The cult and its "reign of terror" brought terrible policies from local policing to inflation to cancel culture to the border. I think more and more people realize they are not what's good for the country. Biden recently promised to get progressives on teh S. Ct. I will be interested to hear his debate answers and plans going forward or whether we're going to relive the disaster of 2020 if he has congress. Pretty interesting take below in the MSN Newsweek link with the French. With respect to trump’s tainted blood offensive border rhetoric I think this author better captures what trump was inarticulate about

Re AOC rally entrance, she was supposed to be jumping around on stage to music, so I thought she'd be wearing something tight and I'd get to see some great stuff. No such luck.

Her entrance though and approach reminded me of some rappers and even athletes. I bet it's uplifting for younger generations and certainly full of energy. I'm not sure why this merits an article about it.

I think she's a smart politician about how to reach people--this type of thing, Twitter, etc. I do not think her performances in the House represent a lot of sophistication or deep thinking on issues, but then I'm not sure much of what happens in Congress does.

It was more the lyrics playing in the background. I deleted the AOC article and text as it detracts from the msn Newsweek article on progressives, the French etc

How can you associate the word “smart” and AOC in the same sentence? She should still be bartending and waitressing.

Because she got elected as a Democratic Socialist. Not easy to do, or even think about doing. Because she keeps her name out there (a lot like Trump). Because she takes advantage of, and has mastered, using social media to keep her brand relevant.

Detracts. Typo. But yes me too. It’s interesting to see it in Newsweek. I’ll be curious to hear if 2024 Biden is 2020 promising equal pay for the uswnt with no idea about the facts, just virtue signaling, and Harris calling cops murderers, or if they’ll leave the cult behind

MTG is smart enough to get elected. Many idiots are smart enough to get elected now days - President, Congress and Senate.

Seriously, though, the French Revolution is such a fascinating topic. WAY more dramatic than the American revolt. Yet, I never learned much about it when I was in school and I'm sure it's not focused on now. My kid's 7th grade class spent months on the Haitian Revolution, though, in its anti-racist zeal. Yet another perfect example of what that article was arguing about.

The Rest is History is gearing up to release a multi-part series on the French Revolution soon, and I'm sure it will be excellent. In the meantime, if anyone is interested, take a look at the Revolutions Podcast by Mike Duncan. His is a 55-part deep dive into the subject. I found his voice too monotone and tedious to recommend highly (I think he's just reading his script), but it is very informative.

I would absolutely love to read a good (doesn't have to be great) novelist write a historical fiction series that starts pre-French Revolution and advances through the end of Napolean.

That podcast sounds great. May swap it out for my sports massage reels that help me fall asleep in bed. It’s funny you mention 🇭🇹 in the context of progressives. One of my oldest and best friends is Haitian. He’s Haiti black. Super smart dude who I love to needle when he gets on about racial matters here “you’re not black” I tell him. Da fck he says. And I tell him not like a real black guy. Like grew up here. Like I grew up with. I don’t want to hear it from you. Stick to Haitian problems you don’t relate to our blacks bitch. Ours are legit.

Duncan is amazing. Revolutions is outstanding. I didn’t find him tedious at all, except maybe at the end of the Russian revolution, which was even longer than his series on the French Revolution.

Over the years our own COH has often reflected upon the French Revolution as being similar to the current left wing movement in the U.S.

Hope he responds to my remark so his position is clarified.

I guess the easiest and briefest way to explain it is that the French Revolution was based on achieving a society based on Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, which is an abstraction. There is no way to musure progress and there will always be cause for more rebellion.

The American left with its obsession with social justice, economic justice, environmental justice, racial justice and you name it justice, will always have reason for more revolt and societal turmoil . There is no way to meaningfully measure progress or success with any of that. This is similar to Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité

She was smart enough to defeat whomever the Republicans put up against her. There's that.

Not at all. The legacy of the American Revolution is a system to eliminate injustice without turmoil and violence. That system is under stress because of legal corruption, rent seeking, and a public education system that doesn’t teach it and tends to discredit the legacy.

I think statistics show that Haitian immigrants do better in all important life measures than American blacks.

I don't know that I'd give her credit for being smart enough. I think anyone who can bark MAGA talking points would win in her safely far-right red district. I'd say that she's just enough of a narcissist and megalomaniac to decide to run and put up with all the sh!t that comes with it.
 
Not at all. The legacy of the American Revolution is a system to eliminate injustice without turmoil and violence. That system is under stress because of legal corruption, rent seeking, and a public education system that doesn’t teach it and tends to discredit the legacy.

Some would argue the legacy of the American Revolution was to establish a republic with a national constitution along with establishing ideals of liberty, equality, civil rights, and responsible citizenship.

The question before us is whether we have attained those ideals. If not, where have we failed, and what should be done about it.

Was January 6th an exercise in achieving justice without turmoil? Justice in terms of trying to undue a rigged election?

There is a way to measure it. It's not that difficult. Even Kendi listed it.

The question isn't how you measure it; it's (1) whether "equality" in every outcome makes sense, and (2) across what characteristic(s) must equality occur (e.g.--black v. white, woman v. man, neurodiverse v. neurotypical, CIS v. non-binary, but what about ugly v. beautiful? short v. tall? bald v. full head of hair? etc., etc.)

As for the two revolutions and what they were "based" on, I think Jefferson was using quite a few abstractions, too:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

In a dynamic system, I don’t think you can measure ideals like equality. I think I would agree that a static snapshot might provide a basis to measure, but I need to think about that.
