I've been criticized because (it's been said) that when I say mean things about the mouth-breathing morons who support Trump, this merely triggers them to go out into the real world and stomp around like petulant children. As a result (people tell me) it's my fault that the mouth-breathing morons are acting out like petulant children. One wonders how they learned to routinely do this pretty much every day of their existence before they encountered me on an obscure internet message board, but let's assume that the broader critique is true:

Interweb assholes like me are unnecessarily inflaming the nitwits, and if only assholes like me would stop inflaming the nitwits, then maybe the nitwits would calm down and stop electing corrupt unfit imbeciles to the White House.
Many things boggle me about this critique. It's hard to prioritize them but the first one I'm going to talk about is obviously the exceptionally bleak picture it paints of Trump supporters -- they lack all agency and are impelled to act like morons in lockstep response to perceived insults. This should be deeply offensive to each and every Trump supporter who doesn't remotely resemble that description. Both of them. Maybe.

And another big thing that baffles me about this is that it's primarily a criticism of people like me. Now, of course, let's leave lots of room for people to have fun with that. Of course the know-it-all doesn't see he's the butt of the joke. If I were you that's where I'd go, so I sort of have to be okay with it. But let's stop and think for a moment.

It's now regarded as a thing in politics -- the sort of thing that gets discussed on cable news shows -- that conservative white guys are getting massively emotionally triggered and are acting out all over the place. And -- just so we're clear what I'm emphasizing -- this isn't regarded as the fault of the people acting irresponsibly like petulant children. It's regarded as the fault of liberals triggering them. Again, whether it's Sean Hannity of Fox News or earnest liberals right here, the diagnosis is the same: It's liberals' fault that wingnuts are stupidly excited.

You know what? Maybe so. I once saw a Twilight Zone like this. A petulant child unexpectedly gains God-like powers, and all the adults have to cower in mortal fear of his grotesque whims. Well, f#ck that.

If I offend you, then I may apologize. But if you blame me for the stupid things that you do, then I laugh at you. As Orin Hatch contemptuously dismisses adult women, "Grow up." And after all, no one worries about whether people like him will trigger people like me.

Pew just came out with a study on Trump supporters. I'd link it but can't find it in 22 seconds so screw that. It analyzed in presumably an extremely effective way how warm and fuzzy they were about him when they voted for him and how, now. A very large percentage stayed warm and fuzzy. Some 10% or so were not so warm and fuzzy and another +-10% or whatever were feeling cold about him. Takeaway, he's probably lost up to 10% of the people who loved his golden balls in 2016. So I wonder if he'll make that up elsewhere. I doubt it.

But to your point, it appears about 75% or whatever ain't gonna change. Think of them as the Zebras. They have no intention of changing, so who gives a rat's ass about them. Call them for what they are. You can't go wrong and you can sleep at night with a good conscience because deep down, they too know they're exactly what you described above.

A story to help us think about triggering.

Husband gets up in the morning. He asks his wife to make toast for him when he comes down after taking his shower. He takes his shower comes down to the kitchen and finds his wife reading the paper but she has not made toast. He rips the paper out of her hand and beats her to an inch of her life. When she regains consciousness she asks him why he beat her up? He says it was her fault: she triggered his violent response by not making his toast. The wife tells the husband that the beating and his explanation have triggered her in return. As a consequence of being triggered she is going to seek out counseling--right after she makes him toast.

So here is a question for you. Who should we most worry about triggering: the abusive husband or the abused wife?

I have not seen where you are being blamed for something. Most of us just disagree with you. Do your posts (mainly the left on the board and the media) and support for socialistic policies make me speak up more instead of letting things pass while in public? Yes I assume it does. But to think you personally have any effect on me....no you don’t.

All I hear is blah, blah from you all while your prior candidate for President is dog whistling political violence to groups like the ones who took over part of Portland a few days back and the guy who shot up a bunch of Republican Congressmen.

We see y'all...we have been seeing you for decades.

A couple of questions for "y'all".
1. do you think liberals are stockpiling huge quantities of weapons?
2. do you think large liberal groups and liberal churches are actively encouraging their followers that the wide-spread breakdown of society imminent (and welcome) and start to hoard survival gear, build bunkers ect?
3. do you think liberal groups have started establishing armed militias and are undertaking training for armed conflict with the government?
4. do you think liberal groups are explicitly celebrating and normalizing exterminationist ideologies e.g., Naziism and the Klan?

My advice is that "y'all" should keep your eyes peeled in case you see anything like that going on.

1., 3., and 4. Yes. Not all liberal groups mind you, but I have seen some "liberal" (and frankly I think that is a fairly inaccurate description of the left anymore....) groups espouse all of those 3.

