SEZ update, August 2018

LMAO at the flagpole banter! :) My son and I went to the ohio state-colorado game a few years back at osu. Even though the Buffs lost one of the Buff fans we were sitting with heckled the osu fans so bad about the flagpole in the endzone we were all in tears laughing so hard about it. Even the damn osu fans agreed its stupid, misplaced, and an eyesore. So yea, get rid of the flagpole!!! Put it somewhere else.
This is so stupid. I've never heard anything but positive things about the flagpole at OSU when I've been there and I sat in the visitor section a couple of times. The flag raising was one of the very cool things about the games I've attended. The Colorado fan sounds like a total moron. Mark me down as all in on the flagpole at Memorial Stadium.

Whatevs you weren't sitting with us that day so how would you know. The Colorado fan was from New York and a Yankees fan so as far as heckling goes the whole section was lmao. AND after sitting in that section right behind that stupid flagpole you can have it. Dumb place to put a flagpole, period. Nobody noticed the ROTC we were all checking out the osu cheerleaders when the freaking flagpole wasn't in the way! Lets put a flagpole right behind the goalpost...Great Idea o_O

To be fair, IU's flagpole obstructs the view of 1 of 2 video boards (albeit the larger/primary board), whereas OSU's obstructs the view of the field itself, thus infinitely more stupid.

I've been in both stadiums and I just don't get it. I've sat in the endzone with the flag at OSU and didn't even think about the view being obstructed. I sat in the stands near the IU flagpole and didn't have a problem with that either. Seriously seems stupid to me to be worried about that flagpole.

I don't mind the existence of the flagpole, just the location.

As tall as it is, it could go just outside the stadium and the flag would still be seen by everyone. SEZ isn't that tall compared to the flag pole.

Not worried about the flagpole. But spending millions of dollars on the primary screen and then having a flagpole that obstructs a good portion of the stadium from viewing it entirely is beyond idiotic. Especially when said flag pole could be behind the SEZ and everyone could still see the flag.

I agree, I'm just pointing out that other stadiums have even more intrusive obstructions, and that IU's flagpole isn't some moral failing of Glass as an AD

I just replied to all the people who were bitching about it. The first thing I thought about was, that game, that day, and the flagpole heckling. Guess you had to be there. I could care less about the flagpole but obviously some people don't like it. :)

nice to try and accommodate the handicapped, but i wonder for how many rows back will that design create a significant visual impediment, on top of the visual impediment the design creates for the handicapped there.

would a 12-18-24 inch curb not be sufficient, do they not make plexiglass like material that doesn't require that much bracing, and do the plexiglass like panels really need to be that high? ?

Notre Dame had a movie night last year where they played “Rudy” on their new jumbotron. IU should do something similar and show “Breaking Away.”

That would be (the movie night) a good "after the Spring Game" draw... Along with multiple other festivities (+ a baseball game against pu scheduled so it would end a couple of hours prior to the Spring Game)...

We just picked up a DT from AL and you'd rather pick a fight with a guy about ribbon boards than discuss a recruit?!? Geez...
I'm sure you mean the cranky old bastage wants to pick a fight about ribbon boards. ;) I'm really excited about the direction our recruiting is going. If we can get some more four stars we're really raising the bar!

I know it's been mentioned in this thread already at some point, but does anybody know if the Woodlawn to Bypass connection is happening and, if so, when? I assume it's too late this year to get that work done over the summer and would mess up gamed parking that's already sold, but it would be a great additional functionally with a nice chance to beautify as well.

I hope they don't go through with it. Having a major thoroughfare between Memorial Stadium and Assembly Hall? Not to mention cutting through trees and scenic area east of Mellencamp.

What a nightmare trying to navigate that with vehicle and pedestrian traffic.. No thanks.

was it to go all the way to the bypass, or just 17th st, which would essentially mean just connecting Woodlawn between 12th and 13th streets where the RR is.

It wouldn't be a major thoroughfare, but a highly landscaped two lane road turned into a pedestrian corridor on game days. It called for removal of many of the parking spaces on the east side of MS to replace it with a lawn. In the end, it would be much more scenic than the vast parking lots and small bunch of tress near Mellencamp. It was shown in the campus master plan completed in March 2010. They've stuck fairly close to that masterplan - although when it was completed, they were then planning to replace rather than renovate assembly hall, so they've diverged at times.

It’s going to happen.

I think it would be somewhat of a major thoroughfare, and would likely become a major access route to campus from the north. However, pedestrians wouldn't be much of an issue, except gamedays where the section between the bypass and 17th would get shut down anyway. I think a major goal of this is to alleviate traffic on Fee, which always has issues with pedestrians because of the dorms. Over the years, a few students have been killed crossing Fee, most recent about 8-10 years ago.

Question for anyone that has been by the stadium recently

What is the material used on the 2 "towers" on either side of the main entrance to the SEZ? It doesn't look like glass, is it some sort of metal mesh/patterned cutout? Would make sense if they were wanting to have substance to the structure while maintaining airflow to the stairs
