The Music Thread

Remember when we only had 3 or 4 tv channels and the Smothers Brothers actually presented relevant musical guests? Judy Collins performing "Someday Soon", The Beatles doing "Let It Be", and this 1967 performance of My Generation...

Tommy is his usual goofy self, although he did seem to have good taste. But what made this appearance notable, is that unbeknownst to everyone else (esp Pete) a disgruntled stage hand had set Moonie's kick drum with 3x the amount of explosive they normally used in the days when they blew everything up.

Pete was unaware and was so close that the explosion shattered his ear drum. I saw an old Letterman where he basically said that all of the deafness issues he's had over the years date back to that night...

Paul Simon has written some incredible songs. This has got to be in my Top 5...

Unpopular opinion: I am not a fan of Keith moon’s drumming…..even if I get that it’s a big part of The Who sound. Probably explains why I’m not a huge fan of most of their music.
What, a drummer that can't keep time, a bassist who doesn't do his job and plays all over the fretboard, a novice level guitarist and an over-singer all posing as virtuosos and then literally posing, isn't your thing? lol ... me either.

They were so off live they basically invented punk. Not on purpose, just by butchering time... It's one of my favorite bands to pick on, because it's so easy.

Pete was a great songwriter though, decent arranger, but they weren't what they were posing as... well they were posers, literally, but you get what I mean, musically ..

But look I can do this ...

I would kill a person that did this shit on stage.

If you had a rising 6 grader who had to pick an instrument what would it be. We've done violin and piano so far. I want her involved in music

In my opinion, always start with drums. Time and beat is the base DNA of all music. I started both my kids out on drums.

I am glad I am not a music expert. It sounds like a guy watching Rick Barry shoot free throws and complaining he shoots them wrong. "But they go in." "I don't care, it is wrong."

I like their sound, more than the Stones and less than the Beatles. There are times I want to say more than the Beatles because of Revolution #9. That song is bad, getting picked off first one run behind in the bottom of the ninth of world series game 7 with two out and a 3-0 count on the batter bad. Frankly it is worse but there is no sports metaphor bad enough.

Like a lot of bands it's been cleaned up in the studio. Stones were also barely functional. Beatles though were the very rare pros among rock bands. I'm a Stones> Zep> Beatles > Who... kind of person. Zep was also known to be horrendous live.

I don't hate them or anything, I just like picking on them.. The Who, Eddie Van Halen, Lindsey Buckingham, Metallica, Mumford and Sons and Red Hot Chili Peppers all do things that are just easy to laugh at .. and pick on.

I also enjoy making fun of Phish's lyrics, as we all should. Great sounding band... really really dumb lyrics.

Get an electronic kit. She can play with headphones on so you'll both be happy.

And have her learn to play music, not learn to play an instrument. When she learns to play music, she'll easily be able to pick up any instrument and play it relatively quickly.
That’s just what a guy who owns Alesis would say

The songwriting is so good I guess I missed all the rest. Ha-ha!

Perfect. She's doing theatre this summer as well. Crazy how you never know what will appeal to your kids. Big personality. Super confident. Shockingly bad athlete
On the shockingly bad athlete part, my wife and I love to bag on actors who.just.can’t.run. Some are so bad. Like stick figures. It’s embarrassing.

Generally agree though I don’t think they’ve ever taken themselves too seriously. Also trey shouldn’t sing. Jerry figured out having someone else do the heavy lifting on vocals made a hell of a lot of sense. And it was still always Jerry’s band.

Still having problems getting into a lot of the 3.0 sound. Some of its great. Some is boring. Trey off opioids has had an effect on their sound. Sometimes good as he’s not wasted and drooling on himself. But 95-03 was amazing.

Tried to be a fan of The Who but it’s just not for me. Same thing with John Mulaney. People love him and he’s good but just not for me.

No one can tell you what to like. It's purely subjective to personal taste. That doesn't mean what someone likes is good or what they dislike is bad...

Proficiency of the artist or the music, that's a completely different conversation and like any skill or craft, based on knowledge and ability and not purely opinion.

I like a lot of Who musically, I don't think much of it artistically, except for Pete's songwriting because they really don't have much going for them. The past hype surrounding their artistic ability is pure bullshit....

I also lmao when I've watched them perform and do the posing stuff they do, so at least they're entertaining. Like a mime. lol....

It's a creativity steroid .. that comes with too high a price. So many great songs written by junkies ....

I just ignore the words and pretend it's just another instrument making sounds that don't have any literary meaning or importance..

Which is basically what they do when writing. lol ...

I mean he chose life. Probably the right move, you know, in the long run.