Congressional staffers doxxing Senators, the shit above along with going after ICE in Portland, Representative Scalise being shot, harassing people like Cruz at dinner, Spartacus and Maxine telling people to go after representatives and get in their face, and Hillary saying to stop being civil because you just cannot be civil with Republicans...nah man, you got fringe people you are trying to bring up and this is the leadership of the Democratic Party saying that the protesting and upheaval during Kavanaugh was not enough, we need more.

Rockfish asks, "Why you mad at us?" Because, many...many of your brethren have lost their farking minds and when it gets brought up your response is to blow a raspberry and mumble about Trump and deplorables.

I'm not asking why you're mad at people like me. I'm focused on the major malfunction that causes you to elect a corrupt unfit imbecile because people you don't even know have hurt your feelings.

I feel Trump supporters' sneering contempt all the time. It's hard to miss. But that feeling wouldn't imaginably trigger me to look for some Democratic equivalent to Trump. (I don't even know who such a Democrat might be.) And of course no one's worried that your sneering contempt will emotionally trigger people like me. We're all supposed to be walking on eggshells so we don't trigger people like you, though.

You feel Trump supporters sneers huh? Were you asleep the last 8 years and the unprecedented attacks on people from the bully pulpit by the sitting President? You didn’t build that? Basket of Deplorables? He systematically attacked entire industries such as banking and made all people associated the enemy of the people. You do realize that right?

I find it interesting that you think you must walk on eggshells. All that you are experiencing is what Republicans have lived with for decades. You are not accustom to the right pushing back. We are publically pushing back and disagreeing when we do.

I say you created this and then wonder why you are now having to deal with it. I’m glad. I hope you are equally uncomfortable

This seems like a pitiful post to me. Do your really mean this?

I'm focused on the major malfunction that causes you to elect a corrupt unfit imbecile because people you don't even know have hurt your feelings.

And this?

I feel Trump supporters' sneering contempt all the time.

It's no wonder that you often complain about trolls and trolling on this board. You seem highly susceptible to trolling and believe others are also.

I can't imagine a life filled with "feeling" the "sneering contempt" of others "all the time". Moreover, I can't imagine those feelings controlling my behavior let alone influencing my vote. I think the Dems offer "feelings of angry Trump voters"* as a substitute for the reality that Hillary and the Democrats had no broad voter appeal such that an "unfit imbecile" could win.

I think you need to read and understand this.

* when they don't blame Russian collusion; Comey, false pizza joint stories, sexism, Jill Stein, voter suppression, or the Electoral College.

I don't know why she can't get the message that she needs to just go away.

Exactly. She needs to go away. Far, far away.

Even if some of what she says has validity, no one will listen.

I don’t know why folks on the right thing she’s the dem’s standard bearer. Or that she’s even relevant now. (She’s not).

They just can’t let her go. She’s the boogey person that always gets them fired up.

I’d like to see a study that shows mentions of the Clintons on various media outlets. I’d bet that fox and further right outlets run away with the total number of references.

It’s simple. You guys elected the most unfit candidate to ever occupy the White House. And even after it continues to be painfully clear that he’s way in over his head (among other things), you continue to find ways to justify support for him. Because some of the policies you like are enacted- the hell with everything else.

The Trump supporting right (making a distinction from “old school republicans”) is united in a few things. The thing that Rock is referencing is the phenomenon of “owning the libs”. I’ve seen it a LOT on the right, and it drives the behavior many of the Trump supporters. Never mind that they know deep down that what they are doing is out of bounds- all that matters is that a “lib” is pissed off by their actions (see Stephen Miller as a classic example of this).

On a basic level, it’s a combination of white privileged folks feeling threatened, and emotional immaturity.

If you can’t acknowlegde that is out there, you’re either too tribal to notice or you’re not paying attention.

Note that some on the left are like this also- but there are far many more on the right at this moment in time.

You know why....you want her to go away and rightfully so. We want her to stick around as long as possible. Until someone steps up on the Dem side and she is willing to show up 30 days from a mid-term....we will ride that winning pony every time

Only if you want it proven. Majority of Americans know what I’m saying. Nothing has changed on the right from the times I described in my response to him. When they denounce the Antifas and stop calling publically to get in peoples faces maybe things will get better. Speaking up in public when people are acting a fool like snatching MAGA hats, redirecting traffic, shouting at people while with their families, cusing you for a bumper sticker, isn’t acting out. It is in response to someone infringing on my space. We are in a time when silence can cause a loss of my freedoms I have grown accustom to having and want for my children.
