was Devries wrong in not recruiting some of our current players?

I've heard the same about coaches and staff from above the coach, too much bad mojo. Tucker is the odd one, wondering if the chatter about him telling this staff what he thought about them is keeping him in the mix.
Now if him “blowing up” means he told the coaches and the rest of the team that they need to “play/work as a team”, and Woodson thought he was trying to be the coach, then I’m all for a player like that.
We know what happened to Fife when he
“overstepped” his coaching duties.

looking like the only player he's bringing with him is his son. I think pope and Kelsey brought several players and or recruits to uk and uofl. hope we don't end up overpaying for Coleman Hawkins types.

this situation was a little unique. woodson knew he was gone a month ago. so did the players. the way it went down, I can see why all the players split and why CDD didn't try and stop then (I suppose). Or maybe he did? Do we know?

this year wasn't great but at least had meaningful games and should have made the tournament. do you want to watch a 9-22 team next year
We basically recruited a whole new roster this past year with a terrible coach and won 19 games.
I’ll take my chances with a good coach that can recruit some shooters, not highly rated guys with no coach an no chemistry.

Are you suggesting Woodson worked to convince all the players to leave, to create a more difficult situation for the new coach?

Galloway, Leal, Reneau, Mgbako, Cupps…we returned quite a lot, actually.

right, Carlyse was a huge miss or terribly coached, Woodson just needed to plug some holes last off season. so many good 2 guards were available last year. Ballo done well for us last year, but he was kind of redundant with Reneau. a 6 9 bouncy 4 player like the sec teams have would have been a better pick up

If the process is similar to football, the assistants stay on the job until the new staff is hired. CDD has watched video of games and practices as well as getting feedback on the players from the staff. it is hard to say how many he tried to retain or who he already thinks will be coming with him.

Remember that IUFB replaced the QB, running backs and all the starting receivers and a good part of the defense with portal players and were immediately successful after a slightly slow start. Cignetti showed you can bring in productive players from non P4 programs and get similar production. Not that CDD needs any advice, but I kinda hope he has had a few lunches with Cignetti to share portal stories.

I really hope Devries can evaluate talent. I can't think of a player for arch or Woodson who played above their star ranking. Crean had several of those types.

We did return those players but EVERYONE on this board knew that if 2 of those 5 players were starters we were in serious trouble.

And if Cupps was getting minutes things derailed. So when you do the math, we didn’t really return anything of real substance.
in today's world returning 3 starters is a lot

results were the opposite, thats the best we played all year
You're not competing for anything more than a bubble spot, here.

Those two were the beneficiaries of Woody having to play small. It's like me getting to play with MJ, Pippen, Rodman and Grant. Then you playing with Paxson, Carteright, Harper amd King--then me proclaim, 'Bulls were better when I was in the line up..

The entire point is...you're not winning anything with a starting backcourt of Leal and Gallo.

agree with that, and after watching these games tonight we will never compete for shit until we get way more athletic than we have been the last few years.

Agree 100%..

Shit man, I watched UAB vs UC Irvine and thought-- these teams would beat us. Had such better athletes.

I feel DD knows this.

So how was Devries wrong not recruiting them back?
I don't know, I get attached to these guys and want to see them improve and do well for Indiana. and I guarantee you he's not going to be able to put a roster like Arkansas together year 1.

I would have tried and brought Rice and Reneau and MM back, I think those 3 could contribute on a top level big 10 team, under the right circumstances.

I would of kept Tucker and Rice remember when Crean got rid of everybody this reminds me if this. I hope he can fill a talented roster if not and these guys go and become great players DeVries will have a up hill battle.

It’s like marcellous wallace said … if you were gonna do it, you would have done it by now.

No. lol

These players are fond of Mike and he got the boot over a month ago. Makes sense a bunch wouldn't stick around, if any. I doubt many thought "I can't wait to see who our new coach is!"

This is the same argument from last February. Last season, before we ended with the 5(?) game late winning streak. Remember the rumors? Woody on his way out, everyone leaving (people even thought Gallo might leave). And maybe they were and just came back after more money was offered, but the point remains….

Some here (me included), said good riddance. Flush it all down the toilet. Get rid of it all and hopefully change the program, change the culture, who cares what that means for next years record.

Then there were some that said, no, no, no…if we can just keep as much as possible and add this and that, why I can see us as competing for a B10 title!

Now, I’m not saying that next year we can’t have a very good record with a totally new roster, because we can. No, what I’m saying is that I appreciate the recognition (if my perception is correct) by Coach D that he needed to clean house. Hopefully what that means is that he is trying to build something and felt that the existing foundation and culture of the program needed to be vaporized.

Note:

1. I do have my concerns about the challenges of building something in the era of NIL and the portal.

2. I do have concerns that changing the culture (and program model) requires more than changing coaches and players. Hopefully he can pull it off.

Athletic, true that. But the teams still playing are shooting it lights out. The skill is missing as well. Playing out of position, no hustle, can't shoot. IU needs complete basketball players. Thats what we are seeing this week in the tournament....complete players.

He knows best what he wants but I lean toward throw out the baby and the bathwater and start fresh.

Crean was walking into a situation that was nearly like a NCAA death penalty. There was no portal. No NIL. There roster make-up were guys like Finklemeier, Matt Roth, Devan Dumas, Kory Barnett. That team had 9 true freshmen on it, many of them from Midwest schools that weren’t recruited by any Big 10 program.
Cleaning house in today’s free agency world is nothing like it was 17 years ago.

Some teams that did well this year had nearly all new teams. Arkansas for one, who made the sweet 16 and lost a close one for final eight.

The new normal when changing coaches. The portal is available for players and coaches. Many schools had significant exodus last year and it looks like this year. And that even includes schools who had good years and didn't even change coaches.
