I thought this was an excellent Ted Talk. The idea is that America forms stories to explain it's meaning. For a long time it was laissez-faire but the Great Depression changed that. Keynesian took over until Carter then Reagan changed us to neoliberalism.
The problem is today that 2008 shattered faith in neoliberalism but nothing has replaced it. We do have the Great old debate, is it best to have cooperation or competition.
The speaker makes the point that humans evolved with cooperation.

Sure, we all have a bit of selfishness and greed inside us,but in most people, those are not our dominant values. And we also turn out to be the supreme cooperators. We survived the African savannas, despite being weaker and slower than our predators and most of our prey,by an amazing ability to engage in mutual aid,and that urge to cooperate has been hardwired into our mindsthrough natural selection. These are the central, crucial facts about humankindur amazing altruism and cooperation.
Now his answer isn't so much anything we have today. He thinks national cooperation is not the answer, we need local cooperation which builds communities and partipatory democracy.
