New moderate 3rd party

I have no idea. I would assume the US, but maybe the US got a lot of its slaves from the Caribbean?
Cuba got about 2.5 times as many as the US did, according to Henry Louis Gates.*

And Brazil got a lot more. The sugar plantations were brutal (which is saying something when we’re talking chattel slavery). They literally worked them to death.

The US banned the international slave trade in the 1810s I believe. So the price of US slaves went up dramatically.

Everyone else in North and South America imported more Africans directly than the US. That's a point the new DeSantis anti-CRT teaching curriculum emphasizes.

So did we import more from other American colonies, or were we just really good at slave husbandry?

We didn't have much of a sugar economy, so didn't need them like the sugar areas did until the cotton gin was invented and could handle the increased cotton production.

I believe it was part agricultural focus. Part that we were the end of the line for where they could be sold.
So the crazy nuts aren't 100% wrong when they say slavery wasn't all that bad. Being a slave here was actually the best of a bad series of possibilities.

/not entirely serious, obviously

Mines too?

Maybe? Not that I ever heard of. I just distinctly remember my history prof in college being an antebellum period expert and talking specifically about how brutal the sugar plantations were.

It’s been a while, but I seem to recall something about one of the factors that gave rise to African slavery was that the colonies worked/diseased so many of the natives to death.

You're being trolled by Broadway.
My wife sent me the link and asked if I thought it was blasphemous given my love of the original. I said I don't care who plays the parts, I just care what they do to the music. If the new music is good, I am thrilled.

Maybe we’ve only been teaching the bad parts of slavery?
No, you are focusing in on a time period when someone on a physical health journey had the flu and using that time period to denigrate everything else they did on that journey.

“Republicans are fascists”, Joe Biden
He actually said the “extreme MAGA Republican philosophy” is “semi-fascist.”

Applying the dictionary definition, it’s certainly ultra-nationalist. Considering the white nationalist and religious right elements there is some aspect of the ethni-religious focus. I don’t know that the people in that group would want Trump to have autocratic control. Although with the cult of personality he’s built, I don’t know they wouldn’t.

In any event, the people described are a lot closer to the definition of fascist than the democrats are to the dictionary definition of communist, I.e, state control of the means of production, but that doesn’t stop anyone from making those pronouncements.

Solid point comrade moderator.

I just want to challenge his cognitive dissonance, although it’ll probably just reinforce it.

It's standard playbook stuff. "We're going to put a lot of coal miners out of work."

Speaking of which, did you see this article about a utility scale solar panel company investing $1B in a new plant in the southeast plus like $200M upgrading an existing Ohio plant because of the IRA incentives? Like, of course all that I vestment is going to go to parts of the country with the most hostility to the legislation and most resistant to climate science. Maybe it’ll bring ‘em around.

What he actually said doesn't matter to the Spartans out there.
Spartans is closer to accurate than TMFT is. Read the quote again.

BTW, the so-called “dictionary definition“ TMFT highlights is Nazi, not Fascist. That definition was probably written by a millennial product of pitiful public education.

I think it's fanning the flames, but there is an argument for calling out the white/religious nationalists among R candidates.
I watched that dramacumentory about J6, WOW. It had even me thinking that those nut jobs were on every street corner of every street in the entire USA. Obvioulsy there are extreme fringes but I believe those folks are way over glamorized from the left.

Must have been the same drama queens that worked on the summer riots.

Jan 6 was far worse than what happened during the summer riots/protests. Amazing how people can pretend the summer riots were so awful but then act like Jan 6 was nothing.

You might want to test your weed bro. I think someone spiked it with some hallucinogens. I literally quoted what Biden said about the extreme MAGA philosophy and semi-fascist.

And it is absolutely outstanding that you’d refer to Merriam-Webster as the “so called dictionary.” I’ll gladly look up the definition from ANY dictionary of your choosing.
