The Music Thread

I saw these guys tonight at Conner Prairie, well, the one original and some substitutes. A buddy was talking about the Four Tops touring with no original members. When does a band become a tribute band?

This is where my handle comes from - Neil.

I wondered about that... I heard a (not great) cover of this by Elvis C the other day, and it reminded me how with the other classics on this album the title cut sometimes gets overlooked...

And speaking of Elvis... Remember when he was the "cool nerd" in the high tops? Still my favorite Elvis song...

A pretty good Elvis cover of another brilliant, underrated gem off of a pretty underrated album...

Everything is better without Roger Waters and especially if you replace him with a cello and a stand up.

Are we even allowed to like that song now? I'm not sure about the rules.
I see no reason to. Impressive sure but not in any manner that means anything.. its like doing a killer crossover 88' from the basket with no one guarding you.

Damn the rules ...

In response, I was all set up to post the original, but then I was like, "Meh, will my Cancel Culture overlords get pissed at me?"

It was impressive in the same way that any technically good reinterpretation of an already quality song is impressive. Good material done well.

Lets get down to the Nitty Gritty... Dirt Band, that is...

So when I think of people known for doing Dylan covers, the NGDB doesn't exactly spring to mind. But they've made some changes in the lineup (I actually thought they did some farewell performances) and appear to be heading in a different direction...

They released an album called Dirt Does Dylan back in the spring...

And there are some fairly obscure choices among the standards... For example...

And here's another choice that is probably better known as a cover "hit", and occupies a special place in IU basketball lore trivia...

So let's play trivia, and maybe even if you're not old enough to have personal knowledge the clues will help you out...

Q... In the 75-76 unbeaten NC season two fairly popular songs were given extended play by the IU Pep Band at home games...

Those two songs were this Dylan classic, (linked below) which is more widely known as a radio hit for a group called Manfred Mann. This was (confusingly enough) NOT the same group that had a #1 hit with Springsteen's Blinded By The Light, but I'm not sure I know the distinction...

The other song was Philadelphia Freedom by Elton John...

So anybody know the connection to IU? I feel like I'm making it too easy... Philadelphia Freedom and this song...

And speaking of the NGDB, pretty sure more than a few lyrical references in this song are to the NGDB...

Not much to add to this performance... Levon on mandolin and Roseanne with the gorgeous vocals from 2011...

A song from The List... My earliest memory of this song is from 6th grade, where one of the older girls from high school would come over and teach us French. We actually learned it with the French lyrics...

Another classic from the list, and her voice and Bruce's compliment each other perfectly...

It was discussed earlier why we shouldn't like the Who, but I am a big fan. A couple songs off of Tommy. Sally Simpson came from an incident at a Doors concert, someone threw a chair at Morrison and hit a young girl.

And then there was Go to the Mirror, another of my favorite Who songs because 1) I love it 2) no CSI used it. Never was a fan of the CSIs even if I liked the theme songs.

Nothing like a story about a deaf, dumb, and blind kid that could play pinball. Sort of my biography.

While I prefer Quadrophenia overall, there are some awesome moments on Tommy as well. Since it's Woodstock week...

And a couple of massive rockers from Quadrophenia- First off 5:15...

And then Doctor. Jimmy...

For some reason this anthem of teenage rebellion became a staple among the guys on my floor prior to heading to AH during the back to back unbeaten seasons of 1974-75, and 1975-76...We had a certain amount of arrogance prior to each game and the chorus just seemed to strike a display of that with the defiant tone of the lyrics. Just projects an air of invincibility that IU fans felt back then...

Lone Justice. Saw them at Jakes in Bloomington, must have been the Shelter tour, late ‘86 or early ‘87? Maria McKee rocks.

Always loved Rod's cover of this classic. From Gasoline Alley...

And this masterpiece... Incredible vocal, melodic clarinet mournful l French horn and pretty sure that's some flute and possibly an oboe as well...

And one of my all time favorite rockers- love everything about this song. Amazing lyrics and incredible vocal delivery... I got this album for$ 2. 99 s as the special of the week at Zayres when I was a junior in high school...

Caught myself saying "Right now, right now" and this song popped into my head. Maybe the greatest song title ever...

And an epic performance from Letterman...

Faces and early Rod rocked .. then he became Rex Manning. (reference Empire Records)

I truly believe Sexy Rexy was based on Rod Stewart.

James brown featured here on Letterman, and Steve Jordan is just a beast. So good. My fave moment starts at 11:00 minutes in. Maybe the video is already cued there?

Here's one from my favorite local Austin band from my time there. It's more a Bakersfield sound than pure country (this one is latin influenced, too, obviously). The album, Reverb Deluxe, is my favorite:
