Why Is there a Shortage of Baby Formula?

They aren't necessarily viable leases just because they are available and This administration has made it much more difficult to drill so while the lease may be available and sound all good, that isnt really the case. Biden just cancelled drilling permits in the Gulf and Alaska which would be much better ones.

Mythology.

There was a steep downturn in production during 2020, the first year of the pandemic / last year of the Trump administration, then there has been a steady recovery, such that in 2022 we will likely set all-time records for USA oil production.

The USA is a net oil producer. The USA only imports oil at all because the oil companies find it far more profitable to export oil than to direct it to the domestic market

This isn’t about Oil Company profits. It’s about the Climate crowd wanting to switch to electric vehicles.

Do you know how to read a graph? Did you notice that the first steep upturn in domestic oil production this century occurred in 2012-2016, the second Obama administration? Did you notice the recent upturn in domestic oil production following a certain inauguration in January 2021? Is there a light on in your brain?

I have a friend that works for a private drilling company. Not an oil company and he said you wouldn't believe how much more difficult it is to drill. That 9000 lease story is Total bullshit, but Democrats eat it up like candy and think they know WTH they are talking about while remaining clueless.

9,000 leases are meaningless. Have to spend money to prospect to know if they are worth a shit. Gold Rush 101
That is true but if the oil companies have the leases then why aren’t they drilling or looking for more oil. My point is why should they when they are making nice profits and exporting some as well.

Thanks. Really interesting reading as well as informative. Typical of all government statements and regulations. Always telling you what you want to hear but not telling you everything.

No, they are not comparable.
Michigan is looking at rolling blackouts this summer. One nuclear plant shut down , shut down coal plants even though the government is pushing electric vehicles that require even more electricity. Democrats are the only people truly stupid enough to not understand their plan was a failure from the start and yet idiots voted for it.

Have you seen pictures of the warehouses? Obviously no.

Biden has been playing catch up his entire life. He has no clue what he is doing. At least trump wasn't afraid to tackle a problem. He may have made some mistakes but at least he did something. The entire problem revolves around the Biden Adm shutting down the plant that provided 43% of the market with no plan over 2 deaths it turns out had other circumstances.
As usual you're wrong, especially regarding Abbott's role in this mess...

What I tried to point out earlier, is that the conditions that led to this crisis ALL preceded Biden. Biden did not somehow magically make Baby Formula a monopolistic entity- That was a situation he inherited. For all I know, Trump inherited it as well, so I'm not blaming Trump for the fact that the suppliers form a monopoly, because I don't know. I do know it didn't occur in the past 1 1/2 yrs...

Similarly the FDA regulations on labeling which limit foreign imports is not a product of any Biden era legislation or decree. Again that is another situation he inherited, and without researching it that could link back to the 20th Century. Neither you or I know, but you're the one who tried to put this on Biden and score political points...

No idea why you want to try and absolve Abbott and minimize their role, because they are clearly RESPONSIBLE. Two things we KNOW about Abbott's role-first, they lobbied for less safety measures in the Industry. As I said earlier I don't know if that found favor with the Trump Admin, but we do know that Trump has made "less regulation" a centerpiece of his philosophy. Trump could have attempted to increase safety regulations, but that wouldn't exactly align with his political or business perspective. So I won't say he allowed them to become more lax, because I don't know...

But Abbott's duplicity goes back further than just Jan 2021, when the new Admin took over. A former Abbott employee contacted the FDA in Oct 2021, and the FDA seemingly dropped the ball on investigating his charges.
But the actions he detailed didn't just occur over a single 9 mos period from Jan 2021-Oct 2021. These offenses had to go at least back to some portion of the Trump Admin, if not longer... Some of the offenses he mentioned include falsifying records, lying about the scope of safety tests they conducted, and knowingly selling contaminated product. Remember this was brought to the FDA's attention in Oct 2021, and the shutdown in MI didn't occur until Feb 2022. So the illness and death which prompted the Feb shutdown ocurred AFTER the whistleblower had already submitted his (34 pages) of charges...

He wasn't blaming ABBOTT after the fact. He warned there were problems coming in the future, but the FDA didn't act quickly enough to address them. So Abbott's CEO trying to alleviate any responsibility looks pretty ridiculous, when prior to any of these events occurring a former Abbott employee had already alerted the FDA about Abbott's misconduct.

