Retired Military Officers

I think it's important for retired military officers, especially senior officers, to stay out of politics generally. The only time they should get into it should be if they're running for office. In my private life, you wouldn't know if I was a Republican, Democrat or independent, although I'd guess most of those that work for me would peg me as independent.

That's my opinion.

I think I agree with you but haven't thought about it much. What is your reasoning? Do you think it affects how the current military operates? Or seems to politicize the military among civilians?

Other than the peaceful transfer of power to an opponent, there may not be a more important American tradition than civilian control of the military. The military needs to follow the orders of the executive with no thought whatsoever to who or which party is in power. Anything that even hints at partisanship, even in a small way, can act to undermine this principle, if not in practice, at least in the eyes of the public. I'm guessing that's one of the reasons the military has these strict decorum rules, even for retired officers.

fwiw - they (and everyone else of any authority for that matter) should also recognize belligerent foreign propagated propaganda slogans and not spread them. Even if they agree with the premise, using meme level condensed phrases for complex issues or peoples is not only lazy, but helps spread the dysfunction and divide in our populace..

It's like calling Republicans hillbillies .. just to piss them off. Hillbilly like woke, fits a broad range of people, takes the human being out of focus and redefines them into a nice neat little box you can easily hate.

Does the military have rules for retired officers not working for the Pentagon? I thought the (written) rules stemmed from the Pentagon contract, not the retired military status.
