It depends on your definition of mediocre. With an (allegedly) Top 10 roster, no one expects IU to miss the NCAAT. But failing to finish top 3 in the B18 and reach the second weekend of the tourney, for example, would indeed be mediocre given the talent.
I haven't bashed the roster once. As mentioned, IU will improve on last season given the talent, and, barring disaster, make the NCAAT. But I've seen Woody coach college hoops for three seasons, and I'm not overly optimistic about IU's chances to actually contend for ... well, anything.
Some fans would be fine with, say, a 4th-place B18 finish and a tourney bid. If that would make you happy, then fantastic. To me, such a season would be the epitome of mediocre. If IU doesn't contend for the conference title and make at least the S16, that, imo, would be underachieving.
Anyhow, MW has the horses. If he's a good jockey, the Hoosiers may very well Win, Place, or Show. If that occurs, then I'll gladly admit I was too harsh on Woodrow. If, however, it's another underwhelming season, then I'll be the first to say "told you so."
Tell you what: Let's table this discussion until March to see where we're at.
I've been saying to table it until March, since September. Neither you,or any of the other haters have done that.
