Why I say "Happy Holidays" and not "Merry Christmas"

Last I checked....Christmas is a national holiday in the US (unlike Easter, which is a much more important Christian holiday).
That would be correct.

2018 Holiday Schedule
Date Holiday
Monday, January 1 New Year’s Day
Monday, January 15 Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Monday, February 19* Washington’s Birthday
Monday, May 28 Memorial Day
Wednesday, July 4 Independence Day
Monday, September 3 Labor Day
Monday, October 8 Columbus Day
Monday, November 12** Veterans Day
Thursday, November 22 Thanksgiving Day
Tuesday, December 25 Christmas Day

An elegant argument in favor of the US being a Christian nation since Christmas is the only federal Holy Day.

The author of the article referred to Christmas being the dominant cultural holiday here in the US. Which it is.

I assume Hanukkah would be the same in Israel.
My understanding (BICBW) is that Hanukkah is a relatively minor holiday for Jews. It's only its coincidence with Christmas that makes it as well known as it is among us gentiles.

You have that backwards. Secular Jews have blown up Hanukkah, despite its minor significance, in an effort to make their kids not feel alienated during Christmas time.
