I’m old enough to remember the days of Kathy Ireland and a Rebecca Romijn.

we’re a nation with an obesity epidemic and we’re celebrating obesity for wokeness’ sake. Our healthcare costs are mathematically higher by a significant amount because of our obesity rate.

Oh, and of course I would. But that isn’t the point.

is that lucy?

so applauding and encouraging that lifestyle is going to improve things?
Not on obesity, the hope is it will improve eating disorders. Teen girls have a high significant percentage of eating disorders. 2.7% overall, but much higher among girls. If shame does not lead to lower obesity rates, maybe ending it will lead to lower rates of eating disorders. Or maybe drug use, Bertinelli said she took cocaine in her youth because it kept her thin.

It just isn't fat girls that have body issues, some are thin, some are athletic build. They have an irrational fear of being fat. Karen Carpenter was never obese, though as a teen she was overweight. Somewhere her mind decided starving to death was preferable to overweight.

if media reflects a society, what’s the real issue here? We can’t jog very far, or even touch our toes, but this is who we are. Lol

Gross.

So American consumers aren't to blame for being obese, nor are the Mondelez's of the world...it is a woke issue?
My wife works in a low income school, so the kids receive blessings in a backpack. I asked what they get now, she says it was things like pb and bread, now it is literally slim jims and cheetos. Are they helping or hurting, honest question?
FWIW, i would let Yumi sit on my face.....you would have to pay $20 to watch

lol out at your last line.

I do agree that consumers are responsible, as are the sugar and processed foods industries.

And Pb isn’t allowed in schools any longer bc of the allergy fears. So is your wife lying to you?

eating disorders are certainly a problem. But compare the percentage of the population affected by those (2.7% in your example) vs those suffering from obesity. It’s not even close. And yes, ED has more short-term risks, but both have considerable long term risks and more importantly, societal costs.

That woman is objectively beautiful. But she’s not healthy and that’s the problem. Not my problem - her problem.
It’s all relative. You can find tons of more attractive women on Instagram that are healthy.

but the biggest issue with your statement is that it’s not her problem. It’s our problem. Obesity is one of the primary factors of our runaway healthcare costs.

ED may have short term risks and societal costs, but i'm certain there are many both short and long term benefits. I guarantee you over the course of an adult life men with ED have more money. are promoted more often. start and run more successful businesses. pursue more hobbies. spend more time with friends. drink less. read more. on and on

Huh?

Well, at least we aren't the only country where obesity is progressing according to this article.

As we search for solutions at home, it’s worth noting that the obesity epidemic has leaped from our shores to the developed and even the developing world. Among OECD countries, Mexico has the second-highest rate of obesity (after the U.S.), followed closely by New Zealand and Hungary. Obesity is also on the rise in middle-income and poor countries: China, India, and Brazil are grappling with the epidemic.

There are millions of obese women in the country. There are also millions of obese men. It's much more of a stigma for women, though. Exponentially more women than men have body image issues and eating disorders. Eating disorders among American girls and women is reportedly at staggering levels and became even worse during the pandemic. I've seen multiple instances in my own extended family.

While you're apparently jarred by it, an obese woman on the cover of a magazine should not be that big of a deal. On the other hand, if the cover helps prevent just one girl or young woman from getting sick or dying from an eating disorder, or from taking her own life because she hates herself for being fat, then SI has done a real public service.

Do you have young daughters? If so, you may want to rethink your approach.

I am not disagreeing about obesity, I am suggesting the evidence is not in that fat shaming stops people from becoming obese. Maybe it does, but we won't know without some way of testing. If removing fat shaming does not change the obesity rate but does change the rate of eating disorders, might we have success?

We know that obesity has held steady for several years, but it has declined among kids 2-5. Maybe we are starting to see progress:

Here was an interesting stat from the CDC:

  • In 2011-2014, among children and adolescents aged 2-19 years, the prevalence of obesity decreased as the head of household’s level of education increased.

Can’t “dysfunction” mean things like irrational, inappropriate, and inopportune boners (like when you’re hugging grandma)?

Asking for a friend.
Speaking of grandma, have you seen the Maye Musk images from the alternate cover? I don’t know what to think….
