Chicago politics and events

Do you think these people are "serious" people? They are not.
Johnson strikes me as an earnest guy. His personal story is actually quite compelling and I like that he has strong faith and family that guides him. As far as I can tell, it’s not an act either. Watching his inauguration address it’s no wonder he beat Vallas, the charisma gap was/ is staggering.

However, he is quite sheltered and naïve. Chicago is more than Austin and the rest of the west side. His entire life has been spent in the public sector and the bowels on the Chicago teachers union. He has no idea the ingredients needed for real economic prosperity. I’m hoping city hall realities can help him recalibrate.

Regardless I have think (hope) that income and wealth taxes would be a non starter. I think if he were to answer honestly he would see this pie in the sky proposal as a nuisance.

Even 1/4 of what’s proposed in this package would accelerate the decline of Chicago precipitously.

Earnest and honest =/= serious. Or wise. Or effective.

Just got back from NYC. It’s subways are clean, well air conditioned, and devoid of sleeping homeless, pot smoke, cigarette smoke, or urine. Why can’t Chicago have nice things?

NYC even used to have Michael Jackson impersonators...

Pot smell is Fing disgusting. I’m beyond sick of smelling that shit walking into stores and have become vocal about it to people standing around with that shit. There’s a real opportunity for some smart engineer to come up with something to mask that smell. I don’t give a shit what people do but if one guy can make an entire block stink it’s a problem

Haven’t there been a bunch of murders in the subway in NYC the last couple of years? Is the L the same?

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning, it smells like victory".

The el has murders. Worse (and yes, I realize how I used that word) is the disgusting state of the cars. I rode public transportation from and to LaGuardia. It was extremely clean, didn't smell, no one smoking on them.

Plenty of people in Chicago avoid the train and especially the bus at all costs. It’s part of the reason why traffic is so bad.

But, team let’s go Brandon Johnson just approved 51MM to house migrants after the most violent memorial weekend since 2016 which he blamed on poverty, so everything is fine. That money is going to good use.

Exactly. Pete Buttegeig yammers on and on about getting people out of cars and into public transportation. Yet he never mentions a big reason why people don’t use it. Make it safe, clean, and comfortable and people will use it.

Here it’s inconvenient. Smells like shit. Dangerous as hell. Pete’s clueless. Better off skipping the vouchers and public transit give everyone down payments for buy here pay here cars. Let’s ride!!!

Decriminalizing taking a piss or taking a shit anywhere in public, or public indecency was a huge mistake. Yet most progressive cities did just that because it’s progressive. They have no idea what progressive even means.

We had a guy shot and killed on ours last month on a Saturday afternoon in a decent part of town. Forget it.

The L in Chicago is gotten bad. A family member got confronted by a group of teenagers riding the blue line home from O’hare about a year ago. Thankfully nothing physical happened, but we’re done with that. Just not worth it.

I feel bad for normal people who need it for work. Most anyone on the Blue line just takes Ubers or Uber shares EVERY SINGLE DAY to get to work downtown. Then all the bike hippies complain about traffic. (I own 3 bikes FWIW)

People smoke ciggs in the cars, drink, piss, you can basically do whatever you want and everyone just sits there. If a fight breaks out you better hope some other normal non violent people are around to at least temper it and hit the call button.

Meanwhile the mayor and his “democratic socialist caucus” are giving 51MM to house migrants at local universities that are out for the summer. All after the most violent Memorial Day weekend in seven years which he blamed on poverty.

I took my bike on the lakefront yesterday and the entire path is covered in an inch of sand. They are always cleared in the past. Popular parks haven’t been mowed this season, etc. Plus we have a casino going up. It’s basically Detroit Jr. at this point for anyone who’s ever spent time in Detroit.

33% of the resident voted in the past election LMAO. (not LMAO)

Just drove down division this morning, it’s like a scene out of the wire.

Monday morning at noon, and five squad cars are out in front of a currency exchange cuffing and leading some kids into the back of a squad car. Couldn’t have been older than 21.

3 older hoodlums milling on the corner smoking weed watching it happen. Why are none of these people working? Meanwhile yuppies are ducking in and out of Jewel, eyes glazed over, this is life now.

10 murders this weekend. Streeterville, Little Italy, museum campus among the locations.

I’m worried that with the Nasacar race and lollapalooza coming up Brandon Johnson is not going to be able to keep a lid on the chaos and it will spill out into the open for everyone to see.

It’s a grim thought but maybe the public shame of someone being murdered at Lollapalooza or a NASCAR race could knock loose some common sense. If that Museum campus shooting is two hours earlier it’s in the middle of everyone leaving a ****ing Taylor Swift concert for f*cks sake.

Chicago is going to die a slow death, and I’ll be long gone before that happens thankfully.

The last election was a last hope IMO, and it’s clear that white liberals are going to double down on dumb. Plus with 33% voter turnout it’s apparent the populous at large does not give two shits. Chicago is one of the easiest US cities to vote in.

The craziest part of this to me is the mayor lives in one of the most affected communities, and he’s approving spending for migrants. Then blaming poverty for the violence. Maybe put some money and develop these communities vs. schilling for failed National democratic policies/trends?

The only people touting Chicagos greatness are the nostalgic. The big tax base will slowly dry up and it will get worse… slowly. The only question is when will the North side realize their downtown has crumble and their neighborhoods are on deck.

Mayor Adams has a fool proof plan for the migrant crisis.

Vallas got 48% which isn’t nothing. Almost half the alderman supported Vallas. Still a lot of sanity in the city. If he had even announce if charisma maybe he could have made it over the finish line. I’ve never seen a worse public speaker in my life.

I would bet the thought of leaving Chicago has crossed at least half of Vallas voters minds.

He ran circles around Johnson in the debates and is infinitely more experienced for the job. His appearance fit a narrative and it was over from there. Then you have out of town celebrities like Wilco, John Cusak, Bernie, Elizabeth Warren, and there you have it. A celebrity candidate with no real experience or credentials.

All things considered, it’s hard to make this story up. All of these idiots can live the results they co-signed.

I had the good sense🙄 to get myself underneath a Gold Coast condo a little over a year ago. The second I can break even or better I’m long gone.

I picked my wife and daughter up from the concert last night and was worried about something going down.

Doing pick ups and drop offs from soldier field is gods work. You must have extraordinary patience.
It was a night my daughter was looking forward to. I wanted to be a part of it. Pure selfishness.

That’s just a little south of where all the “teen takeover” nonsense happens. I assume the police would try to push things south of the art institute. It would not be fun to be stuck in your car for something like that.

It’s so ridiculous to even think about that happening. You would think they had the concert area well secured, but you never know.

The chances of me being around that part of town, millennium park, etc. late on any Thursday through Sunday are zero. For one, I’ve been there done that, 2. Can you imagine having 50 assholes surrounding your car with no help in site? F that.

The least, the very least, gov should provide for all we pay in is a remedy for that feeling. And whoever is in charge at the time you have that feeling should never get your vote
Well, Brandon Johnson said “defunding the police is actually a real political goal,” and he got elected. Meanwhile Chicago has 50+ shooting every weekend with double digit homicides.

I don’t think he ever expected to actually be mayor. This is probably all just as big of a shock to him. Why he freaked out and hired a Daley insider for COS.

He was at the police academy graduation today and said “I have your back”….. we’ll see.
