I still look for Woody to play an out if whack rotation even though this game doesent mean much other than optics.

Reneau
MgBako
Goode. (galloway not 100%?)
Carlyle
Rice

6- Ballo
7- Cupps
8- Tucker

9-10- PossiblyHatton, then Leal, minor sweat for Galloway, do not see James or Newton. Thoughts?

Would like to see a bunch of Reneau/Mgbako, Goode, and our backcourt vs Marian with Tucker & Ballo. Soooo deep. Goode helps with the Galloway & Newton question marks.

We will start both Malik and Ballo. Woody has talked about playing smaller, but I think we will start both halves with both bigs, and then when we sub one out we will be small the rest of the half, but will be small the rest of the way. Lineup will be Rice, Carlyle, MM, Malik, and Ballo with Goode, Cupps, Tucker getting the majority of the bench minutes (depending on health of TG and Newton) with Hatton and Leal playing a few mins

I would say you hit it on the head.

Let's see how clunky or not the two bigs play together. I think it's more about Mgbako being able to close out and defend the perimeter.

I know I'd like to see Woody pick Ballo or Reneau and go with Tucker at the 3 and Mgbako the 4.

how would you rank the starters with Ball handling? i feel we're pretty good in that sense and here is how i would rank them:

1. Rice
2. Raneau
3. Carlyle
4. Mgbako
5. Ballo

TJD had an awful passing game at the start of college career. But he progressed really impressively. Hoping MR can do the same. He has a ways to go.

^^This^^

Woody hasn't shown a lot of creativity in exploring different lineups and combinations. I expect he'll start what he thinks will be our starting rotation and then sub out individually, but not really play with combinations, in the first game. I think he'll want to establish a baseline and then adjust if he doesn't like something he sees.

Barring injury, I think the best you can hope for is that grouping when either Ballo or Reneau go to the bench.

not sure how the lineup eventually shakes out but I can't see starting the first game, even an exhibition game, with our $2M free agent on the bench, if he's healthy.
an interesting strategy: starting Ballo and sitting MR. platooning those guys at the 5 and getting them to play flat out every second could wreck opposing teams game preparations. can you imagine as the other team begins their own substitution patterns and their subs have to face MR?

If healthy, not a chance. CMW has never shown the desire or willingness to toy with lineups too much and I don't expect it to start now. I'm pretty confident we'll see MR and OB starting each half, but I think he'll keep one on the floor all the time, but during those sub periods after the start of each half is when we'll see a 4 out approach. And, maybe sitting Ballo at the end of games if his FT shooting doesn't improve. He did shoot 70% as a soph, so maybe we can see an improvement there! If not, it's nice to have MR and even Hatton available. Lots of parts on this team!

This has been my observation as well. It's likely the starting lineup at Tennessee will be the starting lineup for a bulk of the season...

haven't heard anything lately....what's the over/under on Ballo showing up at the TN exhib game in a boot? After all...."It's Indiana"...which means we can't start the season without at least one starter wearing the infamous IU boot.

Very uneducated guess here...based on highlights of incoming guys...

Rice
Carlyle
Mgbako
Reneau
Ballo

Gallo, Goode, Tucker, Cupps main rotation subs.

Some extended minutes with only 1 of Reneau or Ballo on the floor.

Our starting lineup doesn't have to look "clunky". That obviously depends on how Reneau and Ballo are used. But Ballo has always been a very active inside/outside type movement big. And Reneau started to do a lot more of that last year as the year wore on. I hope to see a lot of early "5 out" looks, even with our starters on the floor. Ballo is a proven pick and roll player. Reneau showed he can shoot the ball last year. They're both more than capable of diving in to the post when opportunities arise. But parking either of them down there isn't necessary. Ballo doesn't play that way anyways. And it isn't helpful for Reneau, or our team, either.

From memory, I think Ballo is one of the best PnR guys I've seen at the college level. Kofi Cockburn's size but more athletic. Hope he stays healthy this year. We've rarely had the "huge guy" at center, and to have a guy that size who's also athletic is exciting. After railing at the refs for 2 years on all the contact they allowed Edey to initiate and get away with, I just hope they stay frustratingly (for the other programs; especially one up in WL) consistent this year!

Yeah...don't get your hopes up on that. That would require Ballo committing fouls on basically every single play like Edey did. And forcing the refs to basically give up, and not call much of anything...really either way.

I still think Gallo, if healthy, starts, at least early in the season. Should MW start Carlyle and utilize TG as a 6th-man spark? Quite possibly. But I don't see him benching a loyal 5th-year senior ... again, at least early.

Yep every exhibition game ifs always like 3 od the rotation players have a cold or a sore foot.

I thought that too, but the way his recovery has dragged on and his comments, and the fact that there is a lot of talk about Carlyle being so good on both ends of the floor, has me thinking maybe they have sold Gallo on being something of a "super sub" and having Rice and Carlyle start. I thought like you did that Gallo would start with how he's been loyal to his upperclassmen, but now I'm thinking Carlyle will start. Doesn't really matter, as I think Trey will be the first guard/wing off the bench and will get plenty of minutes.

I'd love to see scrimmages and how they are breaking up teams. Guessing they are mostly playing Cupps/Gallo vs Rice/Carlyle in the backcourt.
