Mike Davis, Kevin Ollie, Kevin Keatts- mediocre coaches with a miracle tourney run
He was going to be fired last year if NCSt hadn’t made the tournament.
This is one of the reasons I have McCollum at the top of my wish list. 12 straight conference titles. 4 nattys. He didn’t just have a good couple weeks once or twice.
That seems to be one of the biggest check marks in all the other most mentioned candidates. None of them have consistently won games the way McCollum has.
I get the step up to P4 concern. But the “what if it does translate…” possibilities are so good, that its dwarfs the “what if it doesn’t translate” possibilities. If it doesn’t, we’ll have a good, smart basketball coach leading us for a handful of years. He’ll probably have more success than our last two coaches even if he struggles with the talent level step up. But if does…man…

Yes, but they fired him before that FF run, then had a change of heart because of the run they made. Just goes to show that it’s about the body of work, not a 4 game hot streak in the ncaa tourney. NC State played it all wrong and you had to know they’d be right back here again.
Will Wade will be in the mix. The Pack is in a tough spot, playing 3rd banana for so long, with two high profile programs right in their own neighborhood. Even if they get the top 3 or 4 kids in state, rivals UNC and certainly Duke, just go get 3-5 of the top 40 guys nationally, pretty much every year. Recruiting-wise, big disadvantage, so need a guy who can both recruit and X and O.
add Tom Crean, Chris Beard, Dusty May, and Hubert Davis.
I think that's why I'm rooting for McCollum. Highest ceiling. Plenty of middling guys might just hang on for 8 years, like Crean, but we should know pretty quick with him, and there's a chance he's transformational.
Exactly my thoughts. And, this isn’t why you hire him…but bringing Stirtz, Banks, their starting C, and their freshman 6-5 guard, establishes a decent floor. He could probably win 15+ games with those guys and Cupps on the court. Start adding Sisley and Zyrno…and then 3-4 high major level players he thinks fits the program, and would mesh well with Stirtz… and IU probably contends in the B10 year 1.
⬆️ THAT is the kind of optimism we need around here. Enough with all the doom and gloom "of course IU will f*** this up" tomfoolery. Quinn and his Bigfoot Brigade buddies aren't in charge. This time, an adult with a functioning brain is running point.
Substitute McCasland and he has a couple really good younger players too.
Beard has proven he can assemble high major competitive rosters quickly.
We’re gonna be really good, next year.