But for some reason you want to take Abbott's side? Again in Oct, a former plant employee accused them of lying about their testing procedures and lying to the FDA. And this is before any babies got sick. And now you want to believe they're being truthful?

We know about all of this belatedly, because the whistleblower contacted Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and sent her the report which she has made public.

“This is an issue of supply and food safety,” DeLauro told Yahoo Finance Live (video above). “Abbott has really been a bad actor.”

DeLauro, citing a 34-page whistleblower report she received from a former Abbott-plant employee, alleged that the nation’s largest manufacturer of baby formula "sold knowingly a contaminated product. They cut corners. They falsified records. They didn't test the cans themselves. They tested bottles. They lied to the FDA and audit reports. So [there's] a whole list of particulars that they need to be held accountable for.”

Too bad we can't all have the same power grid as Texas...Cancun Ted will likely go somewhere cooler than Mexico to escape the summer heat. Maybe we will have a new nickname for him like "Alaska Cruise" (Cruz)- pun intended...

Everyone on here who post even a few times has a pretty well-established persona. Hell, even though you have gone through several screen names, you (and ordfan) are still easy to pick out. :D
Personas are always predictable. It's what makes them personas.
Yeah, I was wondering why he left himself (or the folks who liked his post, ftm) off of his "list"...

And yet all the Climate deniers have decided to enthusiastically endorse Elon Musk as a fellow "red Pill" adherent? Here's a couple who somehow love Elon, but seem to be unaware that his company manufactures the electric vehicles they despise...

So Cray I'm curious. Do you just use the "ha-ha" emoji whenever you don't like what's posted but have no facts to offer to contradict what was posted? Did I post some false claims regarding Abbott's role?

What exactly is Biden's "role" in Abbott being forced to shut down voluntarily over events which date back to before Biden was POTUS? I mean are you discussing this topic to legitimately investigate what happened or why, or are you just looking for cheap political points and facts be damned?

And you gave a ha-ha to what I posted above, but I posted in response to the nonsense you posted here...

"Democrats are the only people truly stupid enough to not understand their plan was a failure from the start and yet idiots voted for it."

How can that even remotely be true or accurate, when we already have the tragic example of the GOP in Texas and their insane plan to deregulate power companies? You talk about the inconvenience of blackouts in MI, but seemingly want to ignore the GOP Legislative boondoggle in Texas that resulted in people freezing to death, and numerous folks being charged thousands of dollars for heating bills...

And the article I posted illustrates that even though TX Gov Abbott vowed the problem would be fixed during the recent Legislative session it never was. That's because the Texas GOP had other priorities and never addressed the issue. Because culture wars...

So 4 sick babies, and 2 deaths, with no real proof of causation, caused a shortage for all other mothers and infants.

The Nanny State run amok. Again.

I've seen reports that the Abbott plant had lots of issues; dirty, leaking roof, etc. Those were actually what led to the shutdown.

Nationalizing an industry is no big deal. Should be done more often.
So I just started reading this thread, so maybe this question is premature as you admit this is just TIC. But, if not, do you seriously believe this? Which industries should thus be nationalized?

Sigh. Definitely TIC. Given the context and the personas involved, I'm surprised you had any question.

Did any of that cause even illness?

The starving babies are real. That shut down was about possibilities.

Stupid science nerds doing stupid things with power.
So I came across this analysis by Matt Stoller, and it seems to offer a non-biased in depth examination of all the major forces that combined in sort of a perfect storm. He doesn't seem to be speaking as a partisan and doesn't blame Biden or Trump, but he does provide some insight into how even the single sourcing of WIC contracts eliminates competition within the industry. And he discusses how Abbott falsified records in response to previous FDA issues, and also the reason the claims from Abbott's CEO regarding "testing" are extremely suspect...

It's long but it seems to refute a lot of the assertions you're making, so I'd be interested in any counter argument you are inclined to provide. I watched it without any preconceived notions about either Stoller or what he was going to say, and I generally find Breaking Points a little right of center on most issues. But he provides an extremely thorough review of what market forces led to not only baby food, and other shortages but what is driving supply chain issues overall...
