I've said this before, and probably rightfully so its been laughed at... he'd be a good President.

I know his political stances, I know that probably triggers many on this board...but his answer to a question about a DJT 2nd term, is the first thing I've heard, from anyone, in a while, that has made me "feel better" about the election and the next four years...insert Biden's name in the question, and its still a great answer...for the setting, and for today.

I honestly wish he and The Rock would have run. After the laughs and absurdity of that thought fade away...the reality of the choice we're actually faced with comes back in to focus...I'd 100% prefer them over what we're facing. And Hanks answer this morning, and how he answered it, is an example of why. It was flowery, poetic, and very apple pie...but damn it, I miss hearing answers like that.

It's a great answer and one of the reasons all this catastrophizing is ridiculous: federalism. We have devolved power in this country. Trump isn't going to--cannot-end that. He isn't smart enough or powerful enough and his supporters would not support it. It would require an all out civil war.

And the notion Amanpour puts forth, that Trump would end all that the D-Day casualties died for, is ridiculous hyperbole. How does a journalist ask that question?

Re Hanks running, I like his moderating temperament and interest in history and clear love of our nation. And he's got enough money and fame that he shouldn't be corruptible. That might be what we need and light years ahead of what we've had recently. But it's odd to pine for a college dropout and career entertainer to be the leader of the free world. Kinda worked before, I guess? I'd vote for him this year.

Yeah...and again, it should be an absurd notion. But honestly...if he approached his time in the same manner he approaches an acting role... he could probably be pretty darn successful. This "role" is a blend of Lincoln, FDR, Kennedy, Reagan, GW, Obama... Study them, take all their best traits, study how they appointed themselves in times of crisis, how they led and communicated...

Hell...just dust off your role as Captain Miller, and be that guy for the next 4-8 years, and our country will be in a much better place as a result.

Regarding Amanpour's questioning... Worrying about Trump doing what he says he wants to do on a "retribution term" is not crazy.

A second Trump administration will not have guardrails. It is going to lack anyone with any level of disloyalty to Trump at all. Nobody to tell him not to nuke the hurricane, drink the bleach, jail political rivals, etc.

When journalist stop reporting what happened and start theorizing on what could happen they stop being journalist.

We have very few actual journalist left in this country. Just reporting facts of what happened doesn't pay enough evidently.

I am less optimistic than Chet Haze's father. Regardless, I am not sure what elected government and Donald Trump's supposed antipathy towards it has to do with D-Day. Elected government doesn't prevent moral decay.

I am reminded of Reagan's 40th anniversary speech "Where did we find such men?". Does anyone earnestly believe we have the same readily available pool of men to select from were a new D-Day effort required tomorrow?

The truth is the members of the "greatest generation" were great because they were first raised well. There is no such thing as a great generation that's not made up of good people. People raised in the churchgoing communities and nuclear families that inculcate the values required to participate in a D-Day. If anyone thinks that ensuing generations have been raised as well I would be interested to hear why.

As we remember their bravery today let's also remember that a growing number of people including our current President have a different definition of bravery. One that's emblematic of the moral decay I mention. Once we complete our requisite 24-36 hours of remembrance we can get back to celebrating who this month is truly meant for, those participating in PRIDE.

After all, according to President Biden "Trans kids are the bravest people I have ever met"

... and his supporters would not support it...
His supporters would support anything that Trump does. That has been proven over and over and over again.

Whether or not Trump could be successful in destroying democracy is hopefully a long shot but I don't think it's quite as long a shot as some want to pretend to help them sleep at night.

What would have happened in 2020 if Trump had a VP that was more of a yes man than Pence? I have no doubt that Trump will be more careful in his selection of VP this time around to fix that safeguard in his favor. I don't know how many other safeguards would need to fail before we are looking at a dictator but I don't understand why any sane person would want to give Trump another attempt regardless of how unlikely they think it is for him to succeed.

Read Project 25. It's not just Trump's incompetence we need to worry about. He's just a useful idiot for religious weirdos and authoritarian whack jobs.

IF Trump gets a second term, the Dem's insane TDS will be a far larger threat to the nation than anything Trump would do.

Hanks believes that consistent with the stock phrase in our constitution about our democracy achieving a perfect union we will, over the long run, satisfy our aspirations.

This achievement according to Hanks will result due to our people being basically good and also being able to find the truth.

Hanks conveniently ducks the current fears about either a Trump or Biden victory. He conveniently goes to the unknown. The unknown being that in the long run we can overcome the current short run fears of going in the wrong direction.

In listening to Hanks, I almost forgot we are a bunch of hopelessly divided crazies :) along with wondering if this is the new norm.

All of those things are probably true...

He also had enough tact to not answer that question how the reporter was probably hoping he would answer it. Awareness, tact, statesmanship, historical knowledge...it sucks these traits have become aspirational instead of expected. It sucks that answer impressed me as much as it did.

Re the bolded, I don't think so. I think his phrasing suggests he recognizes that's an aspirational goal that will not--cannot--be achieved. But it's still worth striving for.

We are striving to be a "more perfect nation". We can achieve that goal without getting to perfection. Just course correcting now and then when things appear to be moving in the opposite direction.

That generation's ability to fight the way they did had a hell of a lot more to do with than just them being raised in the nuclear family, I think. Read VDH. The West's devolution of power and training, for example, made D-Day's success possible, despite the screw ups.

Plus, how many nations out there have non-nuclear families? The Muslim nations all do, yet they have been terrible fighters for at least 100 years. And they've been raised, for the most part, to be moral, god-fearing people, too.

Cool story, Spielberg..

The good ole days when men were men and sheep were nervous and sore.
If there were ever an example of lack of family and Christianity leading to shitty people….

Tom Hanks seems like a very genuine person and extremely likable. It was good answer. I’m actually extreme bullish on the future of humanity as we usher in the Bitcoin standard. It might be a little rocky as governments continue to spend recklessly, but we will eventually separate money from state and you’ll see unprecedented increases in living standards and humanity overall.

Christianity and Islam aren’t the same. One is better than the other. Just like IU and Purdue. Just like capitalism and socialism. Just like sound money and fiat currencies.

The followers of Jupiter were undefeated against the followers of Yahweh, FWIW. That the same God?

The German army had" God is with us" on all their belt buckles. Germany had banned jazz as a part of moral decay, something a lot of Americans also believed and it was called "The Devil's Music".

I really don't know how we can measure belief and morality and military success. I cannot believe any country captured by Germany was less moral.

Eighty Years' War, Thirty Years' War, War for the Spanish Succession, etc. Not undefeated by any means, but the Protestants have held their own pretty well. Much better than the Catholics did with those temporary victories in their silly Crusades.

WW 1 Germany also probably better for its time than WW 2 Germany. I think Carlin argued this point one time.
Also, how does a list like that not have the Grande Armee? What Napoleon accomplished militarily was far more impressive than what Hitler did, wasn't it? And it took seven alliances made up of virtually everyone else to finally put him down.

Hmm, I can see some arguments, but pound for pound I’m not sure bc of the technological edge in WW2 vs WW1. I’m not an expert and admit there were fewer men and less seasoned men bc of the prior war, but Germany dominated the war until weather bailed Russia out.
