IU basketball

Sorry snarl, but you're way wrong about BM. He's the one.

I'm with ya. After the Cig hire, I don't care where they've won, just that they've shown that they can win at a high level.
I love Cig. But that was a 1 in a million. I’m thrilled we have him. Assuming this works again with IU bball scares me a bit. We have been in the wilderness so long I want a proven commodity.

As much as it pains me to agree with mcm666, I gotta say, having watched several of Auburn's games this year, how fun would it be to land Pearl? I mean, that guy would blow the roof off Assembly Hall, and would win with an exciting brand of basketball, played by passionate, skilled players. His personality, plus our NIL and resources? Talk about a full on sprint back to relevancy.
Fuhgeddaboudit.

I used to be a hard no on him, but I wouldn’t complain if he was hired.

Dolson isn’t an idiot, which is why I like him. They’re not hiring a basketball coach with less than a year of experience from a small DI school.
So it was your opinion and not a fact that BM is not a candidate? I thought maybe you had inside information.

We're gonna screw this hire up.

They won't hire Beard because of the alleged DV incident.

They can't hire McCollum because they can't afford to take a chance like that and we'll watch him make Iowa relevant after Francis is booted.

Pearl is a no-go because he's got Auburn rolling and his kid is the coach in waiting.

We'll end up with some Mick Cronin type who will be just a step above mediocrity.

So Alford comes home?

I liked the Star's methodology and could go with these, even Cronin.

How many "fans" knew much of anything about Robert Montgomery Knight (as a basketball coach) before he showed up here... A few probably were aware of him as a player who closely followed Big Ten Basketball but I'm doubtful that many really knew much about him as a Coach...

Now I'm not trying to say McCollum is the next Bob Knight (he, unfortunately for us at this point, was clearly one in a billion) but I'm just pointing out that initial fan recognition isn't really a quality I'd consider when it came to whether or not to hire someone...

If the guy we hire wins, everyone will know his name soon enough..., and for the Right reasons...

If this hire comes down to some kind of fan popularity referendum then Scott has gone about it completely the wrong way, in my opinion...

How many of us really knew much about Curt Cignetti 18 months ago?
I'm just saying the notion of that hire "uniting the state" isn't realistic.

Any coach that wins at a high level will unite the fan base, though. Including . . . gasp . . . Beard.

I want to hear from @mattndallas , seeing as how he and his wife are close personal friends with Dolson and family.

(You don't think I was going to let that name drop you did last week go, did you?)

If they hire Ben McCollum, we’re more pathetic than I realized. I might become a soccer fan then. @mcmurtry66 you’re going to need to tell me the rules.
Hockey is way more exciting.

Son played in his division's state championship yesterday. They got smoked 6-1 but it was awesome. Rink was packed and people were going crazy. Some moms (other team had the better players and the better MILFS) on the other team screaming "flatten that kid!" to their sons. Good stuff.

My "unite the state" comment was poorly worded. What I was getting at was a coach who works the state hard, works the state's high schools, and reestablishes IU as the place where Indiana's best high school players want to come. We haven't totally lost our appeal, but it's not what it should be or what it once was.

I like how he looks in those tiny suits

Archie didn’t get it and didn’t know how to do it (work the state’s coaches). Woodson didn’t want to do it.

New guy has to get it. The top two or three guys should never leave the state. And one must be a killer 3-point artist.

IU will make the final four this year. Woodson will leave. Sit out a year. Go somewhere else and find success. And we’ll pass on Pearl beard etc and settle on the fans’ 5th choice
Yeah, schools are just beside themselves waiting to pay a guy who is 2 games over .500 in conference after 4 years to come run the 2 big stand around offense at their place.

The whole "lock down the state" thing has never worked. Knight couldn't even do it. There's plenty of talent outside the state of Indiana and they're all paid mercenaries now, anyway.

In fact, I think IU should go the way of some other schools and get a basketball and football GM to be the talent scout, negotiator, etc. to take some stuff off the coach's plate. Hell, let's have an analytics dept too!

I see no problem with this approach. Someone explain to me how having a basketball GM is bad.

Indiana already has all that. They don't call him a GM, but we've got a director of basketball operations. We also have a head for recruiting (Jordy Hulls) and a guy in charge of all the data.
