HOLY SHIT. Royal Rumble in Madison.

It’s 100% on Howard. He entered the handshake line voluntarily. Gard tried to shake his hand and say something. Howard lost his composure leading to him throwing the first punch.

It’s because Gard took a timeout with 30 seconds to go. Howard took exception. But Gard can be grabbing grown men like that. Howard needs to keep cool, but there are many men who take being grabbed as a reason to know someone kn their behind
Wisconsin was playing subs and UM was pressing down 14 under 20 seconds.

The conference can only suspend coaches up to two games max. Of course the schools can add on if they choose to do so.

Gard isn't allowed to grab somebody because they say something. Gard escalated the situation and is no angel.
Who knows what Gard said. He may have been trying to apologize for all we know. The point is Howard was in the handshake line voluntarily, which allows the other team to address you. Gard tried to say something and Howard lost it. I am no fan of Gard, but I don’t think his body language was against educate or incited a fist fight.

Howard said something, and Gard escalated it by grabbing him and getting in his path. Howard was within his rights to get Gard off of him and out of his way at that point. You can't just grab somebody and prevent them from moving forward in their path because you want to say something to them: that is battery.

Gard definitely deserves a suspension for starting it. Inexcusable to grab someone cause he doesn’t want to talk to you. Howard deserves the longer suspension (possibly rest of the year) for escalating things by throwing the punch/ open hand slap. A coach just cannot do that.
Gard didn't "grab" him. They were pointing at each other and touching. There was no grabbing.

You surely aren’t serious with this excuse? Howard said I’ll remember this and blew by. Gard grabbed him by the arm to explain why he called a timeout. Battery? Lmao Them he hits the wrong guy…. Hope the Wisconsin coach presses charges. No room for that.

Howard assaulted that one guy?

Howard walks passed and doesn't even want to make eye contact, let alone shake his hand. Then GG grabs him kind of and Howard has none of it, he was going to fight at that point.
No he wasn't. He didn't punch Gard. Geez.....

Let's see what the Harvard of the midwest does!! I say three game suspension for Howard is all the Harvard of the midwest gives him.

This is so silly. He grabbed his arm to talk to him. That happens constantly in life and with coaches. Howard acted like a toddler screaming don’t touch me. Then he hit someone else!! Genius.
So, if somebody you don't want to talk to grabs your arm, gets in your path, and prevents you from moving forward in your path, you are fine with that? Battery is a physical act that is harmful or offensive to the person, and Juwan wasn't ok with that. Gard did not grab Juwan's arm in a friendly way, and Juwan rightfully told him to back the hell off.

I'm not apologizing for Juwan throwing a punch. But, Gard played his part as well. Wisconsin does this type of crap all of the time. Gard could have let Howard walk on by, and that would have been it. Check out how Davison and Gard were behaving after Michigan left the court: still instigating.

It’s really all Wisconsin’s fault. If they hadn’t kicked Michigan’s a$$, then Juwan wouldn’t have had a temper tantrum. Suspend all the Badgers. Let’s get back to the root of the problem.

It takes two to tango. Everybody needs to be held accountable, and Gard isn't an angel. I have no problem with Howard being held more accountable because he threw a punch.

There is a ton of video of people doing a slight touch like pulling someone’s elbow when walking thru the handshake line. There is almost no examples of a coaching punching/slapping another coach in the face after said lineup line.

Plus Howard loses any legitimate defense when he hit a coach other than Gard. Gard should have probably let him walk by but that (at worst) would require an apology.

Also, the timeout was to stop a 2nd or 3rd straight turnover when Howard was pressing UW’s backups. The players were then fouled by Michigan so you would assume that Michigan might be still trying.

The scoring done by UW was before Michigan called off all their players (other than Hepburn’s buzzer beating 3). You can blame Hepburn for shooting since he doesn’t want a turnover and their was still 90 second left.

Don't forget Johnny Davis caught on camera immediately after the last IU game taunting someone with "Bye Bye, Bye Bye."
Davis has some edge to him but that is also what help makes him great. He plays like he is slighted by everything. I can see how the players can rub people the wrong way but this situation was not at all caused by that. It was caused by a hot head who thinks he can do whatever he wants. The fact that he didn’t offer even the slightest apology shows he thinks he did nothing wrong.

You think Wisconsin has any credibility left at this point? They instigate crap all of the time: it is a pretty big part of their program. Gard and Davison were continuing to instigate after the skirmish.

If a physical contact is not harmful or offensive to a person, then it isn't battery. It depends on the context. Gard did not grab Juwan or block his path in a nice way, and he should have let Howard walk on by.

That is not even close enough to justify an battery when are dealing with that type of situation. Only way you could argue that is if there were prior instances of ill will with the individuals. You could use that type of “grab” as a reason for a restraining order at best (but would need more evidence). There would be never be a self defense argument with that being the only provocation. Feel free to say it shouldn’t have happened or hurt the situation. But stop quoting the law when you have no idea.

Then MI guys were just throwing haymakers... I mean what are you suppose to do when you see your coach slap/hit an assistant.

I rewatched after the TO was called and Howard was steaming and had his guys foul WI. Then he death stared down at GG. I mean he lost his mind. Cant do that when you are a leader of 18-22 year olds.
This is where I’ve landed too. In 2022 you can’t do that. You just can’t. I wouldn’t be surprised if the U of M lawyers are in CYA mode in preparation to fire him.

You need to reread my posts: I am in no way excusing Howard's punch. However, I'm also holding Gard accountable for his bad actions, as well as anybody else that was fighting.

I said what his accountability should be.

“but that (at worst) would require an apology.”

You have to think about the situation as of a punch hadn’t been thrown. You would never justify a suspension for Gard for doing that in a handshake line without Howard’s reaction. So then you shouldn’t consider his reaction when thinking of a punishment for Gard.

It's exactly why you consider a suspension for Gard. He let's Howard pass without grabbing him and the whole incident never happens. It's typical instigation by the Badgers basketball program.

That argument could be made for anything. If Howard didn’t walk past Gard then Gard wouldn’t have wanted to talk to him. So Howard should be suspended for walking past?

Why was Howard even in the handshake line? He could have easily skipped it. He was in it so he could talk shit to Gard. I feel dirty sticking up for Wisconsin, I hate them, but this is ridiculous.

Great video.

It shows Gard was s-o-o-o embarrassed by these events that he didn't make his players and coaches leave the floor to go either to the locker room or back to the bench. Instead they just stayed on the floor relishing the moment with their fans.

And, it's bizarre that the video shows that Wisconsin sent Davison of all people to strut around the floor masquerading as a peacemaker. Gard should not only have picked a better time to confront Howard (like a private phone call later) but, when things escalated, Gard should have taken control of his coaches and players and got them off the court.

Howard shouldn't have swung, but there's fault on Wisconsin, too.

Because Gard escalated the situation instead of defusing it. Gard, Davison, and other Wisky folks continued to try to instigate after Michigan had left the court. This is how Wisky behaves, and they played their part in the mess.

Michigan should have to leave the court. UW players usually go sing Varisty with the student section after home games. Michigan was still standing in front of the student section. That is a BS take if you know the tradition.

He is shown on film walking past Gard, who then grabs him.
I’ve seen the video a hundred times. He did try to get passed Gard, after he mouthed off to him. It’s a big court. Originally it looked like he was detouring and skipping line, then he got back in line. We’ve seen many coaches skip it. Why didn’t he? Because he wanted to mouth off and walk away.

Both programs behaved poorly. Sure, Howard was the star of the show. But, Wisconsin pulls this type of s*** all the time: it is no accident they were involved in this mess.
