I have reminisced here in the past about "headphone music." These were the songs that were so powerful and meaningful, that my dad believed you could only appreciate them by listening through the big ol' earmuff headphones. We only had one set, so we had to take turns. One album we always played twice so we could both get a turn at every song was Buffalo Springfield. Another one was 4-Way Street.
My first really serious concert and 1st trip to Assembly Hall was as a senior in high school to see Stills/Manassas.
Anyone who has never heard this debut album (or the follow up) truly has no idea what they're missing. 4 or more distinctive styles/flavors incorporated into one double album... Stellar guitar work, amazing vocals and harmonies- I've heard it referred to as CSN (Y) meets the Burrito Brothers...
Hard to listen to this and not move with the music...So much going on instrumentally and vocally...
As far as I can tell
The only game in town
Is a going down
And only happening right now
The Kid with the Big White Guitar works his magic...
If you ever saw the Peter Seller's movie "Being There", Sellers based his role on the experiences of his gardener (Johnny). Later he sold the house to Ringo, and then Stills bought it from Ringo. He also inherited the same Gardner that Sellers based the movie role on, and Stills wrote the song Johnny's Garden about the house he briefly owned...
Only time I can ever remember the term "frag" being used in a song. Vietnam era slang for soldiers throwing a grenade at their own officers, often while the officer was in the latrine...Anti war and anti-violence...
Used to be down to tear gas and clubs
What do you think about grenades
(You know like a frag)
Nonsense is as
Nonsense does
The judge's eagle promenades
Another song about Judy, So Begins The Task was written during the Deja Vu sessions, but didn't make the cut. Incredible vocal work from Stills ,and tasty pedal steel that may have been Jerry Garcia. Another fantastic Stills song...
