Some amazing live covers, with unique features that make them amazing...

Live and impromptu, stalling for time while they waited for George Porter to return after a show he played at another venue... You can see where WH looks off stage and gets the OK nod as he's about to finish...

Joni earlier this month at the LOC Gershwin Award ceremony where she was the recipient. She all but retired from live shows following the aneurism that nearly killed her, but this surprise rendition of Summertime is rich and eloquent...

If you watch a Linda Ronstadt video it's always a cover, she's not a songwriter. She has covered some amazing songwriters like Warren Z, Henley/Frey and the incredible Karla Bonoff, which she does here in a 1977 show in Atlanta...

I bought Karla's first two albums, which were great but for some reason she never attained the level of fame she deserved. About 20 yrs ago I was working as a reservation clerk for United in Bloomington. One day I had a call come in and when the caller gave me her Mileage Plus number and I looked it up, I was shocked to discover it was Karla.

I sort of gushed telling her how much I enjoyed her songwriting and singing, and I'm sure it freaked her out that I knew who she was. Linda has covered a number of her songs, and this is one of my favorites in her catalogue. Don Grolnick's incredible piano work does a great job of setting the mood...

I can't link their performances (I don't think) but I saw two jazz ensembles tonight at IU. They were incredible.

The second one performed five pieces, three of which were written by the performing students themselves. Really good stuff. If there are any jazz lovers out there, I highly recommend taking it in the next time you are in or around Bloomington. The only downside was the inability to sip a little bourbon while watching.

*listening.
It's primary season in Bloomington, and the munincipal elections are in full force. And by full force I mean that on today, our 2nd day of early voting, we had a sparce crowd. As a result we had time to amuse ourselves in any way that wasn't disruptive...

The little old lady Republican I shared a station with spent most of her time knitting/crocheting, and it inspired me musically. I found myself singing/humming this classic to myself and I thought someone else might appreciate hearing it...JT, not me... ;)

An extra bonus for any fellow Bruce fans... Back around 2009 or so JT was honored as the MusicCares artist of the year. I think it's Grammy weekend, and the artist who has been chosen is basically honored as a wide variety of their fellow artists perform covers of their songs.

So Bruce performed this version of Millworker and it's much more gritty and hard than the original. Reading thru the comments someone said that JT had written the "perfect Springsteen song" which would fit perfectly on Darkness or Nebraska. And I can certainly see that...

I've always loved the original, but this is certainly distinctive. And only Bruce would be able to recant a story about Two Lane Blacktop, which if you think about it in some capacity likely inspired Bruce to write Racing In The Street...

Also, someone leaked Turnpikes new single Mean Old Sun this week. It was taken down pretty fast but I got to listen to it several times.

I thought it was fantastic.

It’s supposed to be released very soon.

The two dancers in this are awesome. They are doing some great old Charleston/lindy hop/swing moves, the first two of which had pretty much died out by the time that video was made (looks to be around '63). Given their apparent age, they might have learned it in the '30s, or at least learned it directly from those who knew it best.
