Name of segregationist Ora Wildermuth stripped from IU gym

Guess the people at Kentucky don't feel the same way with their basketball arena.

Let's remove the Democrat Party since they are the foundation of the KKK, segregation and Jim Crow laws. Why no discussion about that? I thought so.
Because that philosophy is now with the current Republican Party. That is the party that is now promoting voter suppression, segregation, white supremacy, etc.

Your defense/justification of political correctness is what’s scary. People no longer discuss and learn, they seek and destroy as some means of righteousness.

If by 'PC' you mean efforts to make society tolerant, all-inclusive and egalitarian, have no idea why that scares you. It's people learning, and the societies that they constitute evolving with that new knowledge, that fosters what you cavalierly dismiss as 'righteousness'. But if you all you see in the struggle to overcome racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, etc. is destruction, its because that's what you want to see. There's actually a great deal more to it, but as you're so deep in denial, not much point. Cheers.
This is really simple. Time/history/perspectives constantly change. To look back 50+yrs to “erase” is ineffective. Marriage for 14 yr olds was common at one time. Point is it’s a slippery slope that never ends and is constantly changing. I don’t agree with his views, never have, but this could have been a point to educate. But typical of a pc crowd, you and others turn to mocking rather than actually try to see perspective.

Are you not edified? Others? Get real. You're not a victim. Don't trivialize or dismiss those who are by attempting to paint over substantive and deserved criticisms that support just and compassionate reforms with the broad brush-stroke of "mocking". If your feelings are hurt, allow that as a society we're not supposed to injure or compromise or debase others, consciously or otherwise, as a natural social consequence. It's abridgment of a basic human right. What does it say about someone who acts like improving on that is too much to ask or that it's so hard, or somehow uncivilized, rude, corrosive, or genuinely debilitating? Show some heart and Welcome to the Third Millennium - your "never ends and is constantly changing" - the future. Life.

Pretty sad that the concept of equal opportunity might be described as being politically correct.

Perhaps because such a ridiculous statement is not worthy of discussion.

Since that vague talking point has no real definition.

Please define what you think being PC is by using an example of how having to be courteous and following social norms has somehow oppressed you or not allowed you to communicate effectively.

TIA.

1948 was 70 years ago. The dude was what 66 years old. He lived in a different era. The folks who got his named removed could use their bandwidth better.

What's next? Will George Washington have to vacate his title as as the 1st president of the US? He owned slaves right? Will the Washington monument soon be renamed the Kaepernick monument?

More characteristically overwrought hysteria. Bet the dinosaurs didn't whine this much.

It is beyond my wildest imagination how folks could honor people that have held other human beings in slavery. It is not that long ago either. Took them from their country, beat them. Sell away their children. I don't understand it. Perhaps I will never understand.

In one 1948 letter, Wildermuth claimed the average intelligence of blacks was so far below whites that he believed it was “futile to build up hope for a great future.”

What exactly did Washington say again?

I bet if good ole Ora said that about white men your opinion might be slightly different.....

Better keep your eyes open for some source suggesting that the term Indian is demeaning and suggesting that the term Indiana should be replaced by something else, perhaps "Nativa."
Glad I wore my hiking boots, not only is the hill getting even more slippery, the bull sh*t is also piling up.

Not about destroying history. About exercising judgement in deciding what is worthy of honor. Actual history can't be changed or destroyed - unlike how one chooses to remember/embrace it.

Its really not about the past so much as the future. And the now.

Assuming your question wasn't rhetorical, look into Mao's cultural (d)evolution if you'd like to see what real destruction looks like.
ISIS would be In strong agreement. If you don't like the history, erase it from history.

Setting aside any debate about the veracity of your accusations and the current reality of which Party is championing racial discrimination, perhaps because they evolved. You should try it.
Please be specific. What racial discrimination are you referring to?

The persecution of European colonists and their descendants who are barred from exercising the divine right of conquerors to behave like pieces of shit, and the related infringement of privilege being prosecuted against the ultra-rich.

Really?

Because we have people saying it's not okay to quote Churchill. How long until we extend that to the founding fathers?
Wait until someone objects to the current naming of the court in Assembly Hall based on that coach’s history of racial attitudes. For every Bill Garrett, there were the likes of Bob Gibson and Oscar Robertson, both of whom came after BG, both of whom wanted to play basketball at IU, and both of whom were told “Thanks, but no thanks. We’ve reached our quota.”

What coach was named Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall?

Indiana officials spent decades planning and four years of construction before The Assembly Hall was finally opened in 1971 at a cost of $26.6 million.[10] The new "Assembly Hall" was named in honor of the school's first basketball arena of the same name.

"Court". McCracken Court. But his account is BS w.r.t. to the Big O. See Robertson's own words on page 64 of the link:

I agree. Why are these people whining about something from 70 years ago. Back to the bandwidth thing. Will they be picketing against segregation next week or will that be after they take scissors and cut out ol' Grandad from the family photo albums. They should do something useful for today's issues.

They couldn't even come up with a replacement name. Instead of recognizing someone different and affiliated with IU who has done great things in racial awareness, out of spite they wanted to paint this guy as a villian until they get a new name. He lived in his era when his viewpoint was the norm. Yes, it was wrong. Was his name put on the building for those viewpoints or for something he did that was good for the university?

These people don't care how much good a person has done, or will do.
All that matters to them is whether or not a person is a political "progressive".
If a person doesn't kiss the collective minorities asses he is labeled as unworthy of recognition for any good he does.

These are today's issues. If you were a 'person of color,' Amerindian, gay or a woman you might feel differently about some of this but guessing you didn't grow up being made to feel like you and your parents and grandparents are/were second-class citizens. Ideally people learn from their mistakes, aren't so petty that they can't admit to them, and do their best not to repeat them.

Big part of learning from mistakes is being mindful about what's taught, by example as well as by word. That's less about 'us' and more about what we're teaching to those who are younger by attempting to enshrine and exalt ideals and individuals who personify what is best about our species and society. No one was trying to paint Ora as a "villain", they even tried to move forward with co-naming the building, just determined that his 'record' wasn't up to standards going forward as someone worthy of being exalted at an institute of higher learning.

At the end of the day Ora is on record as proclaiming that people of color are essentially sub- or less than human. Doubtless a product of his times, but hardly a luminary in the constellation of humanity.

Don't worry, in a few more generations you and yours will be the "minorities" and someone may want to give you a "kiss".

Not sure how failing to exalt and honor a racist can be construed as 'ass-kissing' but by all means, rave on.
