I don't know if it was brought up in the super bowl thread, but I thought it was kind of interesting for discussion both practically and ethically:
During the game, a streaker came on the field and disrupted the game for about 30 seconds while security dealt with him.
Yuri Andrade was wearing a pink unitard with a porn site logo and got far enough on to the field that the announcers acknowledged the event, though the TV control room guys were fast enough to make sure that no footage made it on national television.
So, here's the twist: Yuri supposedly got a bunch of friends together and they placed up to $50,000 in prop bets at a casino that there would be a streaker during the game. The payout is going to be something along the lines of $375,000.
Now I am sure that Yuri will be spending a little bit of time in jail for this stunt, but I'm guessing the charges wont exactly be that serious (trespassing? Indecent exposure?). IANAL, but I suspect those are misdemeanor charges. Assuming that someone trying to do this probably doesn't really have to worry too hard about a current steady job that they would be fired from, the repercussions are probably fairly minimal considering the possible rewards.
From what I understand, he is likely not going to get paid, mostly because he couldn't keep his mouth shut about bragging about the situation and the casinos are investigating (and likely refunding all of the money for that particular prop bet).
The theory was sound though. With a little better planning and indiscretion, he probably could have gotten away with it.
So, what say you? Victimless crime? Another example of the downfall of American values? Are we going to see more things like this in the future because this guy came close?
Morally, you are placing bets when you know that the outcome is fixed, but at the same time, there is no guarantee that he would have been able to pull off getting on to the field and getting past security. I mean, you could make a prop bet that a basketball player who is accused of rape is going to miss a free-throw, and then sit in the stands behind the basket and have a sign that has words that you know will get under his skin. That is considered "gamesmanship", but morally it is still the same concept, trying to directly affect the outcome for a bet in your favor.
Would you go to jail for 3 days for $300,000.00 (and admittedly a bit of a black mark on your record)?
