DeSantis kicks Special Olympics ass

I’m dog sitting a 12 year old deaf and blind bulldog. Have to make vibrations to let her know I’m there so she doesn’t bite me. Then have to drag her outdoors! 😎

My little frenchie, who we found in the middle of the street, is deaf and blind in one eye. We're fairly certain he was beat when he was young because he's scared of any males that come around except for me. He's OLD now so unfortunately, I don't think he's going to be around much longer, which is gonna be tough, because he's been my buddy for the last nine years, always by my side. Definitely the best dog I've ever had. Really don't know if I want another once he's gone. He's such a pure soul and one of a kind. I'm dreading the day.

Oh my god!!!!! I can't imagine!!! That's old!

I understand and I don't like mandates. But if a business wants to do so they should be able to. What's more re the special Olympics you have a vulnerable group of athletes. It's DeSantis being spiteful and playing to an audience
Doesn't Special Olympics get government funding?

If they do, they're not a 'business'.

He strikes me as an angry little man with a Napoleon complex.

I think an argument can be made that he's even more vindictive than Trump. With Trump, it's always about him and everything is strictly personal. If someone goes after him personally, he'll retaliate times 10. DeSantis though, retaliates for expressions of free speech and he'll go after organizations (e.g. the Special Olympics) for policy positions that run counter to his rules. Disney embraces "woke" concepts? DeSantis retaliates. The Rays issue a public statement about gun violence and the need for legislative change? DeSantis vetoes $35 million in funding for a spring training facility, commenting that "it would be inappropriate to subsidize political activism of a private corporation." Special Olympics wants their athletes vaccinated? DeSantis threatens to fine them $27.5 million.

The guy's a little dictator.
You'd love him if he was a Democrat. You all love Executive Orders.

I think you are right, Special Olympics is a group voluntarily joined. They should be allowed to have their rules.

I think we are past the point of vaccines being game changers, the mutated versions are not being as effectively handled. I still think the vaccine is helpful, just not a game changer. But if a private group cannot set policy on this, what else can they not set policy on? I may not think a prayer is appropriate at school, but should the state have the right to tell the Indy 500 they cannot say the prayer before the race? I believe they have the right to say it, but if we are taking things to the individual rights level with vaccines, why not with prayer? I suspect there is an attendee somewhere who feels their religion is violated by that prayer.
I'd agree with you if they didn't take taxpayer dollars.

But they do, so they are subject to the law.

What exactly is "Government" about the Special Olympics? For someone who claims to be about the First Amendment, DeSantis sure does do a lot of throwing his governmental weight around when trying to regulate private businesses that express a viewpoint he's opposed to...

I worked in the field for the past 16 yrs, and no one involved in Special Olympics or working with people with disabilities consider the GOP as friends. Daniels cut the social services budget when he was Governor of Indiana which resulted in people losing some of their Medicaid allotments and programs being cut. Now here's DeSantis playing to the idiot fringe and further endangering people who are already far much vulnerable to infection than the population as a whole. Obviously based on your post, he's reached his target audience...
Receiving taxpayer money makes the 'Government'. Duh!

Governor Overreach is getting plenty of well-deserved blowback for both his rhetoric and some of the laws that he's pushed through. His path to the Oval Office will not be nearly as smooth as you suggest.

Even the 11th Circuit recently declared that he went too far with respect to 2021 legislation that was intended to punish social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook for what DeSantis argued was the stifling of conservative thought. The court found the law to be an unconstitutional violation of the First Amendment. "Put simply, with minor exceptions, the government can't tell a private person or entity what to say or how to say it," said Circuit Judge Kevin Newsom, an appointee of Trump, in the opinion. "We hold that it is substantially likely that social media companies — even the biggest ones — are private actors whose rights the First Amendment protects."

More recently, he's retaliated against the Tampa Bay Rays for issuing a statement against gun violence and calling for legislative change. DeSantis characterized that speech, which is pretty vanilla and aligns with the sentiments of the majority of Americans, as "political activism." Guy is scary controlling and vindictive.
Restoring sanity is always scary to the woke crowd.

My first few days on Wissler 3 I remember REO Ridin the Storm Out booming from the room across the hall and the smell of pot slipping out from under the door. The boy from little ole Odon Indiana knew he wasn’t in Kansas anymore. 😂
You were on WIII? What year(s)?

Nothing wrong with Kansas. Lol. Actually love their music. Weeks after figuring out I wasn’t in Kansas anymore, I was talking smack while playing basketball at the Hyper Building. The guy I was throwing in bombs on didn’t appreciate my mouth. One punch and I was out like a light. No more chirping while playing basketball and a reminder I wasn’t in Kansas anymore. 😂

Our community gets a bad rap sometimes for puppy mills. Most of the Amish breeding dogs treat the dogs like members of the family. In the early days many years ago, one guy got caught in a PETA Sting. The video went viral for awhile and gave the Amish a bad name.

I know. And that's hard too. I'm obsessed with English Bulldogs and have had four. They should have never been bred to look like they do. I contribute to the problem. I'll never forget I went to the bulldog rescue in Miami and I was looking around as my best friend called. I told him where I was and when he asked if I was going to rescue one I told him no "they look all f*ucked up." Lol. You aren't going to get a good line there and I want(ed) it to look just right lol. Ugh. But we also always do rescues of "regular" dogs too. I will always have dogs, even tho they are a pain.

We've rescued a ton of bunnies too. They are miserable pets. Balls of shit everywhere.
At least when you realize the bunny is a mistake you can make stew.

I keed!
I keed!

Ranger mentioned we will all get it, which is true. But a story.

My youngest's husband has it now. We are supposed to have a family get together next Sunday, my youngest is worried she might get it and spread it to us. I want to tell her we are all going to get it and not worry. But I also know this, if she gives it to me or my wife and we get very ill or die, she WILL blame herself.

I suspect that, along 2ith any potential lawsuit, plays a role. The people running SO want the events to be what they are remembered for, not " 3 people died in an outbreak related to...".
