’s never had a real job? He just does it for the nookie, right?
Joe Biden was a young lawyer in Delaware who got involved in politics by running for a local council position. You don't think being an attorney is a real job? You do know that he's not from some political dynasty right. And he certainly wasn't born with a silver spoon up his ass like Trump...

The polls have been accurate for some time and in 2018, but when Donald Trump is on the ballot there's something about him and his followers that the pollsters can't account for.
I was thinking about this earlier (last night, what time is it) as Steve Kornacki was harping on Biden's performance relative to Beto in TX and Abrams in GA. Biden was slightly underperforming them relative to the margin. Further the 2018 "Blue Wave" seemed to show a shift dramatically to Dems in the House (at least). So, do the Republicans have a problem if Trump isn't at the top of the ticket? I can't imagine the pollsters didn't account for this but as Mark points out, there is a significant "Trump Bump" for Republican turnout when his name is at the top. Will those same people show up in the 2022 midterms or even in 2024 when the top of the ticket is somebody like Rubio?

The elevator talk tidbit that shocked me was that Biden and Trump are both older than Obama, Bush and Clinton.

Not when they took office. Right now.

A guy who took office in 1992 is younger than our current candidates.

Both parties need young, intelligent, energetic leaders to emerge desperately.

I can't conceive of a Rubio winning the GOP nomination . . . Trump eviscerated him too much in the 2016 primaries. He won't be able to generate the "alpha male" image that Trump supporters crave and respond to.

It seems Biden needs close to 70% of remaining votes to go in his favor in order to surpass Trump. It will be tough to pull that off. No matter who wins Georgia, it will be razor close. I'm not sure it makes a lot of difference in the presidential, but if the uncounted votes bring Perdue under 50%, that might be interesting.
Hey wait a minute! Wasn't someone on this board claiming Bloomberg's strategy sucked?

Well, what if it works?

Pretty sure I mentioned that my characterization was based on the interaction I saw occurring outside the building and what was being said by the people involved. Not sure you have to be "woke" to view somebody yelling racist insults at Black election workers/counters as racist...

As President, he could actually structure a nationwide approach to the Covid-19 problem.

He could also appoint a real attorney general, a real chief of staff, a real cabinet and a real national security advisor.

But he won't be able to add a bunch of Supreme Court Justices. He's probably just as happy not to have that pressure forced on him anyway.

Right, just positing the "all too early" possibility that the Republicans will return to their version of normalcy for 2024. If not, do we get JAVANKA?

One question I have is whether partisan justices like Thomas and Alito might signal the potential for them to retire in order to put SCOTUS appointments square on the ballot . . . .

If you forced me to guess today: Don Jr.

Maybe Franklin Graham?

No one has really known how to deal with Trump, who ignores all rational, statesmanlike behavior whatsoever. Marco is not the only one who has paid the price.

Trump's book describes his tactics to gain an advantage by creating chaos, changing his position randomly, retaliating against all critics, and advising that to be a good negotiator "you must be willing to walk away from the deal."

Nonetheless, even though I think Biden was a terrible campaigner, it's surprising to me that Biden's pretty much in an exact tie with the Mighty Trump.

Imagine that -- Bullyboy Trump failed to kick Sleepy Joe's ass. Trump failed and may ultimately lose to a guy he despises.

So we're down to Nevada . . . who'd a thunk that one?

Should have clarity on Arizona after tonight's mail dumps and Nevada tomorrow after their update, although there will be more to come that could matter if it's really close.

I keep getting down to that I think we need to make the POTUS salary a multi-million dollar salary. We’re not going to get top talent from industry or academia to run for office when they can earn far higher multiples in private industry. Why would anybody choose politics over financial security and wealth?
