They were called Dixiecrats, and they flipped over to the republican side as the democrats became more liberal and progressive while the republicans welcomed Goldwater (who begat Reagan) as a move to a far right conservative.
Which is really the trick that those that point to Lincoln and say he's a republican.
The real distinction is progressive/liberal vs conservative.
Lincoln wasn't a conservative, especially for the time that he lived. Hell it cost him his life.
The GOP isn't the party of Lincoln any more than the modern Dems are the party of Jefferson. We've long moved past what the parties used to be.

That's of course, not true. If you bothered to pay attention over the years, I've gotten more than my fair share of shit for calling out liberals who crossed lines. But acknowledging that would damage your narrative, so go on believing what you want to believe.

FWIW, I've had any number of posts deleted, most without comment, and I'm pretty sure Goat was behind most of them.
Well, in this very thread (or in one of the other active ones tonight), I pointed out that Plax was just as bad as DANC, just liberal.
I also got a ton of shit for going after liberals who were attacking Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Ivanka, and Melania for their looks and sexuality, which I find reprehensible.
To be fair, if it was without comment, it was probably Jim or NPT. If you got a comment saying "stop being a dick," it was probably me.
I 'experience' you as a moderator every time I'm on the forum and see the double standard.

A whole lot do. I have spent the entire internet era on Civil War internet discussion boards, attending Civil War events, touring Civil War battlefields. Two things are abundantly clear 1) Southerners are far more vocal about their history 2) those that do feel a need to lessen great great grandpappy's sins.
And I grew up in a neighborhood in Indiana where George Wallace had a lot of support. Many of those people are still around, in Indiana and especially across the south.

No, they don't think it is as big of a deal NOW that many on the left do. There are a significant number on one side of the aisle that views everything through that lense and the other side says, "it happened, it is a stain, it was terrible, but if you are someone whose ancestors went through that it has minimal impact on your ability to succeed today".
