Name of segregationist Ora Wildermuth stripped from IU gym

Are we the only country in the world who destroys our “history” because it does not match current thinking?

Not about destroying history. About exercising judgement in deciding what is worthy of honor. Actual history can't be changed or destroyed - unlike how one chooses to remember/embrace it.

Its really not about the past so much as the future. And the now.

Assuming your question wasn't rhetorical, look into Mao's cultural (d)evolution if you'd like to see what real destruction looks like.

Maybe ask one of Czar Nicholas II's great grand kids about that. Oh, that's right. I forgot. They didn't make it.

More political correctness that has been ruining this country's teachings and thinking for decades.

Unlike the genocide, slavery, indentured servitude, segregation and sexism that informed so much of its very creation. That political and still somewhat aspirational correctness you despise is the very "teaching and thinking" embodied in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution - as you doubtless imagine yourself to be a true patriot it's ironic that you view them as synonymous with ruin.

I doubt if this is as much about Ora as it is a change in the times and culture. Who wanted to change the name of the building and was it changed to honor someone we all respect?

Having your name honored and displayed at Assembly Hall is a gesture of respect for whatever accomplishments you have achieved. There is no PC going on here, but they are just updating Assembly Hall with today’s values. He can still be in the history books.

Your defense/justification of political correctness is what’s scary. People no longer discuss and learn, they seek and destroy as some means of righteousness.

The man did a lot for the state and University. A man's life is more than his mistakes. Thank God.

In one 1948 letter, Wildermuth claimed the average intelligence of blacks was so far below whites that he believed it was “futile to build up hope for a great future.”

Sounds like a great guy.....maybe we should remind recruits of this when they get on campus.

Political correctness is a purposefully vague and subjective talking point with no real definition and is often used as a con-view covering for passive bigotry. Common etiquette, cultural and social norms, are generally easy to follow and understand for anyone that's not a sociopath.

If being "PC" bothers you, it's because you're in some way a socially unacceptable a-hole.

If by 'PC' you mean efforts to make society tolerant, all-inclusive and egalitarian, have no idea why that scares you. It's people learning, and the societies that they constitute evolving with that new knowledge, that fosters what you cavalierly dismiss as 'righteousness'. But if you all you see in the struggle to overcome racism, sexism, misogyny, homophobia, etc. is destruction, its because that's what you want to see. There's actually a great deal more to it, but as you're so deep in denial, not much point. Cheers.

Much, not all, of the PC universe is appropriate. I struggle only with the vitriolic purveyors of PC who are some of the least inclusive and most hypocritical people I am aware of.

Can you imagine how terrible the world would be of more people were actually considerate of other people's feelings and more inclusive? You're right, PC is ruining things.

Dws
it's very simple. live and let live.

Well put and thank you.

They miss the good ol' days when women stayed in the kitchen, gays stayed safely locked away in their closets, and blacks didn't dare talk back. That there was when 'Murica was 'Murica.

Let's remove the Democrat Party since they are the foundation of the KKK, segregation and Jim Crow laws. Why no discussion about that? I thought so.

Setting aside any debate about the veracity of your accusations and the current reality of which Party is championing racial discrimination, perhaps because they evolved. You should try it.
