Nativism, to me, is a positive. I’m proud of where I live and what its values stand for. Maybe now I’m implying, but it seems you don’t hold these same values and look down upon those that do. Or, just maybe you don’t quite understand what those foundational values are?

It’s nice to have on in the background while I’m working. There are only a few players that would make me want to watch a full round though.

But (a) there are no towns with a bunch of Swedish immigrants, and (b) for the most part, the primary arteries of American culture and European culture are (not coincidentally) pretty similar.

We have a tendency to look at a lot of contentious matters as being driven by race, ethnicity, or nationality…when really they’re about culture.

I’m not saying that to defend the bizarre cat-eating hysteria. I’m saying it because Haitian culture, unlike European culture, is so foreign to most Americans that it becomes fertile ground for dullards to fill in those blanks with concocted myths about strange customs, rituals, cuisines, etc.

I’ve heard stories about people from foreign lands eating animals we consider pets my entire life. Imagine somebody saying it in Donnie Baker’s voice and I bet you’ll recognize it from your life experiences too.

Well, the vast majority of contemporary migrants in the US have dark skin. But, by and large, most Americans (of all races) have at least a slight familiarity with the more common Hispanic cultures. Nobody is making up ghost stories about, say, Cubans in south Florida.

But Haitian culture is something of a mystery to Americans of all races…which makes it ripe for those ghost stories.

Go back and watch popular media from the 40s - particularly those depicting Japanese people. It’s chock full of caricatures, tropes, and stereotypes. It wasn’t because of their skin tones or other physical characteristics…it was that their culture was so foreign to us. And we weren’t all that accustomed at the time to engaging it.

Isn't that xenophobia, we do not understand a people or culture so we fear it?

In early America that would have been the Germans, Italians, and Irish. Eventually enough were here that over time Americans felt comfortable enough to stop fearing.
