The Music Thread

This was only 3 yrs ago, and Robbie looks pretty good even though he reportedly died following a long illness. Not the best version of The Weight, but seeing people participate from the widest reaches of the planet is pretty damn cool. Definitely a fitting legacy and swan song...

I was really sad when this tour got cancelled because the oppty to see Neil and Stephen together really appealed to me. I've seen Neil solo a couple times, Stills/Manassas as well as Crosby/Nash and all four of them together. But I really enjoyed this album and would have enjoyed seeing 2 icons together playing Stills and Young songs...

Incredible song by Stills

Blows.

We actually went and saw him at the Cambridge Room at HOB Dallas after the documentary came out. Really dug his tunes.

Buddy of mine is a Namibian/S African that was in his teens/20's during the 70's, when I showed him the documentary, he was dumbfounded...it was the music of his youth.

My favorite of his...

This is a great piece on Nils Lofgren, even though it's in conjunction with his induction to the AZ Hall of Fame a few years back and a little heavy on local AZ connections. But there are some very interesting aspects of history including the way he first got hooked up with Neil, the way he came up with that piano part on the Goldrush verssion of Souther Man, and how he ended up on E Street as (to paraphrase Bruce) the "great, great Nils Lofgren".

So on the first Springfield album Neil and Steve wrote every song. Although Neil wrote 4 tracks he onlu sang lead on tow of them Burned and this early gem. This solo rendition is from the Canterbury House shows in 1968...

Neil's latest project is the release of Chrome Dreams a long lost 1977 album which includes previously un-released (and unheard) vesions of some classic staples. Here from 1976 is an awesome acoustic version of Powderfinger which brings the vocal and brilliant lyrics to the forefront...

I actually owned that album...

John made some great music, both with the Spoonful and solo as well. My favorite JS tune, and one of the best live versions I've heard...

Album and cassette.

Woodstock - tripping on LSD - filling in for a late start - setting a mood of peace - IMO the hippie movement was all downhill after this song ended:

57 years ago today Busch Stadium held its first concert. The Beatles. They played 11 songs. 23,000 showed. Opening acts were The Del-Rays, The Remains, Bobby Hebb, and The Cyrkle.

And this next dedication on WIUWC goes out to McMurty's ex, in his stronger moments ... here's the Cyrkle, and their huge hit "Red Rubber Ball!"

Couple more excellent Woody covers... From Jazzfest

Bruce has also covered This Land Is Your Land, and along with a plethora of others recorded an awesome version of Depotee. I was actually kind of shocked by how many and which artists have also covered Deportee. It's a pretty amazing list,,,

Woody wrote the song after reading newspaper accounts about the crash of a plane carrying migrant workers back to Mexico. He was shook by the fact that the accounts didt even metion victims by name, but rather just lumped them all together under the heading of Deportee. Given the current political divide over immigration it's a little suprising to see that not only Cash early on and later with The Highwaymen covered the song, but also Dolly included it on the 9 to 5 album.

Other females covered it as well. Joan Baez both as a solo staple for years and a duet with Dylan in Rolling Thunder. Joan also sang it at her 75th Birthday special in which she was backd by Jackson Browne and Emmylou.Nanci Griffith, Judy Collins and Joni have all recorded decent versions, but the song just seems mismatched to their high soprano voices. And the version by The Byrds on the Easy Rider soundtrack is very well done and a strong contender.

But after a couple of hours of listening to various versions, I think my favorite is this 2014 version with Arlo and Emmylou. I've always been a sucker for Emmylou's vocals, and on this duet with Arlo they both nail it...

Now a bit of trivia some may find interesting...

I mentioned connections to the song Deprotees from Judy C, The Byrds, Rolling Thunder and Jackson Browne...

Deportees was originally just a poem that Woody wrote in 1948. Later on a young folk singer named Martin Hoffman composed the music to match it and transform it from a brilliant poem into a song. So the fact that it was part of two soundtracks (Easy Rider and Rolling Thunder) as well as dozens of covers is directly attributable to Martin

I mentioned that Judy Collins (pre- Stills) recorded her own folk version of Deportees, and while beautiful with her lilting soprano it comes off as a little lightweight. But Judy had actually known Martin back in Colorado, and he had basically introduced her to Woody's music in the first place.

They lost touch when he moved out to Arizona to teach on a Reservation, and tragically at some point his demons got the best of him and he ended up committing suicide. In response Judy wrote Song For Martin which is (imho) achingly beautiful and the opposite of lightweight. In fact it's one of the two best songs I've ever heard dealing with the real life suicide of someone close...

The other song that I'd rank among the two best when it comes to expressing loss over a close friend's suicide is Jackson Browne's Song For Adam. Adam was a high school friend of Jackson's who ventured to India and they lost touch. It's still a mystery exactly what happened, but somehow he fell, jumped or was pushed from the high rise apt he was living in. Jackson found out about it second hand from reading about it in a letter written to another friend and composed this song.An example of why Jackson's first 5 or 6 albums, and in this case his debut album in particular have always struck me as brilliant...

Reminiscing about Judy C has got me thinking about the album Stills recorded when he was still trying to get over their break up. If I had to nominate someone for being considered the most underrated guitarist, Stills would definitely be at or near the top of my list...

Definitely a contender for the title of King of the wah pedal...From German TV...

More great guitar work, tinged with the Cuban beat of Joe Lala...

How about this for a topic? Rock stars/celebrities who have run ins with security guards that were hired by other security guards...

This video shows a Stones bodyguard attacking one of the Chili Peppers (Kiedis) who is attempting to enter the Four Seasons Hotel. Both the Stones and (presumably unbeknownst to the guard) Kiedis are staying at the hotel, although it's not clear whether Kiedis is with the band or just vacationing...

In defense of the guard, it's not as much attacking Kiedis as it is about protecting his emploers from what he assumes is an overzealous fan. Not the first time the Stones have made questionable decisions when it comes to "security" (Altamont anyone?) and unless this is a private vip entrance I'm not sure about blocking entrance to the public. But I can feel for the guard because I wouldn't know Kiedis from Adam myself...

Kind of similar situation with the Usain Bolt clip, which seems to be somewhere in the Carribean. Of course he's famous, but how many people know him by sight? And the guard clearly recognized and apologized for his mistake...

The Grammy party snub of Macca is pretty hard to comprehend. I'd say you have to live under a rock not to recognize McCartney, and it's hard to believe the Grammys would hire someone that oblivious. But obviously it's possible, just unfathomable...

Now here is Bruce recounting his own run in with Elvis's security people circa 1975. The ironic thing is (IIRC) Bruce was attempting to hand deliver to Elvis a demo version of Fire, a song he had written hoping Elvis would record. And also he wanted to meet his long time Hero...

Elvis was in Vegas and I think this may have been the run of shows where he collapsed on stage and ended up hospitalized. He likely didn't know who Bruce was and at any rate they never met. Bruce ended up allowing the Pointer Sisters to record Fire and they had a hit which reached #2 on Billboard when they released it in 1979.

And for the Bruce fans who may have never heard this story an added bonus clip. The St Louis visit...

Btw, Norton's show is awesome and would never work in the US...
