All this whining and moaning about "well, what spending would YOU cut" is answered here. It's all in the bill, passed by Republicans (and absent Democrats).

I especially like the cuts to law enforcement and to veteran medical care. And teachers. That will show those dumbocrats!!
Back the blue you know. It’s a great slogan until you actually have to mean it.

GOP
"We would like to reduce discretionary spending to what it was in 2022 (literally 1 year ago) and then set the rate of growth at x% for the next 10 years."

Democrats
"Why do you hate children, the military, the police, and your own grandmother?"
You all are children at the adult's table.

Congratulations on actually putting a plan out there, regardless of how bad it could be.

Normally you guys just talk hot air, do nothing and wait for the Dems to do the real work to lay it out there for you to bitch about how terrible it is.

So I appreciate you guys actually putting a starting financial proposal together for once.

What's not accurate?

Anyway, this bill obviously won't become law. But it's a win that McCarthy needed to show he is able to push a bill through the house, something that wasn't at all clear was possible.
Yes, and McCarthy is praying, PRAYING, this dog doesn't catch teh car.

That's not accurate, and you know it.
"McCarthy’s bill, dubbed the Limit, Save, Grow Act, would lift the federal borrowing limit by $1.5 trillion or through March 31, whichever comes first. It would cut federal discretionary spending to fiscal 2022 levels and impose a 1% growth cap, and it would recapture unspent Covid relief funds, kill Biden’s student debt cancellation plan, rescind IRS enforcement funding and add new work requirements for able-bodied adult recipients of federal programs like Medicaid."

Awfully darn close.

No, it's not awfully darn close. You left out all of the most objectionable parts.

Crazy purposefully left off all of the crazy riders that no Dem would vote for.

I think this might be the year we actually have a default.

Have we ever had a bargaining process where the debt ceiling was used as leverage before....I certainly don't remember it at all with previous administrations.

Maybe we've entered new territory where it's accepted that everything is a transactional bargaining chip....like FEMA funds/disaster relief, etc.

None of this is crazy. Sorry.

When did using the debt ceiling, otherwise not paying our current debts, become a bargaining negotiation?

Isn't that Homer Simpson logic?

'Flanders remember when you let me borrow your lawn mower and a gave it back? Well now you owe me!'

Even Trump understood you don't mess with it.

“I can’t imagine anybody ever even thinking of using the debt ceiling as a negotiating wedge.”

“It’s a very, very sacred thing in our country, the debt ceiling. We can never play with it.”

—Donald Trump in 2019

But I do appreciate you letting us know, in writing where you are eyeballing your desired cuts right before a presidential election.

What are the crazy riders?

Also, we're not defaulting. Republicans enjoy spending tax payers money, as well. You're all socialists in my opinion:)

Debt ceiling increases should never be tied to anything else.
Disagree. We are at $31T and counting. I think debt ceiling increases should be tied to spending discussions. A growing portion of our spending is related to servicing that very debt. Both parties have been extremely guilty of spending like drunken sailors on shore leave. I support anything that forces the discussion.

I think your kind of irresponsible thinking is going to destroy the American economy.

I have no problem with discussing the budget. Holding the nation's credit hostage to force that discussion is madness.

Right, this is money already spent. This is like telling the credit card company, "I don't like my budget so I am not going to only pay you for what I have already charged until I stop charging more". I think all our banks would have very strong opinions on any of us doing that.

Oh yeah the party of Trump is most definitely the adult table. Try again.

No, what it's like is telling your spouse you're not going to pay any more of the bills he/she ran up and will declare bankruptcy unless their spending is cut.

It works.

only the totally irresponsible and totally corrupt would look at only expenditures, and not revenues just as much or more.

when we had surpluses instead of deficits, it was the revenue side more so than the expenditure side, that accounted for said surpluses.

when govt represents only corps, the mega rich, and the investor class, at the expense of the working class and best interests of the country and citizenry as a whole, this is what we get.

the answer is in changing who govt does and doesn't represent.

the corps, mega rich, and investor class, will always see ever increasing deficits as maxing out their best interests.

thus ever increasing deficits is what we've gotten, and what we will keep getting.

it's not personal. just business.

You have done it?

Refusing to pay your bills is wrong, and may violate the Constitution.

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.

Yep. Wife was piling up bills like there was no end. Our credit cards were getting out of control - we were making minimum payments on them because we had so many and the amounts on the cards were huge. Actually had the electricity turned off a couple of times - and we were living in a very nice home on the lake. It was embarrassing.

I told her she had 2 choices - we go to a Dave Ramsey class and learn to manage debt or I would quit paying the cards and declare bankruptcy.

Guess what she chose?

I don't think Biden - or anyone - has the balls to do it, but if I were President, I'd use your argument to order the Treasury to keep borrowing past the debt ceiling if necessary, and during the inevitable lawsuit, I'd argue that the debt ceiling is, in fact, unconstitutional.

You default on your debt, and you can pay some late fees and work back from it. I shudder to imagine what will happen if the nation defaults on its debt.
